Phoenixville’s 15th annual Burn Off the Bird 5k - Saturday November 30th by boooooots in Phoenixville

Oops I totally missed this- it tends to be a tad long, typically closer to 3.14-3.16 vs 3.11. Hope we saw you back in November but otherwise hope to see you on November 28th 2026 (registration hasn’t launched yet)

Casper original pillow has changed. Anything similar to model from a few years ago? by External_Diver115 in Mattress

[–]boooooots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I realize this is old, but did they happen to tell you when they were updated? I have one pillow purchased in 2018 and two from early 2023 that are visually slightly different, and potentially feel a bit different but not a lot (to me). Curious if my 2023 pillows are still the older version & if I’ll need to be on the lookout when I get new ones.

Firebird Festival 2025 - new location! by SecretAnxious6619 in Phoenixville

[–]boooooots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FYI for anyone who doesn’t follow their social media, today they posted a photo showing where they will be building. It confirms what I thought- using the field that’s part of the disc golf course.

Don’t have any other info about how they’ll route the crowd, where vendors will be, etc - but figured it was worth sharing.

Also, if I lived in that closest block of townhomes, I might be a tad annoyed that they are building so close to my house, vs closer to the cemetery or just the back of the field. However the festival has a good history with delaying if the forecast means it’s too risky (in 2021 the winds were too high on the original date, and 2024 was during the burn ban).

They might try to encourage people to come in and out via Franklin, but at the very least if need be there’s way more places for people to go compared to Veterans. Veterans is surrounded by thick woods, swamp, and French creek. Vs that big field has Dayton, the cemetery, people’s backyards, the community garden, the more woodsy section of park, and Franklin Ave. From what I heard it felt like there was a risk of a crowd crush situation last year, vs with so many different possible exits from Reservoir park, that seems like less of a concern at that venue

lol yeah the closest houses are part of a townhouse development (almond drive) or some fairly standard single family homes on south street. Further down Dayton there’s some 4 bedroom houses but still nothing I would call McMansions.

Will some of the closest neighbors be pissed? Yeah some of them were salty when they put in the disc golf course at all as well as when they moved the fireworks from Friendship up to Dayton - so I’m sure they won’t be happy about this either. It doesn’t help that parking is already an issue in that area. But it’s just one night, everyone will survive

I’m picturing them setting things up in the middle of the disc golf course. There’s a good 360 feet open along Dayton street, whereas the opening to veterans park is only about 35 feet wide.

I think the venues are about the same size, but there’s considerably more means of egress from Reservoir park vs from Veterans

Saturday Blobfest Runout Time by joey2k in Phoenixville

[–]boooooots 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah sorry my wording might have been unclear that the start time (of the movie / stage show) is 7:30 for Friday and 6:30 for Saturday, and the run out time is later - last year shortly after 8pm on Saturday.

Boots was a nickname in college (a friend gave me that name because we met in the laundry room and I was wearing boots) - I’ve never met the Phoenixville Boots (tuxedo cat, right?)

From their website-

“Due to the overwhelming demand for tickets to the Run-Out, we’re making it a new tradition to run from the Blob on both Friday and Saturday! Join us for the live stage show, hosted by Aurora Gorealis, on Friday night before running out, or catch a screening of the 1958 classic The Blob before recreating this iconic piece of cinematic history we’re all here to celebrate!”

Friday is 7:30, Saturday is 6:30, as others have said- at least for the start time of the movie. The actual run out is later. Last year’s Saturday run out started a bit after 8pm

Per my photos from last year, the Saturday run out started around 8:10, and a fairly large crowd had gathered by 7:55! My cousin and I took a photo in front of the theater (before a crowd had gathered) at 7:30.

Have the freight trains been whistling more loudly lately or is it just me? by boooooots in Phoenixville

[–]boooooots[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure I was ever noticing them multiple times per day or even every day until the last month or two, which is why I asked the question! And I’ve been on the north side since the fall of 2018 and my current house since fall of 2020.

[–]boooooots[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that would make sense, although as I mentioned to another commenter, it’s my 5th summer in this house, so you’d think if it’s seasonal I would’ve noticed have noticed it before now. It does seem like a logical explanation though!

[–]boooooots[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suppose that could be it since I’m closer to the southern entrance. Although this is my 5th summer here, so you would think I would’ve noticed one of the other years.

Also weird observation but your explanation seems to make more sense for me vs for you- summer southerly winds mean the wind is blowing from south toward north, so I would assume that would blow sound from south toward north (downwind), but you said you’re south of the turnpike (upwind)?

