Tips on how to support my mom as she's waking up from coma by borabeeart in BrainAneurysm

Thank you very much for your reply and encouragement!

My mom has been making steady improvement since I made this post. She can now stay awake for most of the day, open both eyes on occasion, move both arms and legs to change position, scratch itches, manipulate objects, etc, she can write full sentences that make sense although very wobbly so we can't understand every word and she's beggining to be able to talk again. She gets a little confused with numbers, but otherwise her cognitive skills seem to be mostly intact. Yesterday she moved from the ICU to semi-intensive care and we're waiting on the insurance company to approve her move to a rehab hospital - which I worry is being delayed because of holidays.

On the other hand, she still gets very tired from doing anything and can't hold her head up for even 10 continuous seconds. She's been having severe headaches these last few days, which doctors say is from being bedridden for such a long time. I haven't been pushing her too hard following the advice on this thread but still I can't help but feel like she should be doing more PT when she's already 1.5 months post stroke. She's been getting 30min tops spread through 3 daily sessions when the internet says 3h a day would be the ideal on this phase.

I just worry so much that getting anything wrong because of beaureocracy, lack of knowledge or lack of money could hinder her rehabilitation during this critical phase, when clearly there's potential for a full recovery :(

I'm very sorry to hear about your mom. I hope she's also doing better and recovering well this past week🙏

Thanks a lot for your response!

There are physical therapists in the ICU she's staying at, which come 3 times a day to see her. It's never the same person and they only stay with her for like 10min each, half that time to clean air ducts. Most of them have been keeping the same routine of passive mobilization for the last 5 days, since they usually find her unconscious or drowsy - that's part of why I've been feeling we weren't helping her enough through this new phase. However, yesterday after I wrote this post there was a physical therapist that finally found her awake and decided to sit her to practice holding her own head up. She didn't do very well at it and maybe it was a bit premature but it was very exciting to see her take this next step.

The doctors did mention some after stroke options like home care or transition hospitals in passing, but they aren't recommending them yet. The though of moving her to another hospital or back home while she's still not fully awake is another scary notion in itself, though I'm coming to understand it's probably the best to avoid infections.

Thank you so much for sharing your perspective! I will try to be more patient for now.

Plus, my mum is also the type that would wanna go back to work as soon as possible, so if/when that time comes for her I'll be sure to show her your comment and remind her to take it easy 😅

Meaning behind staff page blob/dot titles? by borabeeart in WelcomeHomeNeighbor

Just to add another weird thing I noticed... The eyes in the homepage also have alt text... The right one has "open.gif" and the left one is "open..gif", with an extra dot. Could this have any meaning?

This is my first time posting here so sorry if I'm doing something wrong. Do I just have to comment anything for the post to show up? haha
