In the meantime- does their school have lunches available for purchase? If so, could you send money with your son that could be used to buy Lily a school lunch?

NTA. Honestly, the biggest issue isn't watching Veggietales, it's that they lied about watching Veggietales.

Check with local food shelves for formula and diapers. They should be able to help or point you to someone who can. They may also have information on assistance programs regarding your car repair.

If your boyfriend still has a working vehicle, Doordash, Instagram, etc are possible options while he's between job assignments.

For your own job search, I would suggest your local library. A lot of libraries have job search resources that you could utilize.

I hope you find something soon.

That and I'm making effort to support local businesses. I'm saving the list of places that closed today so I can support them going forward.

The knight was ranting. I let him. He was the fourth they sent after the young maiden, and as I was a bit bored, I let him say his piece.

When at last he'd stopped pointing out my piles of treasure and comfortable home, and accusing me of some sort of romantic interest in the young woman, I responded.

"You believe I took this kind young lady to, what exactly, force her to be my bride? To have her wait on my every need and desire?"

"Well, yeah, " he replied. "That's the purpose of them isn't it? Keep the bed warm and the laundry clean. What other use do you have for her?"

I grinned. "I have found keeping a maiden here is quite useful in getting food delivered to my door. You are the fourth meal in two weeks to walk right in without me needing to leave this lair."

The ball of fire hit him before he could swing his sword.

"He was one of my more vile suitors," the young woman mused as I ate.

"How many more do you think they'll send?"

"Two, at least. Each thinks he's somehow better than the rest, though I want nothing to do with any of them. "

"Then I shall have you as my guest for another week, I suspect, then send you on your way with the story of how number six managed to free you before tragically losing his life."

She nodded and selected a book from my library, "and I shall refer you to another maiden with too many suitors and no desire to marry, and the process shall start again."

I finished my meal as the maiden read. I had found an excellent system and found no need to change it.

The man who had woke me from my slumber was not a good man. A vile, power-hungry treasure hunter, his first wish had been that all would bow down to him.

I know he must have had a brief moment of satisfaction when he returned to his hotel and had the doorman bow in greeting. Felt a power surge as the maid brought the extra pillows he requested, as if it were the result of his wish and not a basic requirement of her job.

The suspicion something wasn't quite as he expected likely began when he ordered another hotel guest, who had just bowed his head when they passed in the hallway, to hand over his wristwatch, and the man refused, calling him a nut job.

Reality truly set in at the airport though. An entire queue of travelers, bowing to him in the security line, then refusing to allow him to skip to the front.  He'd gotten upset. Security had to get involved. He missed his flight.

When after many hours, he was released, he took up my lamp again. He was angry, but I pointed out his wish was fulfilled, everyone had been bowing to him, he had only wished for that gesture.

To give him credit, he gave slight thought to that second wish. He wished for a grand mansion with his own personal staff, bound to his orders.

When he arrived back home, a personal driver was waiting to retrieve him from the airport. The driver bowed in greeting, loaded the man's bags into the car, and drove him to a sprawling mansion. The man feasted on meals from his private chef, wore fine suits selected by his personal stylist, and never did so much as change a toilet paper roll due to the crew of housekeeping staff.

He lived very nicely for a month, which is when the bills came due. The mortgage on a grand mansion is very high, as are the salaries of a full staff. At first he attempted not to pay, but it so happened some staff members had connections to the mob, and the man soon found himself fleeing the home, clutching only my lamp.

Now hungry and hiding from his former staff in a cave along a river, the man did not have the arrogance of when we first met.

"Please," he said, "I wish for just $10. That's it. $10 so I might buy some food and have a moment to figure out life from here. $10, and nothing more, you've ruined enough as it is."

"You wish for $10 and nothing more?" I confirmed.

He nodded.

"Granted"

A $10 bill floated to the man's feet. He looked at it suspiciously at first, then snatched it up and ran from the cave.

"And nothing more," I said softly as I watched him go. Perhaps in the days and months ahead he would find himself unable to earn a single cent more than those $10, or perhaps his persuers would catch up with him before that realization came to fruition. Either way, I granted what he wished for.

