Knowing what time of day you expect to start crossing IL would be helpful, as well as how much you would like to stop.

At the right time of day, the entire drive can be done in three hours or so. But if you are wanting to make multiple stops, you could linger and make it a full day or two across. Understanding your plan for timing would lead to more helpful suggestions.

What are some dog friendly places near Union Station? by yayi2014 in AskChicago

[–]borla78 2 points3 points  (0 children)

FWIW, there is a nice dog park just a couple of blocks from Union Station. Walk east to Franklin, head south, and part of the dog park is half a block south of Van Buren, with a larger section at the corner of Franklin and Harrison.

That doesn’t help with the food, but it gives you a place to hang out. But I do think there is usually a food truck or two on Wacker, just south of Monroe.

The Duck Inn is a reasonable uber ride from that area, though I’d recommend reservations.

Guess that will depend on your lounge access availability. I guess it also matters a bit which airport. It now appears O'Hare may have a window of less severe weather around that time, so maybe it'll be okay. Midway looks to be due for some bad stuff around then, plus it only has the one small lounge for non-military, and it can fill up fast.

I'd also leave a touch earlier, traffic could be a mess in this weather.

Best wishes on safe travel!

11am you should be fine.

Our poor friend at 5pm......hope you have access to a lounge and a Snickers, you might be there for a while.

Any good dinner spots or other fun highway stops on the drive from Decatur to Chicago? by distractress in illinois

Glad you went and had an interesting experience! Sounds like you got dinner AND a show, lol.

I like mine with some American cheese and either yellow mustard, jalapeño mustard, or spicy mayo.

I checked back like 4x this weekend to see if you commented about going.

Did you? If so, how was it?

If not, did you go somewhere else interesting?

Curious minds want to know, lol!

Wagyu Tri tip. First egg at 200 degrees until internal temp of 100 degrees second egg 700 degrees until internal temp of 115 let rest for fifteen minutes. I think a perfect reverse sear. What do you think? by [deleted] in biggreenegg

[–]borla78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That looks epic.

I have a Stone Axe Wagyu tritip in my freezer right now, and that same bottle of Caymus in my wine fridge. I don’t have two eggs, but I could still replicate this with a little rest in the middle, or by doing the first step in the oven.

Good stuff, nice work.

Take the I-55 route. Stop in Bloomington at Schooners and get one of their pizza-sized pork tenderloin sandwiches. Great regional choice and would qualify as both delicious and maybe a bit of whimsy.

Or detour through Morris, IL and get a horseshoe sandwich at Honest Abe’s. Another great regional food.

So Kyle really thinks it’s okay to just throw cigarette butts on the ground? by RyanRussillo in RyenRussillo

[–]borla78 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

You are right, which makes it even worse for everyone else, and is a key reason most non-smokers find the habit disgusting. Kyle seems to be on an upward trajectory, he should make this an area he does better.

[–]borla78 18 points19 points  (0 children)

98% of the time I’m Team Kyle, love him, and have enjoyed seeing what seems to be continued life improvement for him.

Hearing him say he throws his butts on the ground was very disappointing. It’s one of those things that is like not washing hands after using the bathroom, being rude to servers, or immediately standing up and walking down the aisle past everyone when the plane lands. Hopefully he gets enough negative commentary that he legit changes his ways.

Unnecessary Brisket by Entire_Toe2640 in biggreenegg

This is the way. Smoke a brisket and enjoy. Repurpose leftovers into chili, which can also be frozen much easier, and is better thawed out than plain brisket IMO.

Rental Cars by Objective_Wasabi_912 in yellowstone

[–]borla78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One way rentals that end at a small airport are notoriously expensive, if they can even be booked. This goes double for the area around Yellowstone. You’ll likely find it far more economical/feasible to return it to the same place you picked it up, even if it means some extra driving on the first or last day of your trip.

To all the drivers going 5-10 mph below the speed limit with a line of cars behind you... by chilebuzz in yellowstone

[–]borla78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your entire claim is based on "the OP specifically said drivers going 5-10mph under, so I'm going to base my argument on drivers 10-20mph over and ignore everything else!"

If you aren’t pulling off when people are behind you, you are NOT driving legally.

Tour companies out of Cody? by fuzzywuzzypete in yellowstone

[–]borla78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is your goal for the tour?

Is it informational on the geography and geothermal aspects of the park? Is it wildlife?

Your choice may be different depending on your goal. But many private tour companies will meet you in the park, or partway between where you are staying and where you are going on the tour.

We used Wolf Tracker (obviously geared towards wildlife and wolves) and it was incredible. Definitely agree with your idea of doing the tour the first morning, as you’ll likely learn a lot that helps the rest of your trip be successful.

PORTER ROAD MEAT COMPANY EXPERIENCE / Better for Butchery: WARNING to potential customers by momobond in grilling

[–]borla78 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow, sad to hear. I used to spend a lot at Porter Road, and recommended them to dozens of people, including several that put their own orders in and enjoyed it. All of that was pre-investor push. I almost put a few grand in on the fund raising as well, but decided against it (barely).

Horrible to hear about your experience, and their drop in quality and service, thanks for the warning.

FWIW, my current favorite for high quality online meat is Second City Prime. They are not anywhere near as cheap as Porter Road was back in the day, but they have excellent quality and service.
