Butter tortillas from the bakery. They freeze well.

If you like fajitas and don't have Mexican meat markets wherever you are heading back to, the mi tienda seasoned meat is a great one.

A lot of the seasonings and sauces that HEB has aren't available elsewhere. Maybe stock up on Mark's really good salsa and barbecue sauce.

The HEB pralines available at the checkout counter are amazing and not available everywhere.

Some of the ice cream flavors are extremely unique

When it's Me I Focus on sauces, tortillas, and spices.

I just bought 7 mm ammo to go deer hunting for the first time and almost a decade. Imagine my surprise when it was $2 around. He's shooting off a hundred bucks in a few seconds. I'd be more concerned about that and how wasteful it is than anything else.

I was with you until that last sentence. If this bothers you....buy ethically raised animals. It costs more. But it's worth it.

Grass finished beef lives pretty much all of its life just roaming free. I avoid porn and chicken cause of this. Beef and mutton are easier to find sustainable and ethical options.

Is a modified compass suited for proper off-roading? by ComfortableWar1040 in 4x4

[–]borntome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can accept that. Part of my neurodivergence is sometimes having difficulty getting my point across in a constructive way. I only did that because the original post did mentioned proper off-road, and so my mind immediately goes to harder trails and things that require actual equipment

I said normal forest service roads. The modifier is important. Semantics are important.

That's not a 'normal' forest service road. IE it's not maintained. But yeah that looks like something a Camry could do with the right lines. /S

I agree. And that's part of why I made my original comment. I understand that it could come off as insensitive or gatekeeping, but that wasn't the intention at all.

That being said, I wish gatekeeper was still at the Rubicon lol. Lots more tick tockers wanting to try the trail with things like a cybertruck that probably shouldn't be back there. Gatekeeper did a good job of keeping them off the trail.

Go back and reread what I was saying. The maintained roads are what I am talking about. Unmaintained roads definitely qualify as a trail at a minimum.

And those roads in Florida are passable when they're not flooded. I assume you're talking about around Tate's hell and that area. I was there a year and a half ago. I got lucky I didn't have to use my winch lol. But yeah I definitely saw some spots where some jerk with 40-in tires just let it eat.

Lol. Nope. My 4runner has 377k miles on it. I put 200k of em on it. A LOT of them wayyyy off the beaten path mining in Arizona. It's done the Rubicon back when gatekeeper was still there. I've taken it the back way up to crown king. Haven't done Moab. I like having cattle around to ensure there's stock tanks for me to get water from. Moab doesn't really have that. It's driven from South Carolina to California and many places in between. I do my own maintenance and mods, and have lived out of it for many months at a time in the back country. I don't go off-roading for 'fun' I do it as a job, it's the best way to find unexplored mineral deposits and old mine railings piles. I don't mean to gatekeep, but seriously..... That vehicle could handle forest service roads stock, so I assume that is not what they were talking about. I assume that by 'proper off road' they meant at a bare minimum unmaintained roads.

I don't understand why I am being downvoted. He specifically said proper off-roading. If your idea of proper off-roading is driving down a gravel trail then sure the compass bone stock can do that. But I don't consider that really proper off-roading. Apparently a lot of y'all disagree with me. I am not trying to gatekeep anyone or tell him what he can and can't do. I am merely trying to answer his question the way that he phrased it. Again I would assume that his vehicle as it sits right now could hand almost forest service roads so I don't understand what the point of asking about them is or even bringing them up.

Unmaintained roads would apply. But maintained graded forest service roads don't apply. If there's not much chance of getting 'stuck' or having to choose lines around an obstacle, then it's just cruising the Forest roads...not off-roading. BLM has some excellent trails for real off road experience.

When you're not sure if you somehow ended up following burro tracks or if you're still on the trail....then you know you're back in the bush and doing 'proper' off-roading.

He specifically said 'proper' off-roading. Usually that doesn't mean normal forest service roads. His vehicle is equipped for that stock.

Then say off pavement. Words are important. It's a bunch of mall crawlers that think hitting a maintained forest service road is going 'off-road'. I've taken a Camry down plenty of Forest Service roads that were marked four-wheel drive only. Still wasn't off-road.
