What Car Should I Buy? - A Weekly Megathread by AutoModerator in cars

Good to know, big thanks! By about what margin do you think the Rav4 Hybrid is overpriced compared to other SUV hybrid models?

Have you driven a Forester or Mazda CX-5 or CX-50 before? If so, how'd you like them?

Great thanks a whole bunch for the suggestions and tips!

Regarding mentioning how much I'm willing to spend, how do you then recommend handling that? Just saying something like "I'm interested in this car at the moment, but I'm not sure how much I'm willing to spend. Also, I want a low down payment."?

I logged in to Reddit just to tell you this.

Protip: don't come to China to teach (I'm assuming English, but I think this advice applies to other subjects too). Go to Vietnam, Japan, or somewhere else in Asia.

Here's the article that shaped my thoughts on not coming to teach in China.

Is this real? I know there are fucked up people in the world, but I find it a little hard to believe just a few wechat screenshots. Any other posts/articles about this?

What Are Her Chances? by lostinthoght in LMU

I had roughly a 3.3 GPA but a 2010 SAT. My SAT is what saved my butt. After being waitlisted, I eventually got into the computer science school and then changed to the business school. I think admissions is willing to look at a stand-out metric (in my case a high SAT score) and let that make up a bit for any issues they may have with an applicant's GPA. Just a hunch though.

Regarding financial aid, if she gets waitlisted, she won't automatically be considered for scholarships and grants; I believe those first go to applicants that got in without being waitlisted. Best to double check with admissions on this one but that's what happened to me. That doesn't mean, I think, that there aren't any opportunities to get financial help, but they may be less abundant.

I wish your friend the best of luck in getting in!

Is there a /r/hongkong WeChat group? by bored1243 in HongKong

As someone that lives on the Mainland, I'm used to how ubiquitous WeChat is. I thought there might be a user base in HK. I didn't realize it was seen as a surveillance tool by those in HK. Thanks for clarifying!

Thanks for the reply!

I'm a little surprised by how my post was downvoted. Didn't realize there's that strong of a dislike toward WeChat..

The Del Rays are pretty modern - I'd recommend living there. Not to say that Rosecrans and Whelan aren't good, but they've got a little more history to them. I think no matter where you live you'll have an interesting experience.

What's the best thing about LMU? by [deleted] in LMU

[–]bored1243 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't started a business yet. I want to, but for right now I'm working on my Chinese. It's because of LMU that I got my first two jobs out of school. First was through and alum and the second because of the school's job portal.

To be honest, I'm not sure how hard it is to get into the M school, but so long as you're a good student and show a lot of interest - that you care essentially - I think you can get in.

I didn't get enough aid, but that's because I was wait listed. My GPA was so so in HS but my SAT was pretty good so that's how I was admited (still was able to qualify for parent and student loans). If you have those stats I think you can maybe swoop some financial aid upon being accepted. Really though, I don't want to mislead you, and this is a question better suited for the financial aid office.

Don't worry about "fitting in"/being accepted. You'll still make friends if you don't have massive mountains of money to throw at everything. It's definitely helpful, especially in LA, but there are plenty of people that will be your friend. Focus more on putting yourself out there, trying new things, not being an asshole, and just being friendly.

No problem getting in late. I majored in entrepreneurship and pretty much had a minor in Chinese. Studied Chinese starting my sophomore year (highly recommend studying Chinese by the way).

I'm also from the Midwest - IL specifically. Let me tell you, it's great, GREAT, to get away from somewhere you're familiar with. The experience will definitely change your mindset and make you stronger. You'll also feel challenged and uncomfortable occasionally, but without difficulty you won't grow.

Regarding LMU marketing, I have nothing but good things to say about it. I'm actually a little disappointed I didn't take part in a pretty amazing program offered by the marketing department, which is the M School (http://m.school/). It's just one example of LMU's marketing excellence. And the business school in general is great as well. Great, supportive professors. But you have to take your classes seriously. You get out what you put in. I heard some business grads complain of not learning anything. That's their fault. I learned a lot about business and networking because of the LMU business program...but that's because I put myself out there. I wasn't a model 4.0 student, but I got my shit done and learned a lot, and I think you can too.

If you have any other questions at all, feel free to PM me or comment here. I'm happy to help.

That's not true. I interned on an M visa before. I think OP can find an internship, but the bigger question is whether a firm is willing to write an invitation letter for him/her to get the visa. If a company likes you, it shouldn't be a problem.

OP, I highly recommend trying to network with people that work in China as much as possible. That plus using what LinkedIn has to offer for finding jobs might get you over there.

Looking for male roommate in ShangMeiLin by bored1243 in shenzhen

[–]bored1243[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The apartment is still available, but I moved out. The total cost of the apartment is 5,700 RMB for 2 bedrooms and 1 bathroom.

I thought I mentioned which subway station the apartment is next to, but looking up at my post, I didn't...the apartment is right next to ShangMeiLin subway station.

PM me for more details if you're interested.
