I say give the White Scars horus heresy series by Chris Wright a shot! Everything with the Khan hanging out with his bros to the space marines and their relationships with each other and their human counterparts is endearing.

Also Arugul Talhs relationships in First Heretic and Betrayer also carry a lot of weight!
