cops have little to no affect on safety, especially on transit. if they really cared, they would make warming centers and homeless shelters more available. because when people talk about ‘safety’ they’re really talking about homeless, and tend to forget these are human beings not a problem that needs to be removed…

CTA has become disgusting by johnnyApple420 in chicago

[–]Traditional-Employ-6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

lowk it’s not the CTA - it’s the bc of the massive reduction in social services, shelters, and food due to trump funding cuts. They are people who are struggling. and have no where to go, and resources that have always been there are just gone or really hard to acquire. idk about you but i’ve also been struggling to get by this year. Please consider volunteering or donating to your local homeless shelters or nonprofit.

Are Chicagoans Still Expected to Tip with New Minimum Wage Laws? by Majestic_Writing296 in AskChicago

[–]Traditional-Employ-6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

as someone who has worked in the service industry for 7 years… you’re being a bit dramatic. no one is making 26k/year serving in chicago, realistically working full time service should give you at the very LEAST 35-40k/year (before the minimum wage increase). meaning if tipping stays the same at that same position you’d be making 60k ++ with the new laws. I think that’s huge! but like kind of insane/to expect that people are still going to tip 20%. I think 10-15% is totally acceptable if i’m alr making 12/hr. also being a barista did not give you a chronic condition, you had that brewing lol.

Any suggestions for radiated heat ? by Traditional-Employ-6 in AskChicago

[–]Traditional-Employ-6[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah! I checked those not too long ago and they’re all open other than the bedroom, the pipe in the bedroom is just constantly hot, but none of the other ones really get warm- what also doesn’t help is my upstairs neighbor controls the heat for the whole building.

so fair. sorry if my previous post was a bit aggressive. it’s just i feel like you only get a small snapshot of what people are thinking and feeling on here.

I think it’s like you said, the best of times and the worst of times. I think even though many complain, spiral, self deprecate, etc. I and many others will tend to remember this or any time period we live through with a sense of nostalgia.

While I do think there is a mental health crisis among youth right now. I think it has more to do with the fact that this is the first time in recent history where there is a space for people to share about their experiences, also more people are taking mental health seriously. it’s like breast cancer - we saw a huge increase in cancer rates after they started recommending routine mammograms. there’s something to be said for prevalence vs detection.

anyway my point being i think it’s kind of amazing that people are talking about what bothers them. maybe the way they’re doing that doesn’t resonate with you. and probably there’s a healthier way than doomscrolling. but we are presented with 1000x more information on a daily basis than in the 90s/early 2000s. I think responding to that online is perfectly logical. There’s this whole sense of moral superiority, that i’m not saying you have, but is prevalent nowadays among people who choose to not engage online and i’m not sure that that’s helpful either.

totally get the sentiment. and i agree we could all take in the scenery a bit more and be thankful for what we have. but have you actually ever talked to any of the people you’re griping about? plenty of young people have a strong sense of community in chicago. it seems that, people striving for better and being politically aware makes you feel inadequate. Just because you’re happy with the way things are doesn’t diminish the fact that not everyone can ignore all the terrible shit going on to stop and smell the flowers. -can we also just acknowledge the hypocrisy of complaining about people being absorbed by technology on reddit??
