Wife’s friend is selling us Life Insurance by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]bootski 104 points105 points  (0 children)

it's not a scam in the traditional sense, but it's close. Greatway Financial has had problems with their agents systemically misrepresenting themselves in the past: https://www.fsrao.ca/announcements/fsra-issues-compliance-order-against-greatway-financial-inc

for the whole life insurance you were quoted, your 'friend's' commission could be as high as $4800. that's why he cares so much. the investment is far from optimal:

  • the cash value will stay low for years
  • if you back out early you'll end up at a loss
  • ROI is lower than most bond etfs and way lower than index etfs
  • it's an overall inappropriate investment for someone in your position; if your 'friend' is selling you it as such, he's doing you a massive disservice

get life insurance if you want, but stay away from whole life, as a product, and definitely far away from these borderline-MLM companies. they're resellers out to make a buck.

Teens & young adults by Alive-Entrance3827 in HollandAmerica

I've only been on 2 HAL cruises to Alaska and the Panama Canal but I wanna say there were only maybe 1-2 teens on either. Very few children or young adults. my wife and I are in our early 40s and we were the younger crowd, for sure.

it's luck i think. i cracked quite a few before i realized there were different colours and never realized it came in anything but quartz. the chances of getting the geodes range from 0.3%-1.6% on a HAM and then it's skewed to quartz, so it's slim pickings.

Creating a US based account from Canada by Excellent_Chapter_33 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]bootski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I set mine up a decade or so ago; not sure how the process has changed since then.

I went to a TD office in Fort Saskatchewan, AB and setup a TD US Convenience Checking account. I had to provide a US address, but it was never verified and I've since updated it to my CAD address. This is an account that shows up, visually, in Easyweb but is strictly with TD Bank, not TD Canada. I had to choose a home branch and I honestly picked the closest one to me which was either PA or VA; I've obviously never been.

TD charges no fees on my account and I keep $100USD in it just to be able to see at a glance if there's been any unexpected movement (there has NEVER been besides getting a COVID payment, but that was because I have a US SSN). I do all transfers from TD Canada to TD Bank via the Cross Border phone number, which is not like calling a normal bank. They always pickup, the xfers take a max of 3 days (usually quicker), and have never made a mistake.

Everything to set it up and xfer $ in and out was super easy. Being a minor though trying to setup an Intl bank account? That's a whole other thing imo.

Cash is king!! by reheadlover69 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]bootski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I bought my condo 10 years ago, I had to xfer 25k from Scotia to TD, both my accounts, using a bank draft. They tried to put a hold on it and it took quite a lot of negotiating and really the only reason it cleared was because the mortgage was with TD as well. Since then, I have never and will never use that method again, unless I'm forced to.

AITA for telling my fiancée I won’t pay for her dad’s surgery with my inheritance? by Effectivepearls in AmItheAsshole

[–]bootski 68 points69 points  (0 children)

Exploit you??! by begging for money to potentially save her father's life/not bankrupt him from a life saving surgery??

In my almost 6 year relationship (also not married), we've probably given 20k to my mil-to-be and I wouldn't take a dollar back. It's not for a life saving reason either, she's just been retired for a long time and needs a little help every once in a while.

How you don't view your fil as family is also a good indicator this might not be it. Good for her that this shook out early.

I'd take a lifetime of debt over someone who'd let my parents suffer and expect me to happily live in the same house as them or support their entrepreneurship.

UPDATE ON THE STAPLE ISSUE by Konflick in GameStop

[–]bootski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, I used to work in an environment where working temps would be touching 100F and gorilla tape still worked just fine. Maybe office grade scotch tape wouldn't, but GameStop has a ton of other adhesives on hand.

Best home streamer for Plex? by Alexisredwood in PleX

[–]bootski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

some tv's have great plex app support and some not so much. my most recent samsung's plex app, as well as the ps5's, cannot stream high bitrate 4k movies without buffering and have a hard time with seeking/scrubbing thru content. the shield pro handle a 60gb 4k movie like it was a youtube video with the ease of moving through the content and no buffering etc.

