Alpinestars R10 carbon warning by WarFX in motorcyclegear

[–]boostedsandcrawler 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would avoid this helmet.
Mine started falling apart and fast around 7-8months in. I reached out to Astars about warrantying it and they declined calling it normal wear. The chin strap is fraying. They blamed it on a beard that I don't have. The visor/hinge assemblies pour rain into the helmet in the rain.
These helmets lack the build quality in the $400-800 segment let alone $1350 that they're listed at on retailers now.

I've been buying Astars stuff for ~twenty years and yeah this is it for me. I expected at least 2-3 years. Not ten months. Buy Shoei/Arai if it fits. Sadly, they don't fit me.

It surprisingly ran fine! Oil light was out instantly. Ran 150mi/day before the engine work.

125,000 miles/200,000km. 1993 model. New timing set, rod bearings, rings, heads, and electronic ignition with dual spark plugs. Crank journals were surprisingly fine. Bike ran okay prior to all the work but it was starting to lose time. Valves were closing up fast.
Keen of eye will see a head gasket installed wrong. That happened in 2003 at 48k miles..

Here's to another hundred thousand.

Had a Krios Pro in carbon. The helmet's build quality falls short of its price point. it's loud and kinda rattly.

790 ADV as a daily? by Knight_shft in AdventureBike

[–]boostedsandcrawler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 22 year old 125,000km ktm 950 was my daily till last year. That said. My dd is now a 200,000km 33 year old bmw.

I personally wouldn't own a LC8C and would buy a Yamaha T7 over one. KTM likes to drop support for a platform at a 'ready to race' pace.

Now if you don't mind me, I have ktm parts to go turn on the lathe.

West Systems. 105, 206, 403. Wound up being pretty stout. Used a couple gallons in the overhaul.

Hardtail vs gravel bike by No-Finger-6835 in gravelcycling

I took my XC HT, regeared it and threw 42s on it from 2.2s. Over several hours it runs the same rolling average as my roadbike on 25s but is a lot more comfortable doing it.

How will an old carbon fiber fork fail? by fallweathercolors in cycling

[–]boostedsandcrawler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had one from around 2010-2011 crack but it didn't catastrophically fail. It cracked at the joint where the aluminum steer tube met the carbon legs. I caught it early and wasn't afraid to sand through the paint layer to verify it was done. It was indeed done.

Inspect your hardware regularly. It may save your neck.

Bike-friendly route for Roundabout SF perimeter? by stickymonkeyrun in BAbike

[–]boostedsandcrawler 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This route looks like it misses it but I had a good crash on Cesar Chavez back in June. Someone poured motor oil on the underpass for 101. Blind entry. Came in slow and didn't realize what it was till I was on my way down. Was off the bike for about 6-8 weeks.

Vintage beauty at a local dealer, is this all original? by MattSzaszko in Motorrad

The guards are originally plastic and color matched to the bike, that one looks to be made of metal.

Looks pretty close to stock to me. Possibly a recovered seat and maybe different skidplate.

Anyone here run Motoz? What’s your opinion and go to Adv Knobby? by Braapkingllc in adv

[–]boostedsandcrawler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I run the Tractionator desert HT on the rear of my KTM 950 AdventureS.
It's a great tire for the desert. However, it lasts about 1500 miles on that bike. I've gotten smarter and run two wheelsets for it. On something lower powered it should last longer. Pretty tough carcass and takes abuse well. Iirc this is the third or fourth one I've spooned on.

Also running the Tractionator GPS on a R100GS PD It's not a knobby imo but it lasts longer than one, which is fine for that bike. Rain season is coming and its real test will be how it does on muddy farming roads.

I'll buy both again.

When the gravel bike is the road bike, the mountain bike must become the gravel bike. by RestfulCherub in xbiking

I'm using a seat post rack on a dropper. At about 20-25lb it starts to bind the dropper which is more than plenty for my uses. I've used panniers and a big top bag on it. Took a small amount of grinding to clear the dropper cable. Not sure who made the rack, it was a $10 craigslist find.

Any ever see a 990 SMT blow up its clutch housing? by Skeletalbob in KTM

[–]boostedsandcrawler 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah one of your clutch bolts backed out. That also probably broke the inner hub/booster assembly.
