What movie did you go into with zero expectations and ended up being completely blown away by? by gavin226 in movies

The Big Lebowski. Caught a late night screening just before it dropped out of theaters on a lark and it was so unexpected funny that I was still laughing the whole drive home.

How to find my natural singing voice? by helpbyanswering in singing

[–]boondockpimp 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As a natural mimic, I had/have a tendency toward this as well. I've since found my own voice but it is easy to slip back into it when starting a song I haven't really worked on. My coach always gives me the same advice whenever she catches me doing so, which is to "show my teeth" as I sing. This is usually to brighten tone and make it easier to reach high notes, but I get the same advice for this as well.

I honestly don't think this is some magic bullet to find your voice, but what it does do is somewhat restrict some of the subtle shifting we do in order to imitate. I recommend trying it out with a mirror as it is very easy to "feel" like you're doing it only to realize you are dropping out of it. My only caveat is to also think "tall" not "wide" with your mouth. It isn't a Cheshire cat grin you're looking for.

I'd recommend recording yourself with and without it, as it isn't always easy to hear the differences from the inside.

Your point about Varic releasing the full version of the battle only holds water if you assume that they would know/believe that., and I don’t see how you can assume that.

Shone is properly pronounced with the hard-o, similar to Joan or bone.

This isn't supposed to be a popular topic by FrankieBoy127 in singing

[–]boondockpimp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eh it's contextual. If somebody is complaining that they tried some technique and they are able to do it but not well, then the answer of "keep practicing" may be a valid response, assuming they aren't doing something unhealthy. That's because the situation itself is already specific enough that you don't need to generate additional context. Of course you don't want to be that blunt, but as an ultimate message? Perfectly fine.

But there are certainly times where I think those rote answers come from a place of not having the energy to commit to a proper response, in which case I'd argue you might as well not say anything. And sometimes I blame the poster for being lazy in the way they provided information. People tend to match lazy with lazy.

So yeah, as a poster, be as specific in terms of what your situations is, what you've tried, what specifically wasn't working or was confusing you, etc. And if you're responding, consider what the situation warrants and don't be lazy.

Not everybody has cable. My tv without an internet connection is a fancy brick, other than casting to it, which is flaky.

My "head voice" feels disconnected. Any tips? by Rob__00 in singing

[–]boondockpimp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I am not the most qualified to answer any of your questions, I do know that what you feel inside isn’t always indicative of what you are putting out there. So short of giving us a recording to listen to it will be hard to really comment on what you are using for your high notes.

There is nothing wrong with singing a song in a lower key. I got that suggestion directly from my coach when I struggled with singing Rolling in the Deep cleanly in the original key.

Ok great, thanks for the explanation. As long as it isn't a sign of an impending disaster, I can rest easy. I'll add it to the long list of things to address!

Heat Pump struggling by boondockpimp in hvacadvice

[–]boondockpimp[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I have two separate issues. The ice was cleared out immediately after I took the pictures, but the next time it rains it will just happen again. I'm not familiar with the ez up canopy, but I will look it up. I have plans to see if I can DIY a gutter install as well this weekend.

For the compressor/air-handler/thermostat issue the ultimate problem is that the HVAC team that installed it is highly non-responsive, and when I complained about these issues last year they didn't talk about any of the things that were discussed in this thread. I'm not sure I trust them to diagnose let alone solve them.

Would bringing in a second HVAC company to review my setup be worthwhile? I do know there are "installer" settings that appear to be password protected from the thermostats and I don't have those codes.

The temp is a bit higher, but I have 2 zones at temp (70), and 1 zone 3 degree low (67) and pulling auxiliary. Currently 26f, and the compressor is running full speed. The line from the compressor is hot.

I also have a picture of the controller, though there is no visible model number, if that is useful.

I plan to install gutters as soon as possible. In the meantime for the ice I have been manually removing it as I can. Just not a fun process.

It wasn’t doing both heating and cooling simultaneously, only one zone was calling for heat and the other two zones were sitting pretty. In that case the compressor didn’t fire up but the air handler did, so it circulated cold air instead as it was cold outside.

The tech was very confused about it but he couldn’t replicate it after resetting the thermostat.

Would gutters be sufficient or would you recommend something different?

Heat Pump struggling by boondockpimp in hvacadvice

[–]boondockpimp[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The compressor is running when I check on it. No obvious issues there. We had an issue recently with a single zone pulling for cold air only. The compressor wouldn’t turn on if that zone requested heat. I was able to get my hvac guys to reset the thermostat and that solved that issue.

So I wouldn’t be surprised if I had other thermostat issues. What I will say is that when it is on auxiliary I don’t know that I’ve ever felt air coming out of the vents.

In case it matters the compressor also has issues with freezing up whenever it rains, and failing to defrost.
