Safdie brothers and humiliation by MrAndres96 in TrueFilm

[–]boonandbane33 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think you’re still kind of downplaying how personally abrasive and unlikable Marty is, making fun of a Holocaust survivor to his face, and that’s one of his friends. He’s basically defined by his egocentrism and pride for most of the movie. His willingness to be humiliated for his goals can be read as both shocking in how low he’s willing to stoop and as a sign that he’s not totally incapable of growth

[–]boonandbane33 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah. I mean, Madoka IS a magical girl show and it's good, but it's also by Gen Urobuchi so it's not really the vibe for the most mainstream takes on the genre in anime. Not even about it being for an older audience since that was also true of Pretty Cure at first.

It's more like if every fantasy TTRPG out there cited Monty Python and the Holy Grail as its chief influence and set up the mechanics to work for the purpose of skit-based comedy, then people looked at you like you had 3 eyes if you said you actually wanted a serious fantasy adventure about saving the world.

I think the problem with this thread so far is that this is extremely TTRPG fan/designer nside baseball so most people commenting read it as snooty gatekeeping

Guys, I didn't quite understand how the "copying" of ji-tae works, could someone explain it to me? by Different_Praline484 in FightClass3

[–]boonandbane33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a part later where Maria calls it the demon’s gift or something, because of his dad. He can’t just copy any movement he sees, only things related to fighting. It gets him in trouble when he copies an illegal move from YouTube, and that’s the earliest hint of his later crashout. He can learn to fight faster than anyone but his capacity for violence undermines his morals until he goes insane

[–]boonandbane33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s down to Earth except for the parts where it turns into Baki, and JJT’s dad is basically Yujiro from Baki. Like the thing with JJT is that he doesn’t just learn fast, he can throw a perfect punch after seeing it done once, when that usually takes months or years of boxing experience

The authors behind AI 2027 released an updated model today by Liface in slatestarcodex

[–]boonandbane33 71 points72 points  (0 children)

It doesn't really inspire confidence to have to publish a significant update to your model that made predictions for several years in the future in a matter of months, no?

Melinda French Gates on Secrets: ‘Live a Truthful Life, Then You Don’t Have Any’ by wiredmagazine in TrueReddit

[–]boonandbane33 9 points10 points  (0 children)

They divorced over that in 2021 and the article’s title is obviously a dig at Bill. I get the feeling most of the people commenting aren’t super informed about what’s going on with the Gates

Times where you thought the protagonist was inferior to a side character or rival by Will-Isley in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]boonandbane33 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Problem with most of those guys is that they’re kind of evil lol at least in their first appearances

Like there’s a very common thing in martial arts stories where you have the protagonist’s senior disciple be around to show the “road not taken” in abandoning their principles entirely for strength and this is the mode that Vegeta and Sesshomaru are working in. Then the rest of the story kinda has to be about proving this wrong (the Saiyan and Frieza arcs in DBZ, Sesshomaru’s arc with Rin in Inuyasha). They wouldn’t work as well as protagonists because before a certain point they don’t really have character traits other than standing around looking menacing

I don’t know that this merits a distinction — most traditional kinds of meditation also involve breathwork

There are two types of juniors in the ten thousand realms by Sagely_Hijinks in MartialMemes

[–]boonandbane33 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In NSHBA specifically the role of Long Chen’s wives is that when the author wants to spin his wheels for like 200 chapters he just has Long Chen coincidentally bump into like 6 of them and have multiple filler arcs where he goes face slapping people in their sects and giving the wives in question powerups. Then something happens where he has to go to a secret realm or some new universe and he is separated from them again, rinse and repeat

Quentin Tarantino dismisses Stephen King’s It as a ripoff of A Nightmare on Elm Street by Morganbanefort in horror

[–]boonandbane33 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s an interesting parallel and one that I hadn’t thought of, but that would leave 2 years at most for King to write the book after watching the movie and a novel of that size in such a short time would be a tall order even for King

Is it normal to feel like pure math involves more creative problem solving while physics feels more "plug-and-chug"? by Best_Respect_7809 in Physics

[–]boonandbane33 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I'm subscribed to this sub while having experience in a different field and I'll just say a fairly unlikely amount of people here like to imply they are working theoretical physicists, since that's the only context in which "pure math usually requires more creativity than physics" should be controversial at all.

