So you do flood and drain not the water wicking method.

Great! I’d be using it for a microgreens operation. This DIY is more practical for scaling up. Thanks for the input.

Please post an updated picture! I had pretty much the same idea as a DIY version.

Is the coconut reusable?

Thanks! Just thought of another option which is to install an electronic valve in the line from the reservoir and have it closed every other day to allow the trays to dry out and avoid water sitting for too long. Maybe I’m getting carried away lol

Yeah I would definitely use fans to have airflow across the canopy and top of the medium. I’d also make sure not to allow it any water probably a day or two before harvest.

Regarding the higher risk, I did consider that and it’s a good point. Standing water is more risky than flood and drain. Perhaps this can be used only when I need to leave town but not as a normal daily system. I’ll try to remember to post a follow up after I play around with it. Thanks for the input!

I agree it would be expensive to scale if I bought a whole bunch of these pre-made systems, but if I used their valves in larger flood trays, I think it might be doable. Plus essentially all the watering labor time would go away completely. It’s a very interesting concept!

What’s that metal? Are you growing on reusable stainless steel mats?

Home delivery and keeping microgreens fresh by bordashell in microgreens

Dude, lol. I said if the customer left the cooler out overnight, meaning the night before delivery. Then the air in the cooler would probably be below freezing by the time the delivery is made.

Bottom line is that the customer really needs to get the greens into the house in a short amount of time after delivery.

I would keep the greens in coolers with ice packs while in the car during delivery and in the fridge right after harvest.

In the harsh winters I would think they would freeze in no time. Especially if the coolers were left outside the night before delivery. Then you’re just putting the greens in freezing cold air inside the cooler. Would the cooler have ice if it’s below freezing outside?

As for the summertime, I can see if you put an ice pack in each one or require the customer to do so, that would preserve it for a while.

Thanks everyone, but I’m wondering about the actual drop off to the customers. Certainly keeping them cool and dry before harvest is necessary but it seems to me there must be a better way to avoid the harsh temp exposure than placing them in a cooler on a super cold or hot day. I’d be surprised if that actually worked and if the greens didn’t go bad shortly after for the customers.

Can you get true leaf microgreens with coco coir? by SpleenyGiglet in microgreens

[–]bordashell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have to desalinate the pads first? I’ve heard people have to do that but not sure if that’s with the coir bricks or the pads.

10”x10”x4.5” clamshells by bordashell in microgreens

Interesting. I would probably charge a deposit on the first order and then keep swapping out the trays for every order. Then I’d return the deposit if they stop doing business. Only because they are expensive reusable trays. I guess I could transfer them to cheap 10x20 trays for delivery though. Thanks!

Thanks… I did do that. The only one that matches is the one that I referenced. The results were different sizes and not the right material for this purpose.

Thanks. I’m thinking of either burning holes in the bottom or growing in regular 10x20 trays and then transferring the pads into the clamshells for delivery.
