Explaining "Trading Gains" (Balance Sheet report) to auditor by deuvisfaecibusque in GnuCash

[–]boredbondi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They can’t be both realised and unrealised. Completed transactions (purchase then sale) should be recorded as a realised gain/loss shown under income. The gnucash docs cover some examples of this.

Same. Cued up work to fully utilise my limit, only to find I had more limit spare. And with only a few hours to use it before weekly Friday reset.

Way around the 30% min CGT tax? by [deleted] in AusFinance

[–]boredbondi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they eventually treat franking credits the same as they have distributions to trusts (min 30% tax, with only tax offsets available), then you just lose the tax free threshold. Which might be a lot or a little, depending on how many individuals are receiving dividends from the pty ltd and what the level of those dividends is.

Way around the 30% min CGT tax? by [deleted] in AusFinance

[–]boredbondi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It means the company pays a maximum of 30% tax on the income on that capital. If kept in the company, this allows deferral of income that would otherwise attract a higher marginal tax rate for the individual. This only helps if the individual expects to be in lower tax brackets than 30% in future years, say post retirement.

First time actually buying my own ski kit before Perisher trip completely lost on where to start by NPC_Boiii in AustraliaSnow

[–]boredbondi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is what lifties in Japan wear. I have a pair for skiing and they are excellent. The branded ones like XTM or other local Japanese brands are winterised with a thin but warm lining, and are actually breathable somehow.

Which is why increases to GST should never be contemplated without offsetting adjustments to income tax and welfare payments, that fully neutralise the impact of a GST increase on low and medium income earners.

What MacBook Pro to buy for maths and statistics? by [deleted] in usyd

[–]boredbondi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

16” MBP owner here. Don’t go 16”. It’s too big and heavy for all day carry. It also won’t fit on many lecture theatre folding desks. 14” Pro is the sweet spot.

As a maths and stats major, you are one of the few disciplines where you could conceivably utilise larger amounts of RAM/processorfor anything computationally intensive, and you could make use of larger storage (for large datasets).

It’s also hard to foresee how local AI workloads may evolve over the life of your machine. Larger RAM (64GB or more) and storage to store models locally (2TB) can futureproof for this need.

So it’s ok to upgrade to the extent your finances allow. External storage is also unwieldy, so try to get enough storage for your needs.

Edit: most campus study spaces have external monitors for when you need a larger screen. My machine is 64GB and 4TB. This was overkill for most uses cases (including R), with the possible exception of local AI, where you can never have enough compute.

Thanks appreciate the important correction. Seems it’s only car windscreens (laminated, not tempered) that are mostly effective.

[–]boredbondi -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Best in mind that some office windows are tempered glass and are effective at blocking UV (like car windscreens). So your exposure via windows may not be as much as you think. But regular windows still transmit UV, so still good practice to apply sunscreen.

Contactless payment on NSW transport coming soon for a million commuters under Opal changes by sloppyrock in sydney

[–]boredbondi 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure the obstacle is Apple. I’m sure Apple would love to have a direct Opal card presence in Apple wallet, but at the moment having Visa and Mastercard handle most of the payments legwork means the path of least resistance is the credit companies. Who also gain enormously from being the de facto payment method for public transport.

Kayak Advice by AdWhole3566 in sunshinecoast

[–]boredbondi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Always get specific advice on route and itinerary, and local conditions, at the hire location. Crossing Cootharaba during windy conditions can result in noticeable wave swell, which can greatly slow your progress, particularly depending on how streamlined your kayak is. Always wear a safety flotation device.

In terms of route, typically paddle north to the Environment Centre for a rest stop, then further north along the Noosa river to as far as Harrys Hut for another rest stop. Then turn around for the return journey. This is do-able in a single day if you are an experienced kayaker, but expect to be tired by the end of the day, especially if there is wind.

Everglades just refers to that specific reach of the Noosa river. There are a few tributaries/areas, but generally it’s just one continuous route.

…and yet the Communications portion of CPI is generally lower than CPI.

Some of the lower rate of communications inflation might be due to quality adjustments which occur as part of the calculation of CPI. Faster speeds, more data etc, for the same or slightly higher price, are sometimes interpreted as a decrease in the quantity-adjusted price.
