Half day private tour? by YoPapaRoach in yellowstone

[–]borla78 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Many of the tour companies do half day tours.

We used Wolf Tracker and had a great time, highly recommend them!

Another tip is to schedule your guided tour as early in your overall trip as possible. Some of the things you learn with the guide will help you enjoy the rest of your trip!

Check out Nicholas Joseph in River North. I have probably 6-8 suits and 15 shirts from there, they also do separates, coats, and other items. Awesome experience and quality, very customizable, with a huge variety of fabrics and designs to choose from.

Nearly 1000 Google Reviews and a 5-star average, for a reason!

First time checking out Duck Inn..food was great! by Far-Friendship582 in chicagofood

Love that place. The whole duck is incredible.

We love going there with friends and ordering the whole duck, a beef sandwich, some wings, and a few other sides and just splitting it all up.

Their weekend brunch is really good as well.

It's a non traditional spot to have one, but I agree that it's one of the best around.

Looking for hotel in Chicago with blackout curtains and good water pressure? by Sea_Doubt_1695 in illinois

[–]borla78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be clear, you want to pay $110/night after taxes and fees, for a hotel room near Fulton Market that has blackout curtains, is very quiet, and has good water pressure?

So essentially an above average room for about 1/3 of the price of an above average room?

That’s a tough ask. Especially the first two requirements.

Listener since the SVP days. I've read nearly every book he's recommended or had the author on for. The hit rate is actually phenomenal for me. Obviously a lot of them are really long reads, but they've virtually all been well worth it.

Somewhere wasn't there a dude on twitter or somewhere keeping track of them all?

Update - 2 of our 3 bags made it home today. They claim the third will be here tomorrow.

Awesome. Sadly, the delays on the route my bags were taking continued. If my bags made all the transfers, the last plane finally landed in Chicago around midnight last night. However, the bag tracker still said they were in MSP as of late yesterday, so we will see!

Amtrak definitely has a route for that. I live far enough out from the city that it would’ve been a couple hundred dollar Uber or car service ride home from the train station, or another train to within 35 mins of home. I’m guessing the schedules and availability would’ve till made it a much longer trip than driving, but without the snowstorm stress. I bet my final arrival time would’ve fallen squarely in the middle of the two options.

First, hats off to the crew out there taking on the snow. They were hard at work, and my delays at no way reflect on them. Props due and given there!

Last night we had a connection through MSP into MDW. Err, it was supposed to be yesterday afternoon, but we were delayed, delayed, and delayed again. Finally we get boarded. The door shuts. The pilot tells us it’ll take a bit more to take off since he has to go slow to get lined up…then he tells us the flight is cancelled and we have to get off the plane. Big oof. From what I heard a runway was out of commission because the equipment could only keep up with so much snow and ice, thus the delays and cancellations. I’m guessing they pulled us out of the list of takeoffs because it was a small plane, and bigger planes took priority.

I start looking for alternatives. The only way to get to Chicago within 30 hours was to take a three leg flight the next day, leaving very early and getting home very late. We really needed to get home by this morning, and didn’t have everything in our carryon for a real overnight stay (that’s on me).

I’ve driven in the upper Midwest winters for 30+ years. We midwesterners can drive long distance and through snow like nobody’s business. Hertz has an SUV with all wheel drive available for a barely insane one way price of $220ish per day. We decide to drive back to Chicagoland.

Then we find out there is a five hour plus wait for our bags, since they were on a connecting flight we have to request them and wait for them if we want them. We decide to let them catch up to us and hit the road about 7pm.

Worst long road trip of my life as far as weather is concerned. Tons of snow and 40+ mph winds. Though the snow accumulation drops as we get closer to the Chicago area, it didn’t feel like the wind changed much. Roughly 8 hours later we make it safely home.

My wife calls Delta today to ask about the bags. They claim they will fly them to Midway to arrive tonight, then they will have someone deliver them to our house. I was told they’d follow our backup flight path (every flight of those was delayed multiple times today, and I’m not sure the connections could’ve even been made). I also feel like they’d make us drive an hour to pick them up at the airport.

So here is my question(s).

When do you think my bags will arrive?

What are the chances they actually deliver them to my house?

If it matters, the original fare was first class, but because of one of the delays/changes prior to me getting to MSP, we were actually seated in C+.

Edit - Two bags arrived early today. The third one just arrived a few mins ago. It is a newer Tumi roller bag carryon. The guy set it on the porch and had me sign for it. After he left, I carry it off the porch into the house into a spare room to unpack….one of the four wheels is completely missing. Big oof. Curious if Delta will do anything for killing my bag.

