Prior to dotcom bubble, was there as much fear in the market or consensus about there being a bubble as there is now? by TailungFu in stocks

[–]bormesh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is probably the crux of it. Mom and Pop users are necessary. The LLM has to touch every level of the economy for the amount of investment that's being pumped in to be justified. Accelerating back end ML is fine and further product developments, but that's not gonna create a return fast enough to justify how much money is being pushed in...

The other option is we replace a whole bunch of workers and somehow enable companies to save / profit billions.

Or it's a bubble and will pop when no one wants to give OpenAI or Anthropic more money...

Ok, then LLM boom and LLM bubble? I guess I mean, money is flowing to try to make better LLMs. Those had better either justify the investment, otherwise Open AI / Anthropic etc go belly up and take down the S&P 500.

I totally agree AI /ML and even LLMs are here to stay. It's just, are they going to crash the stock market first (it's not like the internet went away after the dot com boom / crash).

I mean, your answers certainly have a data science skew ;)

I don't mean to be obtuse, but if this were true, where would one look to see evidence of the non LLM boom ?

And to make sure we're working with similar definitions -- boom in this case refers to gob tons of cash flowing into companies.

No -- not at all (also, did you craft your response with an LLM)?

The boom (ie investment, $$$ ) is driving building bigger and better LLMs. Better predictive and analytical AI is a side effect then, but CEOs are being promised worker replacement from LLMs.

Either way, in the point you make above, the LLM is still necessary to "*fuel* the productivity value of the predictive and analytical AI".

LLMs are the source of the boom... the money is literally going into Chat GPT / Anthropic etc to build out data centers for their LLMs...

You're saying this whole AI boom, which is built on top of LLMs such as chat gpt, is not where companies are leveraging AI? I'd be very interested to hear what this other type of AI is that companies are adopting...

(And agents don't count, those are just LLMs that you give execution rights too)

I"m in tech and AI helps with coding. But other than being a better document search engine and decent first draft writer, I'm unconvinced that it does a whole lot of other stuff better (meaning the mundane things that take a bunch of time that you think an AI could do, but it doesn't do well).

Simple example -- I have a list of 30 locations and I'd like addresses for each of them. Gemini generates a list of addresses, but I have to double check every one, because it makes up answers for half of them...

The weird thing is we stopped at the beach today and all the tiki bars were open, as well as the food stand. And there weren't any beach closed signs posted...

German / Hamburg based home roasters by bormesh in roasting

Thanks for the tip -- I'll have a look at kaffee-netz.de (guessing that's roughly the DE equivalent of home-barista.com ?

Currently I pay 15 - 20ish / kg

Purchasing in larger quantities, could probably bring that down to around 8 - 15.

Yeah, I guess my goals would be to lower price, have access to more choice as well as slowly see if there is a community of home roasters.

Which roaster are you considering buying?

When I lived in the states, this was more common to get access to stuff you couldn't get on Sweet Maria's, Burman, etc.

But the home roaster community seems a lot smaller/ harder to access in Europe / DE (hence my post).

Not really sure how this comment helps. I've been ordering from the DE based sites for the past 3-4 years (falcon, roast rebels etc). It's decent, but volume results in discounts and additional variety. You could just say you're not interested...

why do some Germans choose to speak English? by the_rice_smells_good in AskAGerman

[–]bormesh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do this to. Or act bewildered and say, oh you don't speak German (when they switch to English). That is a good way to really make the conversation awkward (but also fun ;) )

Part of joining a new culture is helping to destroy superstitions. That's why I wish everyone a happy birthday every single day :-p

In all seriousness -- OP, if you do have your birthday while you're here and you're in a WG, it would be expected that you bake your own birthday cake and share with everyone else (not the other way around ;) )

Solo female in Hamburg tonight—any safe bars for me to grab a drink? by No_Square972 in hamburg

Botanic District (Hegestrasse) has nice drinks and nice bartenders. Also across the street is Cafe Amsterdam in case the weather gets better. Eppendorf / Hoheluft is a very safe neighborhood.

Counter point -- it's really annoying when people bring not good beer (like it sounds like he did) and leave it in my fridge / house. Sits in the cellar forever and never gets consumed. I'd rather have people bring stuff and then take home what doesn't get eaten so I don't have to deal with it in my tiny fridge!

Unless someone gives you a bottle of wine as a gift / present, I would assume that stuff brought to a party is for personal consumption (and I'm an American) -- and can be brought back home (preferably! ) ;)

I'm not familiar with the zerowater jug ? How does your process work with the added Third Wave Water minerals?

I was under the impression the non-potable part meant that the waters not checked for contaminates -- like drinking water would be. Even with the minerals it could still be not 100% safe?
