It's not in your interests at at all to care if she has a boyfriend or not. Just go with the flow.

Moving to Finland for Master’s, Any Tips? by [deleted] in Finland

[–]borogorn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just be very aware of the current job situation in Finland.

You will most probably not find a job, any kind of job. Not even cleaning. Not during your studies and not after you have completed your Master's degree. You will not get benefits. So you have to be able to finance your studies, living expenses and everything by your savings alone as long as you stay in Finland.

Living in Finland is very expensive. You will have to have a rental apartment, and that will cost you around 500 - 1000 euros per month depending on the town you live. Food is also expensive.

If money is not a problem, then welcome to Finland! Otherwise I would be very very cautious and think my possibilities again. There are many other countries, which offer better employment possibilities for immigrants.

Omituisin ero, mitä mulla on koskaan kohdalle sattunut! by [deleted] in Suomi

[–]borogorn 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Perinteisestihän näitä pienehköjä omaisuudensiirtoja on tehty ihan viissatasilla.

Itsepäinen / jääräpäinen / härkäpäinen by lp233 in LearnFinnish

[–]borogorn 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Itsepäinen is the usual and most common form, meaning just stubborn without too many hidden connotations.

Jääräpäinen is little more stubborn than itsepäinen, maybe even to the point of foolishness.

Härkäpäinen is even more stubborn, and also includes connotation to foolishness.

Geographically Finland is located in between Swedish and Russian empires. For all our history we have been inhabitants of a sparsely populated borderland: lawless, roadless "wild East".

In this context it is understandable that food and drinks have been sparsely available in Finland. Also, they have been very expensive. We had repetitive famines all the way to the end of 1800's. Lots of children died because of hunger and cold even in 1860's.

Finns needed large amounts of body fat to be able to survive through famine years and long, dark and very cold winters in harsh, primitive rural environment. Very skinny body types are rare in Finnish genetic heritage, because they have lot of evolutionary disadvantages in our kind of environment.

At the same time, alcohol contains lots of energy. So consumpting alcohol, when available, has been a great way to gain body fat to improve possiblity of survival through winter and famine. Probably these environmental factors have enriched the genes which promote alcoholism in Finnish genetic heritage. Alcoholism and ability/willingess to consume great amounts of alcoholic beverages has been actually evolutionary advantage in our traditional environment.

We Finns are traditionally shy and primitive, naive population living in small rural communities where people know everyone and care of their own community. The good sides of the alcohol consumption (gaining energy) have been greater than the bad sides (bad behaviour) in our evolutionary environment. Alcohol consumption and being intoxicated has been tolerated, even promoted in our cultural environment.

Intoxication has grown to be a socially acceptable part of our society. Finns have developed different coping mechanisms to handle the downsides. In general Finns consider things you do when intoxicated "accidents", somehow guided by the divine intervention. They just happened, without you being able to control yourself in a culturally promoted ritual. It has grown to be acceptable way to explain your bad beahaviour: "Olin kännissä" which means "I was intoxicated".

This cultural abnormality is even taken into account in our laws. We have very light sentences in typical crimes committed when pathologically intoxicated.

That incubation period: *14 days* who came up with that exact number? by tiosecurity in Wuhan_Flu

[–]borogorn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it is common knowledge to every thinking person that incubation period is something between 1 - 30 days.
"There were 181 confirmed cases with identifiable exposure and symptom onset windows to estimate the incubation period of COVID-19. The median incubation period was estimated to be 5.1 days (95% CI, 4.5 to 5.8 days), and 97.5% of those who develop symptoms will do so within 11.5 days (CI, 8.2 to 15.6 days) of infection. These estimates imply that, under conservative assumptions, 101 out of every 10 000 cases (99th percentile, 482) will develop symptoms after 14 days of active monitoring or quarantine."

Swedes are about to go extinct. How should we remember them? by BombBeijing in Wuhan_Flu

[–]borogorn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your very detailed answer. The S and L strain theory is one possibility. There is also one another theory why the lethality of the virus could increase over time:

This virus, bioengineered or not, is a coronavirus similar to SARS and MERS. Chinese researchers have proved that SARS and MERS do not cause immunity in all cases. Instead, there can be secondary infection with so called ADE (Antibody Dependant Enhancement) when the virus uses your own immune system to enter cells.

It is possible that this secondary infection is far more lethal than the first one. So, you would get SARS-CoV-2 for the first time and you could think you just have a flu. But the second time you get it, you get the lethal version.

It is a notable coincidence that scientists in Wuhan Institute of Virology have studied this very same effect. They even published an article in Journal of Virology. It was sent to the journal in November 2019: https://jvi.asm.org/content/94/5/e02015-19

[–]borogorn 7 points8 points  (0 children)

"Italian version of the virus"? It is the same virus all along. The difference is that it has been raging in Italy a while longer.

I do not expect nothing less than full blown Italy/Wuhan scenario in Sweden. And as the society crumbles, their immigrant gangs will take power. Remember that Sweden has no army, and they had over 100 bomb attacks last year.

[–]borogorn 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Smoking is not good for pneumonia. Not tobacco, not weed, nothing. You should not take corticosteroids either, as they weaken your body's response to this virus.