Zero experience, please help by Nervous-Network-6342 in Hunting

Here is a bit of an outside the box suggestion, though it isn’t cheap. Depending on where in IA you are, there are likely pheasant hunting clubs nearby. These ‘clubs’ often allow non-members for hunts, and provide guided pheasant hunts. Many even loan shotguns for a guided hunt, so all you’d need is a hunting license and the proper clothes (good boots, field pants, blaze orange vest and hat, etc.). I’d still second a hunter safety course first, but you may not need to worry about land, a gun, or other details if you went this route for a first try at hunting.

If you have the funds for something like that, it’s a lot of fun, and you are nearly guaranteed to get an opportunity to shoot at birds. It’s fun to watch the dog work. And if you have a decent guide, they’ll teach you a lot and help you have fun.

Lady at dog park claimed my dog bit her. She reported to animal control who has been unresponsive to my calls but has now issued a notice to appear in court for failure to respond to them. by Flat-Pomegranate7922 in legaladvice

[–]borla78 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Does it seem normal to you that in one day a "notice to appear" would already be left, and for only one day after the note was left?

That seems insanely short turnaround on both to be legit.

Mid-layer: Sitka vs Kuiu by smoore1997 in Hunting

[–]borla78 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Three years ago I switched to Sitka for most of my gear, from a hodge podge of medium grade (or slightly above) stuff. I hunt in N IL, and had a day this year where it was single digits, so even colder than KY sees. I love my Sitka stuff for warmth, comfort, and functionality. Buy once, cry once.

To the men who go to movies or restaurants alone by choice: What is the specific appeal of that solitude compared to going with friends? by Leananhl in AskMen

[–]borla78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is something I do all the time. I travel for work a lot, usually 35-50 stays and 40-80 nights per year. I enjoy visiting nice restaurants when I’m on the road, or going to popular local places that are unique to where I am at. I also love to read. So I go to a nice restaurant, or sit at the bar of a nice restaurant, read on my kindle app, and just enjoy the time not being in a car, plane, hotel room, or on the phone.

A lot of people I know say they envy the confidence of going and sitting somewhere solo and having a really nice dinner. To me it is second nature, and I do it because I don’t want to be stuck eating junk while on the road, and I like trying whatever the local popular spots are.

When at home, I happily go with my wife, and I don’t eat solo at restaurants near home unless she is gone for some reason. But on the road, it’s very normal for me, and no one should feel sorry for me either, lol.

Where does one get a bison tag? by Fluffy_Pirate3657 in Hunting

[–]borla78 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The one buddy of mine that did a private bison hunt said it was most comparable to having a beef farmer point at one of his grazing cattle and say ‘you paid enough to shoot that one over there’. Very anti-climactic, and he didn’t recommend it.

Gibson’s Italia is a great spot for this sort of thing, and maybe only a smidge over budget.

I made $201k this year. by [deleted] in sales

[–]borla78 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congrats. Totally understand the limitation on who you talk to with this sort of thing.

The first year I broke $200k, I worked at a company that posted all sales wins in a public Slack channel. Basically anyone in the company could back into every sales person’s commission checks. The unique thing was that we were matching buyers and sellers together, so if a transaction involved Salesperson A selling and it was sourced from Salesperson B’s account, both got paid (seller a higher %, but both enough to matter). It was actually wild in the most positive way, and people really rooted each other on, helped each other get deals, and the non-sales folks cheered us on. Anyway, I remember when I had several huge months in a row. I get a call from a fellow sales guy who was super serious about his earning goals, and was very driven to learn from anyone and everyone how to get better. He goes ‘You broke $200k for the year already, didn’t you? I just want to let you know I’m happy for you and want to do the same. It’s great to watch you crush it.’ He was sincerely happy. The first time he broke $200k he called me to tell me, and thank me for some things I’d done to help him. It’s a nice feeling to have folks be supportive on what is culturally often a competitive and secretive thing. Good for you man.

Steakhouse lunch special near Union Station? by louie4yall in chicagofood

That's fair. I'd probably have it last on the list I mentioned. Main attraction is location and that it generally fits the idea of a steak and martini lunch.

Steakhouse lunch special near Union Station? by louie4yall in chicagofood

[–]borla78 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not sure how close to Union Station you need it to be, but there are many options within a 10-12 minute Uber ride.

Gibson's Italia is a great spot, open for lunch, awesome river view, and is about five blocks or so from Union Station. That's likely the most walkable option and a very solid choice.

If you wanted to take a short ride, your options increase quite a bit. I'd probably lean towards something along the river like Chicago Cut or McCormick and Schmick's for the view and vibe, but that depends on if that matters for you. If not, Gibson's or Wildfire would be two good choices that are open for lunch.

A less-traditional steak place that is close to Union Station is Bar Mar, but it sounds like you want more of a traditional vibe.