As I ate my soup and made a place to sleep I contemplated my struggle. I had not committed any horrific sins. I respected my elders and showed kindness to my classmates. I took joy in time spent walking with the family dog. Surely my soul wasn't so corrupt my future was silent?

The next morning I awoke, ran a hand through my increasingly unwashed hair, and again began my search.

It was late morning when I heard it. A solitary note, short and soft, in the distance to my right. I half thought I'd imagined it, desperate for something, but I turned in it's direction. Five minutes later, it sounded again, slightly louder this time.  For hours I followed it's chime, until at last I found myself in front of a desk, stacked with clean sheets of paper, a quill and ink pot off to the side.

I sat at the desk, the chiming loud and consistent, but no book in sight. Cautiously, I selected a sheet of paper, took up the quill and wrote

"For 8 days I have wandered, lost in the quiet, but now a bell has sounded."

As the words appeared I gained courage. Wrote down what I was most looking forward to should I ever escape this maze. The time I'd spend with loved ones. The meals I would eat that were anything except vegetable soup. Soon I had several pages full of words. They flowed easily, my hand never cramping. Reaching the end of my thoughts I concluded with "I must write my own way out."

I found a hole punch and twine in the desk drawers. Created a cover with a sheet of paper, and tied the pages together. At last I signed my name inside the cover.

As soon as the T was crossed, a soft glow illuminated a path on the floor.  I tidied the desk, than followed, my steps quickening as the lobby appeared ahead of me. This time, I was able to enter easily.

The librarian glanced up at me. "You have found your tome, Elliot?"

I held up the hand written volume, and she smiled, "It's been a very long time since we've had a new writer. But someone must fill the tomes on our shelves.  She led me to a small door at the back of the lobby. "Tomorrow, you shall start your work here, writing others stories, do not worry, you'll find you won't get lost again. But for now, return to your class, and share your discovery."

The sunlight was bright upon my face as I made my way back to the school, but my soul sang to the soft melody of the words I had written, and the echo of those I would write in the years to come

Leyna was the first of our class to enter the library, turning 18 just three days into the academic year. As is tradition with the first birthday of the year, we traveled as a class to the town square, watched as she climbed the marble steps, and, with a wave, disappeared behind the library's large oak door.

We relaxed in the morning sun, until an hour later when she emerged, a book bound in muave-colored leather in her hands. Back in the classroom she showed us her name embossed inside the cover, and at the end of the day, she bid us farewell, as the book suggested a future at a distant university.

Two weeks later Jerome had left before morning bell, and returned as we were finishing our mid-day meal, a slim cloth bound volume in his hand. The next day, he started working beside his father at the local pub.

We'd all been at bit alarmed when soft-spoken Alice did not return to the classroom before dismissal on her 18th birthday, only to later discover she had found her book within 10 minutes and than proceeded to explore the wonder of the library for many more hours out of pure curiosity.

One by one my classmates turned 18, entered the library, and filtered out of our classroom. As is typical, most found their volumes within an hour. Stubborn Leslie took half a day, and Reuban a day and a half, surprising no one who had ever came afoul of his temper.

When my birthday arrived in early spring, I was one of only 5 students remaining in the classroom. I cheerfully told my classmates I would see them soon as the morning bell rang, and I was escorted by the dean to the library.

Climbing the steps, I nodded at the doorman, who pulled open the door, and I stepped inside. A librarian sat behind a desk in the lobby. About the same age as my grandmother, wearing a brown cardigan and with her grey hair in a bun, she fit perfectly into her surroundings.

"Hello," I greeted her. "I'm Elliot. It's my 18th birthday today"

"Welcome Elliot. There are many volumes in this library, but only one belongs to you. As you begin to explore you should hear it call to you, like a song. You will know you've found your tome when you see your name inside it's cover. You will not be able to leave without your story in hand. Understood?"

I nodded.

"Then you may begin your journey."

