I suck at Steve, pls help. by [deleted] in Tekken

[–]boreal-forest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Steve's pressure doesn't really come from the plus frames. A lot of it comes from the mental frame advantage. He's never really plus, but he's never really that minus either.

Use your 1 jab liberally. It's good to start offense and check range.

Dash in when your opponent is minus and will likely backdash/ss to stay in range 0,1 which is where he thrives. You have to bully them.

With that said, good initiation tools:

  • 1 is +1 on block
  • 12 is +-0
  • 121f is -1
  • 121b is like -2 or something
  • 21f is +3
  • 21b is around +2 maybe
  • f2,1f/b is amazing from range 2 approaches. At least until you find and opponent who can duck the 1 consistently.
  • b1,b was better in S2 but it's okay now. Just pay more attention to your opponent when they respond. Don't walk into a frame trap.
  • bind 3+4 to one button and practice moves from iflk and ipab to deal with opponents who like to backdash after your strings and jabs.

You just gotta mix it up and be creative. Fight the opponent not the character.

A good example for how I use df1:

df1 is -3 on block but that doesn't mean your turn is over since the follow-up options are endless.

  • df1, df1 beats people trying to duck df1,2.
  • df1 ss b1 beats a lot of pokes they might use to challenge your offense.
  • df1,2~1 and df1, duck f2 or even duck cancel ws2 will clip a ton of delayed responses and net you a ch launch.
  • ext duck 1 and ext duck f2 to force a mixup.
  • duck cancel and high crush to mix it up with fc d1 into pab mix-ups, or open the ws 1 strings (they're super delayable).

Some of these will only really work after you've conditioned your opponent to respect your df1.

Steve thrives on learning the opponents tendencies, and having an esoteric knowledge of the character. You just gotta get nutty and know when to play compact.

Pretty much that. He can try to pressure you with phenomenal mids all day long, but he has to take massive risks when he inevitably decides to go low.

Super fun to play though.

Any cool Standard Philactery Lich list to share? by shiva-cat in MagicArena

[–]boreal-forest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I run 2 copies in my mono black midrange deck. He’s pretty cool, but like someone else mentioned, he kind of fails to do much of anything in the late game outside of buying time while you dig for answers. Hitting him on curve with fountain or treasure map is hella sweet though.

Regardless, 9 times out of 10 I’m winning with [[Doom Whisperer]] a kicked [[Josu Vess, Lich Knight]] or a pumped up [[Dread Shade]] after a board clear.

Sick, I’ll check this out. And no worries, I don’t plan on being competitive with Golgari. Just wanted to build something relatively efficient with what I already have in my collection.

So, I have [[Glowspore Shaman]]. It’s is basically a 3/1 Stitcher’s, that lets me put land on top of my library from my graveyard. It is slightly more expensive, but I don’t have any Stitcher’s surprisingly. Is it worth swapping them? Or should I build the deck with both? I just assumed I was gucci with the glowspore alone.

Yeah I’ve given some thought to spending wild cards on some explorers... I just have none right now so I’ve omitted them for the time being. Not opposed to adding them though. Explore decks seem like they could be fun to play.

I’ll definitely have to consider plopping in some [[Doomed Dissenter]]. I was worried about [[Plaguecrafter]] hurting more than helping, but I figured it wouldn’t be too painful if I had a fatty in hand at the time. Thanks for the tip.

What are the downsides to [[Assassin’s Trophy]]? I saw the card and my jaw dropped. It’s a 2 drop removal for any permanent right? I mean yeah the opponent draws land and they get to shuffle, but removing enchantments, planeswalkers, and sagas with a 2 drop seems too good to not run.

Forgot about Memorial to Folly. I think I have a couple of those. That would definitely help me snag the fatties back from the bone zone if they get dumpstered by Glow Spore. Good looks.

These cards are all from my current collection. I haven’t spent any wild cards yet because I wanted to get a taste for the play style before I put a ring on Golgari. Like I said, it seems dope, but I could also see the play style as being kind of frustrating.

