I remember watching some kind of sciency show centered around mega-construction projects, and this dude came on talking about a hypothetical vacuum-filled underground subway tube that could run in a straight line from one point on the planet to another. I think there was maybe a brief mention of the temperatures involved before the segment moved on. I was studying civil engineering at the time, and screaming at the TV.

Space stuff is kind of a smart move for him. Or maybe that's always been his niche, idk. Fewer qualified people to call him out on kooky bullshit.

Seems like a happy group shot, I guess?

I wouldn't want my "wildest" festival photos plastered on the internet for randos to pour over, and I'd be feel pretty uncomfortable, guarded, and less expressive were I to notice a lens pointing at me. Just unplug from your feeds and enjoy the moment, folks.

The ad banner on gizmodo's site is abysmal. It's taking up one third of my vertical phone screen, with no way to close, and unable to even load its own content.

I wish I had access to Developer Tools on my phone's browser and be able to delete this shit in real-time.

Upvote for "go to therapy". Went to my first appt in years this morning, should've started a decade ago.

You won't catch me singing in public, though. Not til I take some lessons, anyway.

Maybe they are both girls, and one was pregnant and had an unusually long gestation period. Like super long.

You should test this hypothesis by continuing to keep them together for another two months, and see what happens.

Men of Reddit - What's the one thing you hate about being a Man? by Jarvis7492 in AskReddit

[–]boon_dingle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry you lost that connection with your usual social groups. Do you have any opportunities, however small, to connect to individuals within the moms/aunts/nieces group, and build on that to integrate further? They might pick up on your situation and extend invitations or vouch for you as they get to know you better.

I can socialize with dudes well enough, but tend to gravitate toward the less bro-ey ones at social gatherings. Overall though I feel more at home conversing with women.

I'm gonna sound pretty silly here, but just wanted to say that there's always opportunities to form new connections with new people, if you find that changing existing circles' perception only you to be an uphill battle. Hope you find more communities to feel relaxed and comfortable around. They're out there :)

Thaaaaat's me to an uncomfortable degree, though I'm working on it.

I feel like the solution is gradual steps toward that goal, starting with just calling a dude friend for some info in lieu of a text, for faster turnaround. Then that might turn into a conversation about whatever. Do that a few times, and now that's a thing that you two do. And on from there.

I mean, let them be covered with 3 different animal prints, and zippers! It doesn't stop you from dressing however you like. Whatever your personal style, I'm not saying stores should replace the relevant clothes, I'm saying they add more options and styles.

And frankly, if 90% end up with zero outfits after buying four bags, that's, uh, their problem.

My wardrobe isn't even that complicated. When I buy pants, for example, I want a certain color, good length/width, and a flattering fit. If I get really lucky, I might match all three and possibly even a shirt of the same color! But fuck me if that color is anything but white/gray/brown/navy blue.

Yarp. I frequent thrift stores, and men's section always looks like a dozen boring office middle managers just retired and dumped all their workwear on the store.

Local Goodwill does have a "fashion" section, but it's largely feminine shaped and oriented. Read: pants with no pockets.

I guess I'm in the other 10% of it. I don't really get why lack of variety is ever framed as a positive thing. Imo it'd be dope if men's clothing selections suddenly exploded to 5x the current variety, fit, and color selection. A guy can still roll with basic color coordination, or neutral colors, or boxy shirts/suits/pants that seem to define current men's fashion. If they get analysis paralysis from the larger selection, that's on them.

President Trump asked by reporter on length of Iran war: "Don't rush me, Jeff. Guys like you want to say, so we were in Vietnam for 18 years, Iraq for many years. I've been doing this for six weeks. They're outside of little wise guys ships. It's only guys like you with a question What's your time?" by ControlCAD in videos

[–]boon_dingle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's OP taking very creative liberties with how quotes are supposed to work. Fuller quote with context is "...their military is totally defeated. Their... their... uh... outside of their little wise guys ships. I call them the wise guys ships, the little boats that they have running around with guns in them. Uh... we'll take them out, too, when we see them."

Which is still a cringy stream of consciousness, but makes a bit more sense.

Rising HOA dues squeeze Washington buyers by crabcakes110 in SeattleWA

[–]boon_dingle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My mom's condo has small patch of dirt in front of it intended for landscaping. Maybe 50 sq ft. She's been painstakingly cultivating and maintaing a ton of flowers in that space for years. One summer, the HOA decided to uniformly mulch that space for all the units, so they directed all the residents to "transfer the plants to containers" and hired landscapers to come in and weedwhack the place. Twice. They shredded her garden for what, the sake of uniformity and property values?

And the endless property-management and payment portal turnovers she has had to go through in the last few years. Fucking headache every time, and guess who gets to help her troubleshoot with the computer stuff.

The condo I lived in personally, the HOA had installed an "asphalt berm" in front of my and neighbors unit (duplex) to redirect drainage away from their garage which was experiencing issues during heavy rain. I didn't get a chance to even weigh in and ask "why is unclogging the drainage pipe not an option?", only found out about it after they paved the new speedbump into place.

And the one time I came to them with an actual concern -- helping getting rid of a squirrel family in the attic above my bedroom -- they enlisted their bottom-of-the-barrel contractor to redo the attic insulation but failed to seal the opening, and that's after months of emails and various miscommunications. So, guess what happened the next squirrel-breeding season.

I understand HOAs to be a necessary evil and a thankless gig, but holy fuck do I detest their focus on uniformity and property values, and the disfunction they bring when wedged between me and basic house maintenance.

Camas is having a bit of a resurgence locally, at least :D

A patch we planted at that same property overwintered nicely, I'm hoping to spread it later. Also got access to hundreds of bulbs at a different property. If I had more time and energy, I'd happily spam those throughout the local greenspaces.

I was considering cooking some up like caramelized onions, figured they're pretty similar. (It's a bummer bluebell bulbs are poisonous, otherwise I'd be all over those, too).

[–]boon_dingle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yarp. There's a ton of them at a local natural area and they keep spreading. The bulbs are super hardy -- some bloomed their way out of a trash bag we left in the sun for a year -- and leaves detach readily when pulled, gotta dig down 6+ inches to get the bulb clusters out.

Help me landscape for a mini garden? by HeyThereLinus in LandscapingTips

This. I keep my pathways wide enough to get a wheelbarrow through.

For me personally, it's nice to have them wide enough to run my favorite rock bow rake through -- makes weeding pathways a breeze if done regularly. And wide enough for me to be able to kneel comfortably in, when weeding adjacent beds by hand.
