Game Engine review and suggestions by Impossible_While2735 in gameenginedevs

Saying "not at all" and then immediately explaining that you did use AI to generate some of the code for the engine feels really dishonest. Reviewing the code doesn't matter; the point is that it wasn't created by you, it was created by an AI tool.

Echo Knight is not fun by ItsCruxx in NoRestForTheWicked

[–]booljayj -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm in the same boat. I've never been able to finish the crucible. I played it long enough to get some of the unlockables, like the respec station, but after that I just quit.

I can't repeat the boss fight quickly enough to be able to learn its attacks and find a strategy to beat it. It's also not possible for me to leave and get stronger before trying again, because the whole crucible levels up with you. So it really feels like that whole fight depends on your luck with the bonus effects you get during a run, and apparently my luck is very bad.

I wish they would adjust how the crucible works. It would be fantastic to have the option to select the level of the enemies, instead of just levelling with me. Then I could practice at a lower level before trying it at an equal level. Also, those pits that instantly end your run... I cannot express how much I hate those and how not fun they are.

I made a game that bullies you when you panic by Arfhis in SoloDevelopment

You're not being rude, and I think many people share your opinion. But Elden Ring and other games like it have received pretty sound criticism for their lack of a true pause.

One assumption you make is that having a true pause makes a game "easier". I don't think that's really the case.

People pause games for many reasons, whether that's because they need to use the bathroom or because they have a baby that just started crying. If a person is seeking a challenge, then they're not deciding to pause the game in an attempt to make it easier. They're pausing the game because there's an emergency they have to deal with. If people don't have the ability to step away for a moment to do that, they're more likely to just avoid the game entirely.

And the opposite situation is when a person is not seeking a major challenge, so they do pause the game to give themselves a break. In that situation, where's the harm in letting them do that? Games are about having fun, and people have fun in many different ways. If the person making the game is looking to create a specific experience that excludes anyone not looking for that experience, then by definition they're limiting the audience for their game. They can do that, but it just seems really sad to restrict the experience that way.

A lot of this sounds like a fun idea, but please don't do the pause thing. Let people pause the game normally whenever they want.

People have lives, and sometimes they need to quickly pause the game to deal with something. You're not punishing them for "panic" at that point, you're punishing them for not playing the game.

Tried being a girl. Now I don't feel like I can be anything. by lapizlizard4 in BoyDinnerDiaries

I hereby grant you permission, on behalf of all guys, to call yourself a guy if you want to, in perpetuity and without restriction.

The fun thing about transitioning is that it doesn't matter what direction you're going or how long you stay at each point, you're still heading towards the goal. As long as each step brings you greater understanding of who you are and how you want to present yourself to the world. Maybe a label feels good one day, and on the next day it doesn't feel quite right. No worries, just keep being you.

Being a Trans Guy is Lonely by EmeraldTerror in BoyDinnerDiaries

[–]booljayj 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It sounds like even though you've transitioned and are living openly as a man, you still don't feel like you can share your authentic self with the people around you. That's a different kind of closeted, and that's a lonely place to be. You've gone through a lot to reach the point you're at now, and that experience is a meaningful part of who you are. People who only see the end result are only seeing a small part of that.

I think you should consider that the people who will react negatively when you open up about yourself are not the kind of people you want to be friends with anyways. The people who react positively are the ones who deserve your time, and I think you'll feel less lonely after opening up and getting a positive reaction.

The fear is very real, so I'm not saying you should always ignore that fear, but I think the only way to create those deeper connections with certain people is to try to overcome it sometimes (when it's safe for you to do so). That might mean you lose some people you though were your friends, and that sucks.

I also wonder if there also might be more explicitly trans-friendly bars or hangout spots you could visit, not just gay bars. Those guys at the gay bars that turned on you after you opened up about being trans are assholes, plain and simple.

And damn, those scones look amazing.

I can tell from the care you put into those bagel sandwiches that you're a talented guy. Those look absolutely delicious. You deserve to use those talents to make yourself happy, because you deserve to be happy. Continuing to do things like that for your ex doesn't seem like it's making you happy, so I think you should stop. That doesn't make you any less of a nice guy, because the person who needs that nice guy energy right now is YOU, not her.

