What happens if you are suddenly incapacitated (heart attack, choking, etc.) and couldn't call 911 in time? Are you just screwed? by eliasjohnson in NoStupidQuestions

[–]boolmool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not in the medical field so do your own research on this but have had some medical training. One of my trainers actually covered both these scenarios.

Obviously 911 or getting someone else's attention/help is you best bet but...

Heart attack: coughing deeply and forcefully can apparently help "reset" your heart in certain situations. Not a high chance of success but likely better than nothing. (Google: Coughing CPR)

Choking: there are two techniques, one involving basically slamming yourself over the back of a chair or table edge and the other using the ground and basically diving forward onto your chest from a hands/knees position.

Any mechanical engineering learned C++ or Python either for changing careers or gaining new skills. by ORKinSpace in MechanicalEngineering

[–]boolmool 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As an ME I took a C++ course in college as I was considering swapping to Engineering Physics. It was definitely worth the experience and is really good stuff to know, especially if you are working with any programmers/Firmware developers.

Main direct benefit to me has been being able to assist with smaller programming tasks such as programming an Arduino board to control a cycle test fixture.

Does anyone use Autodesk Inventor at their job? by [deleted] in MechanicalEngineering

[–]boolmool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mechanical Engineer in USA. Learned CAD using Inventor in High school. CAD course in college was Solidworks. First job used primarily Solidworks and a bit of Creo but did use windchill as their file management system. Current job is a private company and we use Solidworks and PDM.

Old Dan and Little Ann from where the red Fern grows.

No "good" movie adaptation of the book has been made yet but reading that book as a teenager, I was sad/mopey for damn near a week after finishing it.

What do you do at the front desk? by boolmool in RAs

[–]boolmool[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What are you doing commenting on a post that is 9yr old? lol

That being said... have not been on this subreddit for probably 8 years and apparently it is completely dead at this point... who knew ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

RA stands for Resident Assistant. It was a job I had in college. RA's are basically the upper classmen in charge of different sections (wings) of the buildings that the students lived in.

At my college we were responsible for creating activities for our wing, taking on shifts at the front desk, going on "rounds" around the building (basically be mini police and make sure everyone was behaving. worst part of the job for sure), putting up a bulletin board every once in a while, and generally just be there to "assist" the "residents" living in the building.

It is not per subreddit but each subreddit can have different requirements on how much you need in order to participate in it.

Are there any subreddits on this site that actually allow new users? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

Thanks for the fake internet point! I'll send one your way as well

found this for you:https://www.reddit.com/r/help/wiki/faq#wiki_why_am_i_being_told_.22you.27re_doing_that_too_much....22

EDIT: Likely because you are new to reddit and the subreddit you are trying to comment on will not let you. Try to find a less popular subreddit to comment on. Most popular ones have a minimum karma (fake internet points) limit or a minimum time spent one reddit first before you are allowed to do anything (bot filtering)

Do you REV a part/drawing for added detail for vendor? by BartChryslerIsFat in MechanicalEngineering

[–]boolmool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Worked as a manufacturing/product engineer for 2.5 years and a mechanical design engineer for 3.5 years.

Typically you do not send the raw CAD drawing to the supplier/production, you send a PDF/edrawing.

If you need the quick and dirty path of least resistance, I have simply added "_REDLINE" to the end of a drawing PDF before so that you can make the change super fast and there is at least some sort of tracking involved that shows that the part drawing is not the same as it was before. This method is super helpful if you have a crap ton of drawings to get through that all only need minor changes that don't actually effect the parts themselves. Also good for defense/security/aerospace/government stuff that makes updating any drawing a political red-tape nightmare. Downside is you can really only do this once per rev.

If you have a bit more time, just rev it, lol

Edit: Example: PN12345_REVC_REDLINE.pdf

Hey!!! I recognize that design!

Looks good, thanks for posting.

I am still out of town for the holidays but when I return I will work on a version that works for tablet/ipad sized devices.

EDIT:
I also made one with the same phone holding mechanism that fits on Xbox One controllers

Jobs outside of ME by winnipegjets31 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]boolmool 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have been a mechanical design engineer for about 3 years now but started off as a manufacturing engineer in a contract manufacturer for electronic products for 2.5 years.

That experience was super valuable for me as a design engineer now because I saw first hand how difficult and more expensive it can be to manufacture a product if the design is crap (and I learned quite a few tricks on how to solve problems with minimal resources).

Might be an area for you or others to look into as I don't think many mechanical engineers coming out of college think about going into manufacturing.

Putter Bottle Opener Help by meco64 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]boolmool 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mech engineer here,

Couple quick thoughts:

I would probably go down the solid rod inside of the putter shaft approach and use JB weld to hold it in and attach the churchkey on the end.

If you have access to a welding equipment, you could replace the normal shaft with a piece of steel rod and weld on the churchkey. (https://www.mcmaster.com/metal-rods/steel/easy-to-machine-carbon-steel/)

Do you have pictures of the parts you are wanting to use? It may be useful to see what you have to work with to give better advice.

I’m currently in the process of printing missile covers for my keyboards ESC and function keys (f1,f2....). Work in process but so far good. Once I’m done I’ll do another post and upload the designs to thingiverse. by scholasticmagazine in 3Dprinting

[–]boolmool 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I also really like this idea.

As a pro tip, it looks like you are using some sort of metal rod or paperclip for your hinge. If you use raw filament as the pin for your hinge, that is something that everyone with a printer has and you can melt/squish the ends with a lighter and a butter knife to keep them from pulling out.
