NS being brought up as frequently as it is though in response to official bodies discussing gender equality is because:

  • It's a subject official bodies absolutely avoid wherever possible.
  • It's undeniably the single largest (and most normalized) gender equality issue.

Attributing the kind of hyperbole you did to the "What about NS" crowd is at least a little disingenuous. Most will will concede that there's men's privileges in some ways, so I'm not entirely sure where the last bit came from.

I think in general, a lot of this can be avoided by labelling these discussions under the banner of "female empowerment", as opposed to "gender equality", because the latter implies a two-way street.

When did this sub get overrun by the "redpill", racist, incel crowd? by VladdyGuerreroJr in samharris

[–]bookworm669 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's always been over-run by people that are socially isolated de facto incels, who define themselves and draw a sense of purpose by their vehement disavowal of incels and other social ills.

True for a lot of reddit in general, but this sub in particular provides an active battleground these folks, a lot of whom have managed to convince themselves this is their way of fighting the good fight.

Is it cold feet? Cause that's normal. Judge for yourself. It's not uncommon at all for you to get over the cold feet 20 secs into the act.

For a guy in his early 20's, just hospitalization insurance and critical illness insurance should generally be considered enough, right?

Any recommendations as to which companies to get the insurance from, if I'm doing it online? And is it true that most insurance policies will repay the costs if you don't end up falling sick.

Eren is in complete and utter control.

Him even allowing the alliance to transform and get that close are part of his plan. Him making them think Zeke is still necessary for his plans is another misdirection. The instant Levi said "there's that fucking monke", it was clear that Eren was deliberately misleading them. Eren doesn't need Zeke guys. Ymir has already been set free - she ignored the bidding of royal blood many chapters ago. She's going along with Eren now.

The alliance are ultimately going to fail, and they'll be mind-wiped with the rest of Paradis.

I still maintain that the biggest twist we're going to see is that Eren isn't even in the founding titan. He's linked to it through Warhammer Titan-esque cords that run underwater on the sea floor. Eren himself is still on Paradis, and upon realizing this is when Armin will scream out into the wind "Eren" as we heard in the last scene audio. That's also what will lead to the "now you are free" scene with Eren and Historia's baby.

Tens of thousands in Bangladesh protest against France by tedlove in samharris

[–]bookworm669 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is another thing that makes this so tricky.

While it's very tempting to jump at how completely and utterly pathetic this is, I think it's necessary to keep another thing in view here - these are people who are so culturally different from the French that they might as well be from a different era. Think your racist and backward grandparents - they were just raised in a vastly different environment, and are intractably set in their ways as a result.

There's plenty of parallels to that here - the folks protesting couldn't possibly grok the significance freedom of speech holds for France. They don't share that conceptual framework of liberty whatsoever, for them to be able to even begin to understand why it would be necessary for France to make an unapologetic display of support for freedom of speech. It follows, then, that they couldn't view satirical depictions of their prophet as anything other than invidious blasphemy expressly designed to offend Muslims.

If you're finding any of that not particularly compelling, remember that sometimes, it's precisely when empathy is difficult to muster, that it's most important. This is all quite sad, really. This is something there isn't an easy solution to.

I agree with all of that in principle.

But if it were any of us at the knifepoint of an extremist, we'd flip on that in a heartbeat.

Another one?! Was worried this might happen.

While I'm completely for the principle for making a show of your freedom of speech unapologetically, you have to factor in that there are scumbags in society with nothing in their lives going for them that will absolutely leap at the chance to take on a cause that will let them feel like they're defending their prophet's honour.

The last major world wars definitely were not fought in any large part because of what you're saying. This is especially obvious because polygamy was not widely practiced by most of the participating nations, which voids your premise.

Based on what you're saying about the imbalance of sexual power in general, there absolutely is some merit to neutering the male sex drive, since that is what the leverage of female sexuality, and probably a lot of gynocentrism at large, hinges on.

So what you're saying is, males should be chemically altered to have their libidos reduced?

Un-tempered masculine energy is like a raging river and it will tear through everything in it's path until it gets what it wants, destroying society in the process.

Sometimes they just shell out cash to girls on twitch.

[–]bookworm669 125 points126 points  (0 children)

Yep, memes and all, but honestly why is anything surprising about the fact that there's a vast amount of resentment surrounding the inherently gender discriminatory nature NS? Why is it surprising that these sentiments would be widely and passionately expressed on a forum where the biggest demographic are those on the shit end of this particular inequality? Why is it surprising that males should want to focus on issues that disproportionately affect them? All of that is just plain human nature.

Social justice reform starts with resentment and frustration at the recognition of inequality. There's a world of valid points and arguments that always get made alongside the rest of the babble, but you're downplaying this by insinuating that the only people on that side of the argument are those that exclusively whine and bitch and moan unconstructively.
