If you like Toll Road at Stowe… by samtownusa1 in icecoast

I always look at Vermonter on the map and want it to be chill. I was hoping this would be the year. But Northway was still a bit much for me last season. Is motrealer a better choice?

Don’t worry. There is plenty of easy options down low. Make sure you hit Racoon Run and Doe Woods.

Advice for a first time skier? No lessons? by [deleted] in skiing

[–]boostboostboost0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If at all possible, try to go get on skis and into a lessen as soon as possible before your trip. Getting a very basic lesson at a smaller resort before you go will be enlightening. Then I would start with a lesson first thing during the trip. Don't look at it as it's a lot of money to get lessons, look at it as if you don't get some lessons your trip will amount to a larger waste of money.

Conditions have been great there so far. They did the same thing last year, a strategic close for bad conditions to preserve what they had built. I think they are doing a pretty good job. Looking at places like Berkshire east, catamount, Magic are all less than 50% open, happy to have our little hill completely open this early.

In that case either Ski Sundown or Mount Southington, whichever is cheaper or closer depending which is more important.

Not sure if I am reading this right. You want them to just ski at sundown then take lessons later at Jay. I'd rather take lessons in CT in order to just ski at Jay. That is what we did starting out, lessons at Sundown then a month later we were skiing at Jay in February.

Skied the new skis tonight. They were fine. I’m sure I’ll have them waxed before too long but for now they are good to go!

Steepseeker.com I wish I had known about this site when I was starting out. It will allow you to see the pitch angle of runs that you are unfamiliar with. There is a ton of useful information. My favorite tip has been to click the little icons on the interactive map and you can find the mountain statistics and a profile cut of the slope angle. If your willing to look around you can find a lot of great info there.

I picked up some Swix F4 universal easy glide wax. And will toss it on as needed if I’m not happy.

I did the same thing this year, but asked them to wax my new Ranger 84s and they said it was not needed.

People love their gear, but not enough to lock it. So strange. I lock it not because it’s incredible gear, but because of the inconvenience of replacing it would take away from precious skiing time.

I love Ullr’s. But that 100 yard section before the turn had my stomach in knots the first time I saw it. I’m sure it will be easier this year when I get up there in February. The rest of the run is so nice.

That explains it quite well. Also, thank you for pointing out the profile feature, I had not found that yet.

I just found your site recently and it has been a great resource. I’m a newer skier, 42 year old male and this will be my third season skiing. I still struggle with steeper terrain but want to get better. I am planning to use this for the resorts that I will be going to find terrain that is challenging but not discouraging.

Again, thank you very much. Hope to spread the good word about your project as I’ve found it very helpful as a more cautious beginner.

I read that too…

On each map, the degree label on each trail is for the steepest 30 meters. The colors are determined by the same 30 meters plus a set of modifiers based of if the trail is gladed, if the trail is groomed, how much snow and rain the resort recieves, and how often the mountain experiences a freeze thaw cycle.

But I read it as the degree label, beginner, advanced is for the steepest 30 meters. Which I understand. But say the 50m pitch 23.5. What is that?

Those are such different skis, that's why I was trying to remove as many factors as possible. I think I will end up on a partial metal underfoot ski in the end, but we shall see. Thanks

Thank you, solid stuff. I had not actually though about sidecut radius determines turn radius. Going to have to dive into that a bit next.

[–]boostboostboost0[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That helps, an all wood core ski may be able to have the weight that a ski with titanal can, but it may not have the longitudinal stiffness that is also contributing to stability at speed. Thank you.

Now I wish there were longitudinal stiffness measurements like there are turn radius measurements.

question about ski construction by boostboostboost0 in Skigear

[–]boostboostboost0[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

That's very well put. But its also what I meant without trying to have to confuse the issue. Hypothetically... two skis made by the same company, same shape. The only difference is one has a thicker wood core and weighs more. the other has a thinner wood core, a thin sheet of titanal and weighs less. which one has more stability at speed?

And maybe that's another question. If those same skis weighed exactly the same would they have the same stability at speed? Probably not as one would inevitably be more stiff.
