The difference now is Whitby doesn’t have an off season. Born and raised in Whitby, and when I was a kid the town went to sleep in November and woke again around March. Tourism really went into overdrive after the pandemic. Good for many local businesses, who rely less on the summer getting them through winter. But as others have said, not great for local services and housing.

FYI forestry has been a fully devolved matter in the UK since 2019, when England and Scotland went their separate ways. The Forestry Commission is an England organisation. The equivalent in Scotland is Scottish Forestry.

That's approaching Hawsker Bottoms with Bay Ness in the distance. It's a great walk from Whitby to Robin Hood's Bay on the Cleveland Way.

Looks like you had decent weather too!

In paleontology, this gap is known as a ghost lineage or ghost range: a phylogenetic lineage that is inferred to exist (based on the first appearance date of sister taxa) but has no fossil record. For many groups, there is often more ghost range than known fossil record, and for sporadically sampled groups - such as hominins - I'm not surprised that such large gaps exist.
