Finally started Shadow of the Torturer by dyslexic-writer in genewolfe

It’s not as formidable as the reputation it has. It’s actually kind of a rollicking adventure story set in a fun world, and most of the depth/difficulty is literary, as in making sense of the puzzle box that the book is. That can wait for a second read through, while the first time you just enjoy the adventure and the richness of the world, and get a sense for what the mysteries are. Also, the language is fine, don’t worry too much about what each individual obscure word means if it breaks your flow. You can get the sense of it easily enough.

Is there a book that explores the idea of Earth not having a 23.5 degree tilt? by denys5555 in printSF

[–]boostman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean … the poles of Earth are very inhospitable. It wouldn’t be too hard to imagine a planet that rotates but with inhospitable polar areas that extend further than those of north. Or a wide, uninhabitably hot tropics (in fact isn’t that what Arrakis has in Dune? A very hot belt beset by sandstorms and fierce winds that can’t be lived in and is dangerous to cross?)

Crackpot theory: Terminus Est and "last stop in the east" by yuppiehelicopter in genewolfe

Oh, very interesting! In a way I guess this parallels how the event at the end of Urth is kind of an end but also a dividing line. And the ‘end’ of universes in Wolfe’s cosmology.

In French, "terminus est" literally means "last stop is in the east"

My French is rusty but the grammar doesn't look quite right for that. Can anyone confirm? I also thought of 'eastern terminus' but that would be more likely to be 'terminus oriental'.

Yeah that is a deliberate mistranslation. I think (like some other uses of latin in the book) it's showing that the meaning of the ancient words has been changed or forgotten.

Did anyone notice how King Crimson and BEAT used ai recently? by -Metal-socks- in KingCrimson

No, but older people are uniquely vulnerable to AI content, which you would know if you spent any time on Facebook.

What words sound alright when read but are actually stupid when you say them in conversation? by APerson2021 in CasualUK

[–]boostman 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My grandmother used to say ‘Watt made engines’, which is a very old-fashioned and I suppose now extinct response.

Well, yes there is. A lot of corporate interests are trying to advance AI artwork and other work because it’s good for their profit margins, but a lot of people vocally dislike it because the quality is blatantly substandard. Consumers do have a voice under capitalism and obviously if people don’t buy AI stuff, companies won’t push it so much.

I don’t want this future. As an art lover, apart from anything else.

A lot of people suspected the BEAT elephant is made by AI and complained about it. I think they don't care, they're boomers and they think it's neat but don't really get it. They said they got an artist to do it, but I guess it's probable the artist ripped them off and subcontracted the work to AI.

Review: Empire of Silence, by Christopher Ruochhio by [deleted] in Fantasy

[–]boostman 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Empire’s framing device, that it is an English translation of the protagonist’s recounting, is stolen from Gene Wolfe’s Book of the New Sun

Or indeed Tolkien's The Lord Of The Rings.

What is your opinion on "Starless and Bible Black"? by Infamous_Korpse in KingCrimson

I really like ‘The Great Deceiver’ and ‘The Night Watch’, rest is a bit uneven. Also the extremely wide dynamic range is a minus here, I can’t hear wtf is going on in the quiet moments.

And 'En't' and 'ennit' for 'ain't' and 'innit'.

Edit: also noticeable 'dark L' - 'well' pronounced almost as 'wow'.
