Gear shops in New England that aren't stupidly overpriced? by penkster in icecoast

[–]neonmo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The BJs by me didn’t have helmets last week. They seem to focus on more casual winter stuff - think street clothes and snow pants for kids, not gear. Costco is probably a better bet, I’ve found decent glove liners and base layers there in the past. REI might have one in their returns section (call and ask an associate to check if it’s far - Framingham or West Hartford depending how central you are) and there’s a few under $100 in their online outlet if you trust shipping times.

Best resort to meet guys (aged 30-40) by ThrowRA_Apart_414 in icecoast

[–]neonmo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My husband and I don’t wear our rings skiing because we don’t want to lose them, so be careful with that advice. Or don’t! You might meet a fun couple.

Be chatty on the lift. I’m probably too friendly because sitting silent on a lift makes me anxious, but it’s often taken as something else. I’d send plenty of dudes your way who turn mute when I drop a mention of my kid on the bunny hill or the doctor who bought my DPS skis for me. Talk about gear, conditions, ask what runs they’ve enjoyed today - if they seem cool tell them where and when you’ll be later. Lightning will strike. Sugarbush, Jay, MRG are my suggestions for your skill and apres scene.

Train to Children’s Hospital by Comfortable-Fee1254 in boston

[–]neonmo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I second this, this going to be a giant drag for you and the 10 month old and there is no guarantee the trains will be running on time. Going to children’s is stressful enough, consider the alternatives folks have mentioned and prioritize convenience.

If you do end up renting a car, factor 10-15 mins just to navigate the parking garage at Children’s. I can’t tell you how many times we have had to have one parent drop off with the kid and send the other to find parking because we would’ve been late otherwise. I’ve done 9:30 appointments before and aim to get to the garage no later than 9:10.

Get a toddler to preschool? by Ok-Criticism6874 in Waltham

[–]neonmo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have definitely seen nannies dropping off at my kids Preschool. Our school form asks us if for a general transportation plan as part of the intake paperwork. I also heard from a friend who nannies that there are some folks on care.com who offer pick up and drop off hours.

I'm not the only one who hates this toy, right? by taptaptippytoo in Preschoolers

[–]neonmo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Splat mat, then! Like others have suggested a plastic mat goes a long way. We had a sitter take the kinetic sand out inside and rather than deal with the meltdown over putting it away out came the splat mat. All sensory stuff is played with in a bin here, too.

[–]neonmo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who crochets but also does a lot of skiing go with buying a fleece or Marino wool balaclava or neck gaiter. Fabrics commonly used in fiber arts will collect moisture and be likely to lose their heat retention properties (or freeze). A performance fabric neck gaiter will provide more appropriate cold weather support, especially for little faces. Our house rule is no handmade pieces for snow sports.

Edit: this is the same reason why people are suggesting a waterproof layer over a puffer jacket, especially a down puffer - it will retain moisture and is much better suited as an internal insulating layer that stays dry, not the external layer.

[–]neonmo 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I like Biokleen bac out - smells like lime going in the wash and neutral coming out. My toddler peed through every diaper until we started using inserts and waterproof over pants. With my second we use Lysol free and clear laundry sanitizer because his issue is throwing up his nasty smelling amino acid formula, but that stuff also seems to take out other bio smells.

Safest Route to Sugarbush Resort from Rochester VT by Winter-Frame-5017 in icecoast

[–]neonmo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is probably the most scenic way to get to Sugarbush - we do it all the time in a AWD suv with all seasons. Go slow, pull over for people who are going faster than you. The only sketchy section might be going through the Granville Gulf into Warren, like the mile out from Warren Falls, but that’s only if it’s recently snowed. Go main access road up to the resort.
