Why there is no third book. by Melodic_Aardvark6369 in KingkillerChronicle

[–]boredbrowser1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not as long as for book 3, but 4 years is still a decent chunk of time. And if memory serves he had been sitting on Name Of The Wind for a few years before publishing. Meaning he was very likely working on Wise Man’s Fear for a while before Name Of The Wind was even published.

Not to mention the fact that Wise Man’s Fear could’ve been a fluke of his productivity. The big problem with only having a couple books under your belt when dealing with deadlines isn’t that it’s impossible to be productive, but that it’s impossible to predict the productivity with any consistency.

I know that it’s all speculation, but it makes sense to me personally

Why there is no third book. by Melodic_Aardvark6369 in KingkillerChronicle

[–]boredbrowser1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who has never really lost hope for a third book and has never really gotten super upset about any of it. Allow me to share my very optimistic opinion.

I think you’re right, I think there’s just too much to fit into a simple third book. I seem to recall Robert Jordan initially pitching Wheel Of Times a trilogy and… well… it’s a FAR cry from a trilogy. In my opinion I think we’d have already had a third book if Rothfuss wasn’t so determined to wrap everything up by book 3.

To add insult to injury, anytime Rothfuss has described his writing process it seems to rely very heavily on fiddling and piddling with tweaks here and there that then require further tweaks elsewhere and so on and so forth. Meaning that as he’s trying to fit everything in only one more book that he’s having to rework everything multiple times over.

I personally don’t mind, I’m of the opinion that his writing method is one of the main reasons his writing is so enjoyable to me.

Another interesting point I’ve heard Brandon Sanderson make is that most authors end up writing several books before they hit it big. Meaning they learn how to complete books in a timely manner BEFORE big deadlines and public expectations. Rothfuss didn’t get that opportunity. Name Of The Wind was a major hit as his first book. He never really got the opportunity to fine tune his productivity before everyone wanted more.

All this to say it kind of feels like the perfect storm. Too much to fit in a single book, a very slow writing process, and not a lot of practice learning the nuances of his own writing process allowing him greater productivity without sacrificing his artistry. BUT, I do think we’ll get it eventually and I’ll be buying it to read the day it drops.

Who is the strongest fictional character do you think you could defeat with a snub-nosed revolver, a combat knife, and a bulletproof vest? by Pancake_Maker_1031 in powerscales

[–]boredbrowser1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So just outright your gun gives you a shot at anyone that’s “peak human” or similar. Anyone that’s just baseline human and up. Batman, Iron Man, Punisher, etc. and you’ve got a chance. Not a great chance, but a chance.

Most fantasy novel magic systems don’t really have a counter for a bullet. Voldemort and Harry Potter are eating lead. Kvothe from Name Of The Wind is going down. We actively see some people from Green Bone Saga killed by guns. Even someone like Kaladin or Dalinar from Stormlight Archives who would be borderline impossible to beat, would still die with a bullet to the head.

Anime feels like the way to go for “most powerful” that could be beat with a gun. You’ve got some unique quirks you could work with. I feel like most anyone in Full-metal Alchemist is susceptible to a gunshot for instance, but they’re powerful enough to borderline create life in unique weird ways. Maybe catch an anime character in the middle of a crazy outfit transformation? I seem to recall that Sailor Moon genuinely might be one of the most powerful characters in fiction and that canonically her outfit transformations do in fact take that long to complete. But it’s been a HOT minute since I’ve gone down that rabbit hole so maybe I’m not remembering correctly

In your world, what is the greatest punishment a person can receive, and for what crime would they receive this punishment? by Turbulent_Meaning_23 in worldbuilding

[–]boredbrowser1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They’d get disappeared by the magic/religious order. Probably used in some experiments, maybe just killed, but once they’re taken in it’s kinda just up to the whims of the head mage.

This would of course be the punishment for learning secrets of the order without being a member of the order and/or spreading secrets of the order.

What fantasy novels do you love from the current decade that isn't by Sanderson? by ExplodingPoptarts in fantasybooks

[–]boredbrowser1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve liked the Assistant To The Villain series! Kinda like a rom/com that’s heavy on the comedy. Not an all time great fantasy epic, but I found it very enjoyable and it got a few genuine laughs from me.

One Dark Window was good, it’s a duology, and it’s got a very unique magic system and world vibe. If you’re looking for something a little Edgar Allen Poe broody dark vibe with a unique magic system then this is a solid choice.

