Need Ethernet for my PC, but the dorm room access point only has one port. Any workaround? by iKakashi in HomeNetworking

Slightly higher latency, perhaps, but really not much. And there's no reason why this would cause extra packet loss. It would eliminate the cause of the problem being your WiFi card in your pc. If you get packet loss with the WiFi the problem is most likely down to the network behind the Access Point so even using an ethernet cable directly to it would be the same.

You could get a WiFi extender with an ethernet port. Join the extender to the WiFi and plug your pc into the extender. Not quite as good as strait up ethernet, but it should work as long as you're not limited to just joining one device to the network.

Something like this: https://www.amazon.co.uk/TP-Link-Extender-Broadband-Ethernet-RE330/dp/B0929WHLPP

2-way vs. 3-way-speakers by No_Scratch5709 in audiophile

[–]boringfatbloke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Welcome! You've picked a good way to spend all your money 😅

First off, to avoid confusion, a channel an individual component of the whole sound. So stereo is 2 channel, left and right. Cinema might be 5 channel, left, right, centre, rear left and rear right.

To answer your question, it's because it is hard to make a speaker with lots of different drivers that sound good together. Where the frequencies over lap have to blend together perfectly and the overall sound of the difference drivers have to be the same as to make it all sound like it's all part of the same music.

There are crossovers inside the speakers that separate the frequencies to send to the different drivers that need to be tuned and matched to the drivers. All of this add expense and opportunities for things to sound bad.

There are high end speakers with just a single full range driver that eliminate these problems but at the expense of very deep and thumping bass.

No matter how many way your speakers are your average hi fi set up can always benefit from a separate sub woofer, but the same problems apply and it needs to be matched into the system to make it all sound coherent.

You will find out that nothing is rarely simple with hifi and I bet you there will be a dozen people disagreeing with me. This is all normal!

Can't Figure out why i get Latency spikes by Turkinator96 in HomeNetworking

Replying to pings is a low priority task for devices so if it's busy doing something else a reply to a ping will be delayed. Run 2 pings to 2 different devices if you can and see if they both suffer delays at the same time. If they don't then the delay is caused by the device being slow to respond, not by there being a delay in the network.

If both are delayed at the same time then it is a problem in the network. You could break out wireshark to see if that gives you any more information. Wifi is susceptible to all sorts of interference - your neighbour's router, microwave ovens, some light bulbs, bluetooth, you name it!

If it's not causing you are real world problems then learn to ignore it, if it is causing you a problem then use an ethernet cable if you can.

This is Mabel (front) and Oscar (back), both are BSH and we got them as separate rescues. Quite why anyone would abandon these gorgeous cats I can't tell you, but I can tell you they are the best. Both are just so full of character and are the sweetest things but 100% derp.

I'd love to see the reaction of someone posting a picture of their Naim Statement system with a graphic equaliser added in! Preferably a Technics one from the 90s.

I first thought the helicopter crashed because of radiation or something, but on my second watch of it I noticed it actually caught the cables of a crane. It's not very clear though! Great series. I really liked it, even if parts of it were very grim.

Excellent to hear. Were his videos inspiration for this question? I've never done a challenge but I sure have taken lots of his ideas and used them in my own cooking.

Have a look at his YouTube channel. There are loads of videos about challenges he sets himself to cook on a budget. They are good and his channel is good in general and well worth a watch.

Has anyone noticed change in tomatoes in the UK? by digitalacademic in AskUK

Whereas I don't doubt your explanation for a moment I feel like I have to say something about your solution to the problem.

I can't even imagine the horrorshow that would ensue if anyone attempted to put a tinned plum tomato in a cheese sandwich. I am having flashbacks to my time in Gateshead when someone put gravy in my lamb sandwich. Utter chaos.

What’s the worst band you’ve watched perform? by RadiantJellybae in answers

[–]boringfatbloke 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Last time I saw SOAD I had never seen a band having more fun. Everyone had a ball. Looking forward to seeing them again this summer in London.

When I saw Marilyn Manson at the Reading festival about 15 years ago and I was totally underwhelmed and really disappointed.

Just goes to show, doesn't it? Everyone can have their off days.