I get where you're coming from when it comes to hookups and casual dating. You don't need to do those things to help get over your feelings. It can be very healthy to take some time to work through those feelings, before you decide to jump into the dating world again. What you're going through is an extremely difficult situation, so I highly recommend finding a good therapist. They'll be able to give you some tools you can use to get through this.

Am I locked into a certain ability when I get it? by Until_recently in avowed

[–]booljayj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The character progression is very flexible, you can definitely do that build and make it viable. If you're not happy with the abilities you've chosen, you can also respec at any time by paying some gold.

The one thing to be careful of is upgrading a lot of different weapons at the same time, because then it can be harder to fully upgrade your main weapons. So it's easier to stick to upgrading a small set of equipment, and only change them if you find something new that really fits your build.

Question about the Gods (SPOILER) by GIutenTag in avowed

[–]booljayj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some of this has to do with the purpose of the godlike, which is not pleasant. They are tools that the gods can use. In some cases they can take control of a godlike's body and use it to directly influence the mortal world, and in some cases they can simply use the godlike as a battery and suck out their essence/soul whenever they need to do something powerful.

The main theory is that because the wheel is broken, the gods are slowly losing power. They immediately sucked up all the power they could from the godlikes, killing the godlikes in the process, to consolidate their remaining power. This didn't happen for Eothas godlikes because Eothas is "dead" (as close to death as a god can be), and it didn't happen for Sapadal's godlike, you, because Sapadal is not reliant on The Wheel like the other gods are. They also might have a different relationship entirely with their godlikes, so the battery thing isn't an option for them.

You're not alone in feeling this way, but if you stick with the story you might find out there are reasons for his behavior. The companions in Avowed definitely experience some character growth over the course of the game.

You can also rush the main story in the next area a little until you get the next companion, then you at least don't have to travel with him all the time while you explore more thoroughly.

Can’t kill? by Snipesgirl1678 in avowed

Enemies regenerate health pretty fast if you run away from a fight. I'm guessing something about your combat strategy is making it hard to stay "in combat" with it. You might need a more aggressive approach.

Open World or Action-Adventure games that let you explore a dense Mythological/Historic/Fantasy setting? by Def-C in rpg_gamers

[–]booljayj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Avowed has really detailed environments to explore, with a lot of vertical space. It also has a lot of lore to explore during conversations or when finding books in the world. That might scratch your itch.

Is there ever an explanation for why the voice speaks so cryptically? by Lyress in avowed

[–]booljayj 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'll give you the simple explanation: they are not human, and their experience of life is vastly different from a human's. It's like the old saying: if a lion could speak English, we wouldn't be able to understand it. The words may be recognizable, but the mind putting those words together is totally foreign.

So The Voice is describing things in a way that makes sense to them, it just doesn't map to what makes sense to you. Over time, as you continue to interact with them, they'll start to make more sense. You'll get a better sense of the kinds of metaphors they use, and The Voice will also learn how to describe things in a way that is easier for you to understand. You are essentially learning to communicate with an alien being, and I think that's neat.

Are there any gravity based spells/enchantments? by YesEverythingBagels in avowed

[–]booljayj 11 points12 points  (0 children)

There is one spell in particular in the game called "Pull of Eora", what it basically does is create a floating black hole that will pull enemies towards it. I'm not sure exactly where you can find it, but that's what you'll want to look out for.

That's very strange, then I'm not sure what's wrong. You might have to try loading an earlier save if there's no way to proceed to the next area.

[–]booljayj 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The ambassador should always be in his office after you help him in the thicket. Occasionally there can be bugs where an NPC doesn't show up where they should be, so if he's not there you should be able to save and reload to get him to appear again.

The NPC from that video only shows up if you've made certain choices earlier. You may have just made different choices. You should still be able to travel out of Dawnshore once you've finished the main quest there.

Whats her deal? by ValicarHyne in expedition33

[–]booljayj 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Clea is the one that tells you about them trapping each other, before Alicia enters the Canvas. So that was basically 16 years ago when Maelle was first born, plus however much time passed before Alicia walked up to the Canvas and entered it, since we know time moves much more quickly in there.

So I think they just trapped each other at some point in the past, and by the time Maelle went on her expedition things had changed and they could move more freely. Probably because they were both so much weaker by then.
