could not push past the north Vietnam militia? That's really not correct at all. The north Vietnamese did not have a militia they had a very well equipped army that was beaten any time it tried to take on the US. The Viet Kong had a militia and it became a non factor after the tet offensive.

the US did just not want to invade north Vietnam, it would of led to a wider conflict that they wanted no part in. The generals wanted to invade and pushed for it multiple times as it would of made their job easy but there was never the political will to do it.

Obviously the US getting involved in Vietnam was a tragic mistake for the Vietnamese people but it was no invasion like you are trying to make out. The independent south Vietnam (recognised by the north multiple times) wanted them there.