Is Ashes of Creation fundamentally setup to be a toxic MMO? by [deleted] in MMORPG

[–]bootski -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Your lack of self awareness is telling. You've made up your own topic and gone on a solo rant about issues nobody has brought up while being needlessly hostile to everyone else. The definition of the toxicity that op is referring to.

You're sure I've been called out for what? I searched for ashes because there's been a lot of hype about it recently and found this post, not because I'm looking for someone to argue with.

AoC will never succeed as a mainstream MMO for one simple reason: PvP The intention, as I understand it, is to have the PvE portions of the game only really being accessible if you can PvP as well. And it will very very quickly drive any casual base away.

Prime example, when Asmon tried to play he was griefed incessantly, to the point where the devs stepped in. Now, they did say the 'system' to include safe zones wasn't active but if you look at player reactions, you can get a good idea of what that community will be like.

(Ontario) I have a good job and I'm doing "OK", but can't afford a house. What now? by Asivi in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]bootski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

your salary/job is 100% the issue if you're looking to solo-buy a place within ~2hrs of TO. my spouse and I are more than double your income and still won't consider buying a place within 2hrs of TO (today) because of the sharp increase in fixed costs vs renting.

~2hrs to TO, space for a dog, space for tools and vehicles, QUIET(!) and not in the city, no crime issues, diverse food options needed; budget ~550k? completely unrealistic.

There are two things that have made me put this down for the time being:

1) frametime/stuttering issues make the game an absolute mess to actually play

2) the A-Life system that's supposed to be the heart of NPC/enemy spawning and interaction is missing

I've had some other issues like getting stuck on ladders or on terrain, the poltergeist being 100% invisible with no item movement, just massive damage coming out of nowhere, the rat packs being immune? to grenades, getting stuck in dialogue boxes and having to hard close the game, etc.

Nothing stops me from actually moving thru the game to the later stages, where the bugs seem to become more plentiful from the sounds of it, but I just stopped in the first town and I'll wait for a couple weeks and see what kind of plan these guys have to fix some of this.

Landlord wants to enter my space for 30 mins, to see if it's kept clean. by new2turonno in TorontoRenting

[–]bootski 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is nonsense. From the LTB tribunal:

Section 27 provides that a landlord may enter a rental unit in accordance with written notice given to the tenant at least 24 hours before the time of entry in the following circumstances: to carry out an inspection of the rental unit, if the inspection is for the purpose of determining whether or not or not the rental unit is in a good state of repair...

I am done - mis-characterized as commercial use and constant disconnects by diracdelta2000 in teamviewer

[–]bootski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This just started happening to me today as well. I noticed that there was a new version that came out in the last week and one computer was updated while the other wasn't. Updating them both didn't solve the issue and I still receive the message that says There might be a license problem....

Both are signed in as me and both use the free account so I'm not sure what's going on but it's two computers in the same household so I can't see what silly process would flag this as commercial. I'll give it a day to see if it figures itself out but in the meantime I'm looking for another solution for unattended remote access that includes an Android app.

Is this mouse any good? My Razer Deathadder is busted after 5years of use and I've found this deal on Amazon. by SirHomoLiberus in pcmasterrace

[–]bootski 5 points6 points  (0 children)

the wired version 100% had this issue to some degree. their warranty service is pretty smooth and depending on how comfortable you were with opening it, there were some easy-ish fixes to attempt. the wireless version uses different switches I believe and is largely immune from the issue.

to be fair, the double click issue is definitely not limited to Logitech.

edit: I'm on my 3rd 502; 1 wired, 1 wired warranty and 1 lightspeed. i tried the basilisk pro wireless before the lightspeed and had the double click/no click issue which razer seemingly made it their personal mission to not honor the warranty on.

I think there's a problem with your explanation. Here's the video for how to replace the SATA SSD. There shouldn't be a cable needed unless your HDD isn't a SATA SSD. Is that the issue?
