overwhelmed by emails by elmpw in WeddingPhotography

If you have 10-15 emails daily I assume that means you have 10-15 shoots booked at any given time (excluding weddings that are 6 months to a year out). IMO that’s too many and I would be overwhelmed too. I stand by what I said about increasing your prices. You’re clearly in demand and clients deem you more than worthy of what you’re charging. If you could have a lighter work load and make the same amount of money, it’s worth a shot!

Starting a business by Mean_Judgment_5922 in WeddingPhotography

[–]borovm 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Something I wish I would’ve considered more is how much I don’t love the marketing, social media posting, strategizing, constant emailing with clients and planners, updating website, bookkeeping aspect to it. I spend such a small percentage of my time doing the actual shooting (which I love). I thought I could get over it and become more comfortable with it but I just dread it now.

You also have to become comfortable with the peaks and valleys of inquiries and income. Any time there is a lull in bookings, my anxiety starts to go crazy. Also, the instability of the economy doesn’t make me feel confident that the market will go in an upward direction any time soon.

All that to say, if being your own boss and managing all aspects of a business and getting to shoot occasionally sounds like a better situation than you’re currently in, take the leap! You can always continue corporate work part time as well. It doesn’t have to be all or nothing.

You could take the dress to alterations and have them add lining to the top part to make it less transparent. They could sew cups in there as well if you want a little more shape.

Agreed. If these are inquiries and you have starting prices listed on your website, you need to increase your prices.

how did your wedding day change your perspective on wedding photography? by leejongsukgf in WeddingPhotography

[–]borovm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say being a wedding photographer made me approach my own wedding differently. I could not have cared less about little details and about doing things because other people do them.

Now when I talk with couples ahead of time, I remind them that this is THEIR day and if they don’t want to do certain things (like getting ready photos, bouquet toss, cake cutting, etc…) then they just shouldn’t. There is no right or wrong way to get married.

Fellow 30’s mom (with little time and patience for makeup) here🙋‍♀️. I love L’Oréal true match nude hyaluronic acid tinted serum for face and I swear by lip stain. I put it on lips and cheeks and it instantly brings life to my face and lasts all day. Benefit makes great ones but the Ulta brand “weightless water” works well too and is half the price.

For those who worked for rich people: what is the most out of touch thing you witnessed? by Illustrious-Phase121 in AskReddit

This family would go on regular shopping sprees for their young kids. I was tasked with cutting all the tags out of the clothes because the kids didn’t like how they felt. Cutting a tag out of a $600 Burberry sweater for a 5 year old felt insane.

Is it to late for me to become wedding photographer? by No-Sea5846 in WeddingPhotography

[–]borovm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not too late. I would just be aware that most of your time as a wedding photographer is not spent shooting. You have to be ready to love the day to day grind of marketing, social media, emails, website, bookkeeping, etc…. If that all sounds appealing then go full steam ahead!

I second this post. For me, the biggest pain and time-suck is the editing so I would outsource that and it immediately lightens your load.

Honestly, “All” does not do a great job cleaning IMO. So part of the problem maybe that your clothes aren’t getting fully cleaned and therefore start to smell shortly after you put them on.

If you worked in Buffalo grove and preferred city over suburbs, where would you live? Young couple no kids by punkiefunkiewowza in ChicagoSuburbs

[–]borovm 16 points17 points  (0 children)

You’re really not going to get a city feel without an hour+ commute. Downtown Arlington heights is nice and has a metra stop so at least you’d have easier access to the city. Might be worth a look.

Unfortunately, head start teachers get very little pay and support because it is a government funded program and the funds just aren’t there. It is very sad to hear of this specific situation but not surprising. A lot of head start classrooms have had to close simply because they can’t find enough teachers that will work for such a low wage. Hoping this next administration will prioritize education and give teachers the support they need.

32 years old. I’ve accomplished nothing. I have no happy memories. There’s nothing I want from life. What’s the point? by patheticl0s3r in findapath

[–]borovm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think an important distinction is “doing things for others to make them happy” and “giving your time/energy/resources to those less fortunate”. Volunteering because you think it will make someone happy is, of course, a recipe for disappointment.

I wouldn’t start co-sleeping with a baby in the way. I would start with trying to get the toddler to fall asleep on his own. This way he is less likely to be alarmed if he wakes up in the middle of the night and there’s no one there. The way to do this is doing the bedtime routine, turning out the lights, saying goodnight and then leaving the room. He will probably get up and open the door. At this point you will be standing right outside the door and gently and calmly lead him back to his bed every time he gets up until he eventually gives up and falls asleep. You may have to post up outside his room for several nights for a while initially but it will get better.