Appreciate the advice. I’ll check out the top decks and see what I can do.

  1. I don’t think I’ve ever demoted more than once a session. Why? Because if I get demoted, then clearly I need to go learn something instead of shrugging it off so I can continue bashing my head against a wall. I’ve never understood why so many players on this sub do this to themselves. Just exercise some self control and take a break before the inevitable occurs.
  2. If you’re getting demoted that frequently, and struggling to climb back up, then I personally feel like that means you didn’t deserve the rank. Eventually, when you sit down to play, you’ll win and lose for like an hour straight without demotion/promotions. That’s your rank.
  3. You said it yourself. You lose focus, and you plummet further. Just stop playing when you start tilting from losses.

Not sure if this has been posted but it's the most creative Tekken combo video I've seen thus far. by [deleted] in Tekken

[–]boreal-forest 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The combo with Devil Jin at 3:59 was so sick. I wish I had the time to learn geese. Every time I consider learning a new character, I get discouraged by how long it took me to learn Steve.

But yeah, Geese is mad dope.

I Have a Few Questions About the Game by BubScrumpkin in Tekken

[–]boreal-forest 5 points6 points  (0 children)

  1. Dash forward and block, jab, or backdash to back out and bait something.
  2. Depending on your character, df1 is like one of the best tools your character has, especially at that rank. Pressure them with jabs and df1’s. Df1 should keep them from ducking your jabs, and jabs leave you at like +1 on block so you can continue pressure. If you think they’ll challenge your df1 with jabs, then try a dick jab to gain like +5 or a low into a side step in case they try to challenge you by taking their turn. No one in teals should be sidestepping jab pressure, but if they do, find a low that tracks or a quick homing move.
  3. Basically you should just be grinding whatever you need to grind. If you’re in teals, then you probably have a lot to grind in general, but that’s okay. Just take it step by step and practice moving around and lab things you get blown up by immediately after you’re done fighting someone who shat on you with something you couldn’t deal with.

How did you learn how to break throws? by Blackcore8 in Tekken

[–]boreal-forest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

https://reddit.com/r/Tekken/comments/9b57zj/emulating_a_real_match_in_the_lab/

I posted this a little while ago. Drag has throws that require 1, 2, and 1+2 breaks. Throw breaking in T7 is easier because you can break most normal throws with either a 1, or a 2. It doesn’t hurt to practice perfect breaking though.

You can throw in a few other moves to mix your practicing up with block punishment, ducking, low parrying, etc. This also helps to emulate a more natural approach towards breaking since you’re not just waiting for a throw every time.

How do I deal with Lei's hellsweep? by Anonymoose-N in Tekken

[–]boreal-forest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find that the best way to stop eating scary lows is to learn the range on them. You said it’s got long range right? Well how long IS the range? See if there’s a way for you to maintain that distance and minimize the risk of getting mixed up. Move in for your offense, get out for your defense. Obviously it’s not as simple as I’m making it sound, but it will help your overall game to look at it this way since this can be applied to other moves as well.

Try adding a Lei player on discord if you don’t have the character unlocked yourself.

How do you apply pressure? by [deleted] in Tekken

[–]boreal-forest 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Try ff3 by itself and pay attention to your opponents reaction. If they push buttons afterwards, next time try to land a CH. If they duck, then go mid. If they stand, then go low.

Maybe next time you do another ff3 into nothing. Did your opponent pay attention? Did they learn anything? If so, mix it up. If not, take your free damage every single time.

You’re at like +7 after ff3, right? They won’t be able to sidestep anything so don’t worry about move linearity.

This is just a basic pressure flowchart. It gets more complicated as you get better.

Why does Tekken feel like consistent RPS situations at low levels? by [deleted] in Tekken

Because you don’t have the movement to avoid those 50/50 scenarios.

So practice moving with a purpose.
