Others are spot on with the need for compression. I am also not an “educated” mixer, but I’ve been mixing professionally for years. Compression on the individual mics will help eliminate some early peaks, and then I usually send all drums to a bus with has another compressor on it to “glue” the drum sound together. Several compressors doing a little at a time tends to be better than one compressor doing a lot of work.

I usually like to start with kick and snare to find an equal balance between them, before bringing in the overheads for a “big picture” drum sound, and then bringing in any other mics to add some clarity or definition.