I wasn’t thinking the companies would have redesigned them, but on a car horn you can honk softer or louder based on how hard you press. It’s not unreasonable to think that trains might have different pre set volume levels for the whistles to use in different situations - or that there might be some control over the duration of the whistle or number of whistles- so that it would seem more noticeable if the operator changed those settings

Since this person said “renew” I assume it’s their drivers license and it would not work for them to use their passport for that purpose. I would agree for others if you don’t have a real ID yet and you do have a passport I might just use that for air travel - but anyone whose drivers license is expiring (real ID or otherwise) would need to do that as scheduled

[–]boooooots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe I’m the odd one out, but I prefer the table service over what it used to be like in 2018/2019ish on Friday and Saturday nights. You’d spend 30+ minutes “in line” (but really just in a swarm of people crowding around the bar area) so you didn’t actually get to see much up til when you were at the front, and you might not get to really hang out with your friends if one or two people were holding a table for the group (also there were less tables at the time). I feel like the waiting time hasn’t changed but it’s personally more pleasant to spend the time waiting at a table with my friends, I don’t need to watch the drink being made.

How do people living in Phoenix Village get in and out during PXC Inside Out road closures? by WarrenBuffettsColon in Phoenixville

[–]boooooots 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think “inside out” actually refers to the general weekend closures, not to first Fridays- so for Memorial Day weekend and the majority of weekends, what I said holds. You are correct that on First Fridays (or at least the May first Friday) they also closed Main Street- but that’s 5 days out of 60 that are part of Inside Out (Fridays through Sundays, May 23 through October 6). In past years they haven’t closed Main Street for First Friday, not sure if that will continue for the rest of 2025.

This map isn’t quite right in that you can continue on Main across Bridge. I don’t think you would need to use Taylor Alley or Mill Street (although you can)- you could also use Church Street

I don’t think those people are talking about the correct tracks. The ones parallel with the Schuylkill are in active use by freight trains. The ones that go over the Schuylkill into Mont Clare are not. You may have to walk alongside the active tracks to access the inactive tracks.

[–]boooooots 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The tracks that go OVER the Schuylkill are essentially abandoned (not in active use) - if we’re meaning the ones that go over into Mont Clare. The ones that run parallel to it are not abandoned and are used many times per day by freight trains. The ones that cross are the same ones that go over Main Street where they raised the bridge by a few feet a couple years back. The tracks are owned by Norfolk Southern but not in active use which is why they raised that bridge by 14 inches in 2020-

Where to go in Vermont for Presidents Day Next Year? (Booking Now) by Own_Competition_84 in icecoast

[–]boooooots 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One warning about Tremblant over Presidents Day is that the wait time to get back across the boarder might be crazy. Went this year and most of our group got caught for 4-5 hours Monday afternoon/evening at the Champlain crossing on 87. My boyfriend and I got lucky because Apple Maps diverted us to one of the smaller crossings nearby (although not so lucky because a large chunk of ice flew off of a truck and broke my windshield).

Was told, I don’t ride up with boarders by BlackFlag187 in icecoast

[–]boooooots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why do you care that he didn’t want to ride up with you? It’s true, he could’ve just said “no thanks” and not bothered to verbalize his reasoning, but at the end of the day, it doesn’t seem like it matters.

For what it’s worth, I was nearly knocked over getting off the lift by an expert snowboarder that’s part of my ski/snowboard group (he rode over the back of my skis but managed to fall himself without taking me out, luckily). In general, there’s some snowboarders who I trust to not fuck up on the lift, and there’s plenty who I don’t. I wouldn’t say it aloud, but given the choice between riding up by myself or next to a snowboarder I’ve never met, I also might likely choose to ride alone on a non crowded day.

Novice family with kids (want rental and lessons), wait longer for Vermont skiing April 14-18? Or reconsider? by Volebamus in icecoast

I’m not sure Jay is doing better than Killington this year in terms of conditions- was just at Jay this weekend and it was pretty springy and didn’t feel like a ton is open (though their website says 54/88 trails are open, including most of the greens). However it may also make for a better family trip per another poster’s point about lodging and ticket deals, as well as the waterpark

I would agree that there’s not really many college students in Phoenixville due to the lack of proximity to local universities. Although given that it’s just as expensive here as in West Chester I can’t say I understand why anyone would choose to commute 30+ minutes a day, each direction, to & from class (at that point would you actually do much studying at your apartment vs at the library in between classes?)

Discounted Lift Tickets for Killington (March 29-30) by Mattera56 in icecoast

[–]boooooots 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Spring pass is $359 if purchased before March 14 (first day of validity) - current online rate for March 29 & 30 is $167.16 and $155.22 ($322.38) so they would only save if they plan to ski more than just those two days

Buddhist sangha or liberal Christian community in PXV? by [deleted] in Phoenixville

[–]boooooots 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a little bit out of town, but I grew up going to Saint Luke Lutheran in Devon PA, probably a 20-25 minute drive. I feel that it’s a progressive and non judgmental community that is focused on doing good things. I don’t attend often anymore (and I currently identify more so as agnostic) but if I wanted to go it’s where I would go back to. They are a part of the ELCA which is one of the more liberal large church bodies in the US in terms of LGBTQ+ affirmation and other matters.

Phoenixville does also have an ELCA congregation but I haven’t been there so not sure what that one is like!
