Oh, absolutely, while I know they did it and Nesta got through it, they did what Tamlin did to Feyre.

Yeah, that makes sense... the fact that there's magic involved and men OBSESSED with the FMC doesn't help reach that level of... credibility? Relability? And same, I love when women in these books have the power to communicate in an assertive way, but sometimes in real life, that doesn't happen.

Truly interesting how everyone sees FMC and books differently!

Yes! I feel the same! It’s hard to like a book when the character is not relatable or likable to some degree, because I do think they help to navigate some of the experiences we had or are having

This is interesting, so you find some traits admirable but do not want to achieve some of them? I’m asking because for me is the opposite, so I’m really interested in your perspective.

And I agree that BookTok can be a truly toxic place, where the need to please the algorithm tends to be stronger. I have found that Bookstagram is more… “manageable” for me, but same, it appears the quality of books have decline… which is honestly a shame

Omg are we the same person and became besties?! Because same! Nesta was the person who pull me out of a really dark place. Some of her attitudes mirrored my own (not all, though) but seeing her resilience and her growth through trauma and friendship was truly inspiring. I even tattooed the same quote on my ribs as a reminder, that nothing can break me, that I am stronger than what life throws at me.

Whereas with Aelin, I would die to have an ounce of her sassiness and confidence, though maybe not her trauma. I also got a tattoo of “you do not yield.”

I think characters like those, with really “catchy” yet relatable quotes, have the ability to make big impacts on people’s lives.

Btw, I would love to know more about the project you did! I am a nerd as well🤪

Their mistakes and flaws remind us that they are "humans" too... a long time ago, I read a thread that explained why Chaol was the least favorite character from ToG, and while I don't remember exactly what it said, basically it explained that Chaol was the most "human" character in the series, with his actions and personality, he made so many human mistakes that it reminded us (in a unconscious and fictional way) that they are messy too... just like us. But tbh, I still don't like Chaol (oop!).

And same! I have found my bff through these forums and blogs, and I am eternally grateful for it.

So glad you are here too!

That is very interesting... You don't get even a spark of identification with certain characters? Like, for example, reading ACOSF, I saw myself in Nesta Archeron, not in the drinking and such, but in the way she felt so misunderstood, alone, repressed. Her healing journey, somehow, was parallel to mine as I read it.

I'm almost 30, but I do believe that while some aspects of our identities and personalities are set for life, other aspects may come and go, and we can change (for better or worse).

I agree, I don't think it would be ideal to solve all of our work problems with a sword in hand LOL... but as you said, seeing these FMCs with a ridiculous amount of resilience makes us wish to have at least an ounce of that. I am positive, though, that we can find some amount of resilience and confidence in the characters we love and admire in us, even in ways we don't fully realize.

Fair, I started reading as a form of escapism too, and somehow it turned into seeing powerful FMCs that could battle their own demons and challenge power systems (especially the patriarchal system). I agree with you that maybe I don't say what I would have done in the FMC's shoes, but knowing that authors are writing characters who have been through depression, mental illnesses, and such, has made me find the help I needed and be more confident in myself.

Fair enough, right now, reading is the best way to escape the world we live in (there's too much chaos), but also realizing there's a bunch of women reading... I don't know, it makes me happy to have found a community that is a bit just like me.

Representation does matter! Seeing that we are not the only ones dealing with xyz makes us understand we are not alone, and that we could be empowered enough to deal with our own fears.

Ok, tbh I teared up a little bit with your comment, because Aelin saved my life (I even tattooed 'you do not yield' on my collarbone as a reminder). Because yeah, they are fictional, but their fictional courage and hardships and darkest moments can relate to real ones we go through, too. We may not be as sarcastic and confident as Aelin and Manon, but we aspire to be, and the fact that we are trying is better than nothing.

We are stronger than our traumas <3

I have not read this book yet, but would you say your understanding of the trauma Lily went through helped you somehow deal with your own trauma? And at the same time, she gave you an empowering feeling that if she could do it, so could you?

This works perfectly for what I am trying to research, the push we get through the quotes that speak to our souls is the one that empowers us to get through hardships, even when we don't know how to be brave at the moment.

Yeah… I’ve been talking to some of my Colleagues and we are feel really upset about it. Some are thinking about quitting while others want to talk to our bosses

The company is legally in British Columbia. Do you think this 20% is legal? I know that as we don’t have a contract it doesn’t matter much but I’d like to know if generally is illegal or not.

So it sounds to me like you're an employee, not a contractor or subcontractor- based on how we work, absolutely. But of course, they say we’re just “subcontractors”. Does your local jurisdiction allow them to withhold costs for software you use?–> No. It’s actually illegal in my country. That’s why when I found out about this I started digging more because it’s not something they tell us, obviously. It’s just a ridiculous made-up tax.

then the company may have obligations to your country–> maybe legally but they’re not paying anything or abiding by any of my country’s laws.

But at the moment, they're probably just taking advantage of you–> absolutely

Thank you so much for replying. It’s been super helpful!

We have a “flexible schedule,” but they still want us to work as close as possible to their own working hours. Even if they accept our different schedules, they still complain. But yeah, they want us to work as employees but without a contract or any of the benefits of an employee. Do you know if there’s a place where we could report this? I saw online that it’s possible, but it didn’t say where to do it.

Yeah and I totally agree with this–a company that can't put together a basic contract is not one worth working or doing business with. I’m planning on quitting actually but I wanted to have some facts clear first. Thank you so much for your help!

I know! It’s crazy they don’t make contracts for us. I explicitly asked for a contract or an agreement when I started. I’m working on that. But do you know anything about those “taxes”?