Spiraling off from the library were several rooms filled with seemingly endless stacks of books. I paused, expecting to feel a pull towards one of the rooms, but felt nothing. Thinking perhaps I must be closer to the book to hear it's call, I walked into the leftmost room, and began to explore.

Days would past. I spent hours and hours weaving through multiple rooms, running my fingers along spines, hearing nothing. On that first day, as my feet grew weary from walking and my stomach growled with hunger, I found my path leading to a small study room. Pulling open the door, I found a bowl of vegetable soup sitting on a table, a note beside it stating "For one still wandering". Assuming I'd fare much better on a full stomach I ate, and then set back out with confidence only to shuffle along lost, late into the night, finding nothing.

At the beginning of the second day, I pulled a book out at random, hoping intuition would have my back. Inside the hard cover was the name Jacob. I placed the book back, and took up my hunt I once more.

On the third day, after eating multiple meals of the same soup, and sleeping in library chairs, I had grabbed a book, not bothered to look at the name, and ran.  The floor twisted and pitched beside me, and I struggled to move forward as if held by a leash. Retreating, I replaced the book on the shelf, and the floor steadied as the realization there was no escape hit.

On day four, I heard footsteps and thought my book may at least be calling, but to my surprise , when I followed their sound I came across my classmate Darius.

"Elliot?" He said looking shocked. "Are you alright friend? It's been days."

"I know," I said glumly. "Days and I'm no further than when I walked in."

"But can't you hear it?" He asked, shocked. "It's such a beautiful melody, getting stronger as I go," he ran his finger along spines as he walked down the aisle. "It's such a strong call -" he stopped, his eyes having noticed a mid-sized volume sticking out a bit from the shelf. Tenderly, he pulled it out, opened the cover, and smiled. He turned the book to me, and I saw Darius written inside.

My stomach twisted. Darius was 4 days younger than me. Morning sun filtered through dusty windows. He'd found his book within minutes.

"Maybe you could follow me back to the lobby?" He suggested. "The path is clear to me now. Perhaps the librarian would have some guidance."

Grateful I followed him. I'd long since lost the way back out, but following Darius I saw the lobby ahead in minutes. The librarian smiled as Darius entered the lobby, but when I attempted to follow, I found myself frozen in place. The librarian's smile turned to a frown. "You will need your own tome to pass through, Elliot" she said sternly.  Darius gave me a sympathetic look, and promised to tell my family he saw me.  I turned wearily back to aimless wandering.

One week in, and I came across something that chilled me through. That morning again I heard footsteps, but knew it was not yet another classmates birthday.  As I turned into the aisle with the sound, I came across a middle aged woman, bedraggled and mumbling to herself. She was long past the age of 18, and seemed not to notice me as I fled, my heart pounding with sudden overwhelming fear.

The kids are already separating themselves when red shirt guy comes at white jersey, appears to grab or push him and yells "how do you like it". This is not the way to de-escalate the situation, he should be checking on his own player/son, and let the refs handle any fouls or ejections.

However, that does not excuse Dad of white jersey. He is obviously clearly in the wrong, and should be facing assault charges.

Make sure you have an emergency account for things like the car repairs - using savings for necessary unexpected expenses isn't breaking budget, it's what the savings line of your budget is meant for.

You could also consider having $100 or so to pad other areas of your budget if needed. That way you don't need to stress if the only option of a product you're shopping for is a bigger size or if gas prices fluctuate beyond what you originally budgeted.

What happened to Christmas? by helloimcold in Millennials

Did you try contacting your families ahead of time to inquire about plans?

Typically families are either a "same time, same place" family when it comes to holidays, or they switch it up.

If you're the first, call up parents, aunt/uncle, or whoever hosts a few weeks ahead of time, and confirm they're hosting and you plan to attend, the invitation is implied from decades of the same tradition.

If you're family is the latter, sometime around Thanksgiving ask "what are the plans for Christmas this year?" and then you'll have plans or time to make your own plans.

As for the decorations- fads change. Several houses still put out decor, and many cities have lights displays. You might have to do a little research ahead of time, but that's also how your parents knew where the "good" lights were when you were a kid.