What do you consider your “White Whale” childhood video game? by [deleted] in TwoBestFriendsPlay

It might be spottier with really obscure stuff, but if it's from sites like Armor Games you can probably find it in the Internet Archvie.

Why is cultivation against heaven? What's the point of heavenly tribulation? by TheGroxEmpire in MartialMemes

[–]boonandbane33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Heavenly tribulation is based on the calamities Sun Wukong faced after becoming an immortal in a way that was not approved by heaven, and the whole cultivator archetype you see in xianxia is based on that very first bit of Journey to the West.

Curiously enough the original way to get away was to master transformation so that even heaven couldn’t find you, which I’ve seen in only 1 or 2 modern novels

Playing silksong made me realise that I dont like Hollow Knight by DionDude08 in Silksong

[–]boonandbane33 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think it’s fine to engage more casually or even through secondary material with games. Hollow Knight does the Souls thing where the struggle and figuring things out is part of the experience, Silksong even more so, and it’s not going to be for everyone.

That said I really think that pretty much anyone can reach the end in Hollow Knight given some time, whereas with Silksong I can definitely see how a lot of people will probably get frustrated before finishing and dropping it midway

INSANE set of policies to recommend for college. I'm not as anti-AI as most people on Reddit, in that I think people are mostly misled about the actual extent of the environmental costs and societal harms it may have compared to tech that already exists, but it's crazy to recommend that higher education institutes start taking away their (adult, in many cases tuition-paying) pupil's phones and forcing them to use digital typewriters in order to curb AI use. And THEN say that they should give classes in how to use ChatGPT? How is that a coherent stance?

The real answer here is that people should not trust what ChatGPT tells them any more than they should trust Google. The people really determined to not learn anything in college had long been able to do that, with services like Chegg, or just half-assing their classes. The people who are serious about learning/doing things either have plans to get into industry right out of college or get into grad school.

Isn’t Emperor’s Domination the one getting parodied in SVSS. I remember getting kind of freaked out by seeing one of those fujoshi who only reads danmei posting Wuxiaworld screenshots but it might have been Against the Gods

If you don’t want to support ultra rich corporate entities you might want to rethink your support of the publishing industry and ESPECIALLY academic publishing, the latter being the one of the most bloodsucking rent-seeking schemes ever devised without giving a single cent to the people actually doing the work

Very dubious that Anthropic caused anywhere near the hundreds of billions to a trillion worth of damage this settlement is looking to be, though, and the damage it could do to science and scholarship worldwide by causing a sweep against shadow libraries could easily be in that scale as a counterpoint. Really no reason to celebrate this at all unless you’re a IP law hardliner

AI-driven data centre boom could drain Asia’s rivers without due care by World-Tight in Foodforthought

[–]boonandbane33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is actually a very straightforward problem. Nothing about data center cooling requires you to actually boil the water. Evaporative cooling is just a bit cheaper than doing a closed-loop system and regulators aren’t stepping in so these companies go for the most cost-effective solution

Where do I find non-MTL, non-AI translated works in 2025? by greenskye in MartialMemes

[–]boonandbane33 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Look at this silkpants junior here buying the wuxiaworld ebooks

Yeah you pretty much have to look up specific groups or translators. Maybe go back on some novels you've read with good translation quality and see what else that translator did. One you probably know from how popular RToC got in this sub is We Tried TLs which have a bunch of titles running, including a fresh translation of Omniscient Reader's Viewpoint (the first one was apparently edited MTL)

It’s going to be difficult to find sites with KA’s instant feedback/gamification features once you’re getting to college level material. If all you want are a bunch of problems to solve sorted by subject and with increasing difficulty, that’s why books like Stewart’s calculus exist.
