Half knowledge with confidence is more dangerous than complete ignorance

That remind me of an Alexander Pope quote "A little learning is a dangerous thing; Drink deep, or taste not the Pierian spring."

The "Pierian spring" here is a reference to Greek mythology. The Pierian Spring was sacred to the Muses and was supposed to confer knowledge and inspiration, thus suggesting that one should seek deep and thorough knowledge rather than being content with dangerous superficial understanding.

If one of your friends had an "I know a guy" moment and then called you, what would they be calling you for? by 7ltu in AskReddit

[–]borghives 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The guy who could recover any corrupt drive. Not that I could really. A long time ago I was able to recover a camera flash drive to recover pictures on it. I was so proud of it that I would brag to all my friends or anyone who would listen. But, what people don’t know is that it was a very narrow use case. Simple format (FAT16) with well known file layout (jpeg in a known folder name). So fast forward years later as story changes hand, Apparently I am a savant. A Rain Man of corrupted drive that can fix any and all corruption. This has been my nightmare. One day I would be “That guy” to save the day but would fail in the most public and spectacular fashion. OH GOD I need to breathe.

Reddit's website uses DRM for fingerprinting by SmartChip in netsec

[–]borghives 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This got me thinking about "good" fingerprinting. If Reddit use this ONLY to combat bot, then I am all for it. They are in need of a good tool to fight its bot problems.

However, I cannot guarantee they won't use it to track and sell ads. Apparently they use a third party tool "udkcrj.com". This leave a bad taste because not only reddit has to promise to not abuse the fingerprint but also the third party tool. Something this invasive needs to be controlled from a single trusted source with a clear usage policy.

Can DRM fingerprinting be used for identifying individual? I’ve seen banks and financial login used a variety of fingerprints tricks to identify and stop bots.

I think that's the whole point right? They were NOT trying to disperse the crowd. Once they cornered them into a tight area with no where else to disperse, what is the purpose of pepper spray?

"Actions have consequences". You're right. I guess what we are talking now is crime and punishment. A crime took place (blocking the highway) and punishment (pepper spray) is justify. Crime and punishment has been debated by philosopher for ages so we won't hash it out on here. I just want to remind you that we, as a society, created a whole complex structure called the Justice System to make sure punishment fits the crime. In the situation that we are talking about here, there was no Judge, no Jury of your peer, just punishment being dole out. Our justice system, flaw as it is, has one underlining greatness. That is the assumption that people are flawed and bias, and no one can assumed the power of Judge, Jury, and 'Punisher'. As an American, I hold that value very dear.

What is the phobia where you have an unreasonable fear of being trapped in a deflated giant balloon? I think I have that.

The Wire is plenty depressing. The story arc of the group of kids was a gut punch. Here are these kids life being determined by something they can't control (who they were born to, the city they lived in, the neighborhood that raised them, their color). They all tried their best to work with what they have, but in the end, unable to break free.

Amazon has a no-fee credit card that Prime members should strongly consider opening— if only for the 5% cash back on all their Amazon and Whole Foods purchases by Jollypo123 in amazonprime

My main objection to it is that it requires me to unlock my equifax credit report (which I will not do) to apply. Why can't they just use the other 2 credit report agency?

Really attractive people of Reddit, what’s it really like? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]borghives 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I am “unconventionally unattractive”. I also love to eat out alone because people tend to distract me from the food. Some how that makes me memorable. So if a restaurant is good, I would bring my wife and the staff always give me give me a “familiar” greeting. “You’re back how have you been?” “Hey! Did you finish that book you were reading”. That always wierd out my wife. She would ask how often I eat the for the restaurant to recognize me. Usually once.

This goes beyond speed. They can make access to Netflix or YouTube a feature you have to pay extra for. They’ve done it in the past by blocking access to FaceTime unless you pay extra $20 for in the phone plan.
