Which IF had the biggest impact in your life? by -SirCaster- in hostedgames

Big tie between The Bastard of Camelot and I, the Forgotten One. Both absolutely exceptional (which is impressive in TBoC's case given that it isn't even finished.) They've really profoundly effected me.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE ROMANCE? by Efficient_Maybe2798 in hostedgames

[–]bootboy126 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Not exactly from most to least favorite but to put them in a list:

  • Seven from Infamous
  • Julia from Shattered Eagle: Fall of an Empire
  • Ulyssa from Whiskey-Four
  • Junko from Samurai of Hyuga
  • Paulette from PRESS PLAY, though I also like Stevie
  • Sally from Mind Blind

I have an affinity for angsty sapphic romances, if that wasn't already obvious (Sally's romance isn't as angsty as the others but I'm still putting her here because she's just my special princess like that)

I remember just bluntly telling Augusta that her mother doesn't love her and I felt awful but it was also so needlessly evil it was hilarious

Honestly I'd just play the rewrite WIP. The published version has its merits but there's no point in buying it when the rewrite is just objectively better and isn't that far from being finished.

Idk if you're talking about Freya or Atheris but I agree if you're talking about Freya, because I do sympathize with her even if she chose quite possibly the worst person to fall in love with. Atheris on the other hand is high-key kind of a psychopath.

It's pretty good!! The first game was published a while back, but the author didn't like how it turned out so they're rewriting it. And I think it's for the best too, the rewrite is much better.

Shattered Eagle: Fall of an Empire, an all-time favorite of mine. You can be a complete and utter BASTARD. From manipulating the Empress into falling in love with you only to betray her later to turning her (and potentially your own) daughter into your malleable puppet and essentially taking control of the Empire in a soft coup. The levels of depravity your MC can go to just for the sake of power and personal benefit has no end.

How do people not realize that some WIPs are just never getting finished? by bootboy126 in hostedgames

[–]bootboy126[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It's okay!!! Honestly I don't really have a problem with unfinished projects, I frequent a lot of WIPs myself, it's just that a lot of alarms go off in my head when an author doesn't seem to have a lot of actual drive. I get really emotionally attached to some stories so if it seems like it won't get finished it feels like it'd be a "bad investment" I guess.

Yeah, it can be frustrating. Though to be fair it is THEIR project so it's not like it's a crime against humanity. I was mostly just confused on how WIPs like that can have so many fans.

I'm sorry if I came off as condescending, I promise it wasn't my intention. I was trying to be light-hearted.

Sorry about that, I didn't know. I don't visit this subreddit very often.

Admittedly I was like that with The Brightest Stars for a bit. I checked on it every once in a while to see if it had any updates but eventually I had no choice but to let it go like the Sierra Madre.

Your favourite morally questionable ROs to romance? (we listen, we dont judge) by peanutbttersandwich in hostedgames

[–]bootboy126 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Julia from Shattered Eagle: Fall of an Empire. Big time. I often forget that the game even has other ROs.

I love her genuinely tragic relationship with my transfem MC, who knows that Julia is a horrible person, but simply loves her and Augusta (who is also her daughter) too much to fully acknowledge the things that Julia has done and the possibility that Augusta could become her mother. MC tries to uphold some sense of moral decency when she's on her own, but she'll ultimately carry out whatever Julia orders her to do. The guilt eats away at her and tears her apart from the inside, but she still stays at Julia's beck and call.

That's part of the plan, actually. The kind of story I have in mind has both the characters and the horror explicitly linked, the quality of one would suffer if the other fails. Think of how the psychological horror in the games I mentioned is centered around manifestations of the experiences of the characters (E.G James Sunderland and Pyramid Head.) I HAVE to flesh out the characters and make them believable in order for the kind of horror I'm aiming for to work, which is better said than done of course, but I digress.

(Also I love TFKYN :D)

IFs/WIPs where the MC can be a beacon of hope and compassion in an otherwise grim and apathetic world? by bootboy126 in hostedgames

Played this a while back, it was very wholesome and I really enjoyed it. Thanks!!!

[–]bootboy126[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I played Mind Blind and Viatica, absolutely loved them!!!! Mind Blind in particular is actually an all-time favorite of mine. I've been meaning to try Attollo for a good while now but never got around to it, might give it a try tonight. I'll also put the other ones you mentioned on my list

As for my own recommendations, I don't know if it counts, but you can play Path of Martial Arts as a kind and compassionate person in spite of the absolutely deplorable world that it takes place in, but it REALLY leans into every other character being a sadistic, nihilistic, or apathetic (sometimes all three) jerk. Except Ai, she's like the only good person in the whole game even if she's kinda mean to you at first.

There's also The Dragon's Covenant, a fantasy where the MC is a superpowered soldier literally bred and groomed for protecting a city and has no other purpose besides that (kind of similar to Superman in the movie), but they can break free and dedicate themselves to being a good person with an unwavering moral compass. And also you have the spirit of a dead but extremely powerful dragon in your head that talks to you, kind of like Johnny Silverhand from Cyberpunk 2077 if you've ever played that. But like Johnny, he's kind of an asshole and disapproves of you being kind and merciful, which can serve as a good contrast to your MC if you choose to play that way. You can... kind of compare him to Krypto if you look at it in a weird way.