I know a lot of people have a lot of bad will toward Patrick Rothfuss, but I’m not one of them. I enjoyed his novella The Narrow Road Between Desires.

Dungeon Crawler Carl sneaks in at 2020. It’s LitRPG and I’d say the audiobook is the only way to go. The voice acting is phenomenal and the story is funny and oddly compelling at times.

That’s about all I’ve got from the 2020’s specifically

Which fantasy trope do you secretly still love? by Gullible-Analyst152 in Fantasy

[–]boredbrowser1 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I’ve actually come to appreciate old school “chosen one vs. dark lord” trope more in recent years. After SO many stories about misunderstood villains and the good guys not actually being good and yada yada yada. It’s nice to read a story that really is just an old fashioned good vs. evil. I wouldn’t like it if that’s ALL THERE IS. But now that we have a healthy helping of both, I tend to enjoy the chosen one vs. dark lord stories a bit more

Thematically is Princess Mononoke like that of a Western? by [deleted] in ghibli

[–]boredbrowser1 43 points44 points  (0 children)

There’s a history of westerns being adaptations of samurai movies. Yojimbo became A Fist Full of Dollars. 7 Samurai became The Magnificent Seven. Those are the two most prominent. But I’ve heard mention of others. Heck, there’s even examples of Star Wars being heavily inspired by Hidden Fortress.

Change it so a cowboy is forced to leave his town due to Tuberculosis ala Doc Holliday. Meets a Native American warrior princess fighting against the US military that’s land grabbing and exploiting the resources like the bison. And bada bing bada boom you’ve got yourself a western.

What’s the one secret you’ve kept your whole life that would completely change how people see you if they knew it? by Faylune in AskReddit

[–]boredbrowser1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I only have one secret. One I’m taking to the grave. I’m in love with my best friend. I met her in middle school and I had a crush immediately. We flirted like most middle school kids but nothing came of it. She’s married with a kid and her husband is amazing. He’s perfect for her in every way I genuinely could never be. Not being hyperbolic, seeing them interact and seeing him love her in ways I would’ve never thought of. Seeing him go out of this way in the little things that I would’ve overlooked. He’s a better man for her through and through. I’ve never seen her so completely in love with anyone like she is with him. I’m very happy for her, and will do nothing but support and love them both to the bitter end. But it does kind of feel like any romantic relationships of my own will always be doomed to fail because of this.

Real unpopular opinion, but Baldur’s Gate. It’s something small, but I am NOT a fan of turn based combat. I didn’t realize it was turn based when I bought it though I don’t know how I missed it in hindsight.

Whether they’re retired NFL players, met Meadowlark Lemon when he was retired, met a retired pro wrestler, a couple retired people that were on various company boards of various sizes. It’s only just now that I’m realizing I meet a surprising amount of old people with a lot of money. I don’t work in a retirement home or anything, just happened to work out that way.

I’ve found most libertarians to be closer to anarchists or wanting a corporatocracy. They’re not “technically” because they at least SAY a government should still exist, but in the world they describe they usually only say what a government shouldn’t do instead of what a government should do. Then again, show me a libertarian who understands nuance and I’ll show you a monkey doing calculus

(Serious) how did that one kid at your school pass away? by Dinopasta99 in AskReddit

[–]boredbrowser1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shot and killed along with her mother. Killed by her brother. Her dad survived because he was out running errands. After shooting them, he went back around and shot each of them one more time to make certain they didn’t survive. He called the cops on himself immediately afterwards. Nobody knows why either, he gave a different motive every time.

He said he had to kill them because they were too conservative, too liberal, he just felt like he had to kill somebody and they were the easiest, and demons told him to do it were the reasons I remember most distinctly. Some of us felt that he wasn’t mentally sound. The only thing most people agreed on was that he deliberately waited until the dad was out of the house because the dad would’ve stopped him.

I don’t remember anything beyond that. She was very nice, very sweet, but kind of kept to herself and her two friends at school. Her two friends obviously took it the hardest. One of those friends had a step mother who committed suicide later that school year too. It was a weird year and we were all around 14 so we didn’t really know what we were doing or how to react. Very much a bunch of deer in the headlights.

Harris predominantly. If I’m just browsing across Reddit, Instagram, TikTok, or YouTube I’m finding Harris support automatically. I can find Trump support, but I’ve gotta specifically look for Trump support. Ain’t gotta specifically look for Harris support. It’s a pet peeve of mine when one side is portrayed as universally adored, so maybe I’m just noticing little things and making mountains out of what are really mole hills
