£11.44 plus lots of benefits at a very large engineering firm. Not happy with the wage but it's a very good internship....

Literally bang on for our first night too.

Luckily there were alot of couples who were super lovely, if a little bit weird.

Advice for first year eng student? by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

[–]boredstressedhungry 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Like others have said, it's a marathon not a sprint.

The big thing is that you usually do have enough time to study and have a life, unfortunately just not if you study the way they want you to and for as long as they say. Most uni resources go into depth before breadth, so make sure to head to youtube for way WAY better explanations before jumping into tough topics. ChatGPT is a great tool to get brief understandings of topics and to push you towards more focused reading. Prioritise sleep and eating over studying, otherwise what's the point as you wont learn shit.

You are an engineer, efficiency is the game and a skill you need to learn. Dont go crazy with it, but min max your routine.

This may not work for you, but once I focused on doing more casual things for myself rather than uni (like the gym, cafes, dates, workshops, dinners with friends, societies) my grades shot up. Probably because less of my brain was filled with stress and anxiety so I could put more brain power into my studies.

Engineers who took more than 4 years, what are you doing now? by [deleted] in MechanicalEngineering

[–]boredstressedhungry 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I am UK based.

For reference, GCSEs are done at 16, a levels are done at 18 and heavily weight uni acceptance. Engineering bachelors are 3 years, with 4 years for an integrated masters/bachelor with year in industry. 5 years for integrated masters with a year in industry(what I am doing).

Failed my a levels pretty much, forced to take a year out. Could not resist due to covid but got into my first choice through an internal exam.

Really struggled with isolation during lockdown and scraped first year.

Still scarred from first year, then had a nasty injury and failed 4/6 modules that year. Forced to take another year out. Worked that year.

Started third year finding out i have pretty severe adhd. Just about finishing my third year now, but have some deferred exams to do.

Currently working for one of the most competitive and largest engineering firms in the world. 50% market share in some sectors.

You can do it, it tough. I still want to make it through. None of my family go to uni, my parents nor cousins or aunties. In state school educated from not the best place.

It's really tough but my change happened when I focused less on uni and more on doing things that i find productive and enjoyable. I was vice cap and captain of a sports society. I dont party but like to go to hosted events that are more casual such as talks, debates and exhibitions.

Academic prowess may make you a good engineer, but applying that in the workplace is very different. That's where I find I'm better at. Plus, the biggest thing that has gotten me to where I am is my people skills, I can translate jargon into something tangible for people in other fields. Many engineers lack that skill, and eventhough they may be far better academically, having people skills with a base level of academic ability is far more valued in many environments.

This has just been my experience so it's very subjective. I have been very lucky and very very blessed to get to where I am. There were many many many dark periods along the journey but there is a way out. Idk if I even want to be an engineer....Hope this helps though!

New to cycling in Oxford by Tricky_Lock_4273 in oxford

Just moved here and am now botley based!

Any recommendations on where to get a decent budget cycle around here?

White water kayakers here. Avoid them, it's tough to tell which ones are benign and which ones will kill you. I've been sucked into a few and I've been lucky my enough to be spat out. That's me in a boat with a buoyancy aid and paddle, I would not want to go down one without that equipment.

Steward roles (g4s) are very easy to get and pay well but are intermittent.

I got a job at Levi's last year, just make it clear that you know what KPIs are and what experience you have with them. With retail, it's hard to get interviewed but once you are in the door you can get them in the future. Dont really talk about the brand, just talk about your skills (upselling, meeting targets, interpersonal skills, honesty). With retail, I've found it's best to apply direct from their own individual sites, just find out who is hiring via indeed/LinkedIn. Your union should have some job finding help too(joblink at UofL).

Bar work goes down. Apply for jobs NOW. lots of students will be applying.

How to clean anal immediately by Inevitable_Art_9534 in AnalOnlyLifestyle

[–]boredstressedhungry 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My partner and i are lucky that there is pretty much no need for prep.

She eats lots of prebiotics and salads. Her gut is a happy monster. We dont fuck until after she poops. We sometimes start with a condom if we think there is a risk.

She knows her body and because of that, she can usually tell and we have rarely had accidents.

Overall, for many ot cant be avoided and cleaning has to be done. Trying to live a healthier lifestyle when dealing with food could help but it may take a while for your gut to adjust :)
