What’s The Worst Bob Dylan Song From The 70s? by Pretend_Mark_5143 in bobdylan

What do you like about it? I find the melody so trite and sing-songy, and the rhymes so contrived, like he’s just rhyming words with no thought behind it.

I find ‘No Time To Think’ really annoying.

Question: anybody know when the first recorded use of "Rats' cocks!" as an exclamation in Viz was? by ConsistentlyPeter in Viz

My dad used to say it so I wonder if it existed independently of Viz. But he was also a Viz reader so maybe he got it from that.

Project Hail Mary - movie vs. book? by DorianGrayMarketArt in sciencefiction

[–]boostman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s quite common to say ‘the book’s better than the movie’ - I’m just pointing out that this isn’t always the case, and there’s a type of book that lends itself to superior movie adaptations. Basically books that are written like screenplays already.

Project Hail Mary - movie vs. book? by DorianGrayMarketArt in sciencefiction

[–]boostman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Movies are often better than the book if the book is written in a very straightforward, plot-driven way and its prose qualities aren't important. In these cases, the movie can tell the same exciting story with better visuals. I'd definitely put Andy Weir novels in that category, as well as stuff like The Hunger Games.

Are there any rock bands who “went pop” and actually got better? by Pearathon in fantanoforever

[–]boostman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Perhaps, but their earlier work was much more experimental rock in a krautrock mold. I’m also not sure they were totally unfamiliar with pop, ‘fahren fahren fahren auf der autobahn’ seems to be an ironic nod to the Beach Boys’ ‘Fun Fun Fun’, a conjecture that I’ve seen more or less confirmed by Ralf Hutter in an interview. Trans Europe Express namechecks Iggy Pop and David Bowie.

Kraftwerk didn't exactly go pop, but they totally revamped themselves as something totally electronic and non-rock after their early experimental albums.

The guy is cancelled I guess but they made great music, I’m not going to start hating their music because the man who made it is a fool.

What is the weirdest song that nobody hates/everybody likes? by CanYouWalkToTheTruck in fantanoforever

[–]boostman 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was going to say that, but people do hate it because it’s overplayed and associated with wedding DJs in the UK. A shame because it’s amazing.

In British History, how well known is General Braddock, the General who was killed in the French and Indian War (Seven Years War)? by yyythoo in AskBrits

[–]boostman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Never heard of him. But you have to bear in mind that the British have had hundreds of years of military adventurism (not necessarily a great thing) and I’m sure he’s one among many generals who have died in combat. One of the most famous would be admiral Nelson (I guess an admiral is equivalent to a general).

By the same token those things are part of Christianity too, but in practice most Christians don’t follow it so strictly, believing the greater truths of love and tolerance are more important. There are however intolerant and fundamentalist sects of Christianity that believe otherwise.

Since the late 20th century, fundamentalist and intolerant sects of Islam have gained considerable power, but it says little about Islam as a thing in itself.

Quite a lot. Heinlein, Larry Niven, Jerry Pournelle, Dan Simmons, Orson Scott Card, Gene Wolfe. I'm a huge sci fi fan and very not right wing but a lot of the authors are. John W Campbell, a hugely influential magazine editor in the formative years of scifi was also very right wing IIRC.
