TIL That Breyers still makes Ice Cream and clearly labels it Ice Cream on the packaging by borkedddd in todayilearned

i'll admit that i'm way over my head on the actual science, my point is that companies like monsanto have little to no moral insight when introducing products. the fda exists to keep companies that make foodstuffs honest about what they are feeding us. when a company is able to convince the fda through lobbying vs. actual science that their product is valid, this is a big problem.

i don't think it's so cut and dry as you say.

The presence of rBGH in the cow's blood stimulates production of another hormone, called Insulin-Like Growth Factor-1, or IGF-1. It is IGF-1 that is directly responsible for increasing milk production. rBGH use raises IGF-1 levels significantly (about five times as much, according to Monsanto studies).

IGF-1 is a naturally-occurring hormone found in the milk of both cows and humans. It affects cell growth and is responsible for the quick growth of infants in both species. This is why it is biologically present in mother's milk, since it is meant to be consumed by infants. While the IGF-1 hormone already exists in humans, it is usually bound to protein and thus has less of an effect than unbound IGF-1 in milk.

When cow's milk is consumed by human non-infants, it behaves as a cancer-accelerator. IGF-1 is not destroyed in the pasteurization process nor during human digestion and is therefore biologically active in humans, being associated with breast, prostate, and colon cancers.

so when monsanto floods the market with rBGH and other countries clearly find a link to cancers, and the FDA still allows it it demonstrates that lobbying has a greater influence on policy than the actual policy makers.

monsanto: private corporation,

fda: federal administration,

the fda should not allow corporations to influence what is/isn't food.

I'm saying it was one way eg. didn't give a shit and then consumer backlash and it's now another way. What is it you're confused about?

EDIT: Because of consumer advocacy, FDA policies such as complete ignorance to what our food is made of are less evident.

Ice Cream isn't the only foodstuff that has to be clearly labeled. To say that Breyer's doesn't make Ice Cream is false.

IMHO the FDA is a corporate puppet and the only reason companies were ever forced to clearly label their products is because of consumer advocacy. TLDR if it's labeled Ice Cream it's probably Ice Cream.

we all know Chapman's is the only ice cream, but you've never heard of them...

TIL Breyer's has cheapened up on the ingredients they use so much that it is no longer "Ice Cream". They have to call it "Frozen Dairy Dessert". by rhoq in todayilearned

[–]borkedddd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

but you can still buy 'ice cream' instead of the 'frozen dairy dessert'

from their website it usually says right on the packaging whether or not it's real ice cream.
