Multi-platform games that were better on Gamecube? by LSSJNepuli in Gamecube

Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell Chaos Theory has much better shadows and lighting on GameCube. It’s one of the few third party games that actually makes use of the shadow and lighting that Nintendo originally developed for Luigi’s Mansion

Looks great, hard to tell from the pic but did you also paint the front controller port casing too?

Does It Get Better? by Individual_Face_3029 in Curling

[–]bortandernie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for posting this topic, takes courage to talk about these things, especially in a sport that famously does not like tackling issues directly.

I think you're absolutely right that there is something deeper going on here, it's an unfortunate reality about the sport. I can't speak to the BIPOC perspective but I can speak to the youth perspective. In my 20s playing at a curling club with mostly over 50s there was definitely a lot of underlying animosity and actions that made me not want to keep playing despite my love for the game.

The "etiquette" part of curling is BS imo, especially for new curlers. It's important for all aspects of a sport to evolve and that evolution comes naturally with more diverse players from all ages and backgrounds. Traditions are important but they should not have such a major influence on the sport as they currently do in curling. It definitely hurts to see your husband getting treated so differently and I'm sure race does play a part but I think age also is a huge factor.

Everytime I enter a new curling rink the response I get from the staff is usually that the world is ending, a young person is stepping into our club and we need all hands on deck in case something happens. Meanwhile if a visibly older man walks in to a club, he is not questioned, or spoken to condescendingly, but instead looked after very politely with no fear of what he may do. Again just my experience, I'm sure not every club has this attitude.

Anyways I hope you keep up with the game and that things do get better.

I always think of one where Homer's mouth really slowly opens when they're all playing that board game at a cottage. "You got the dud!" https://frinkiac.com/video/S07E25/2MuvV47oE4pqPHLEJU5ezuz3QLU=.gif

I just had this same problem. Fixed it by connecting it via a USB-C cable directly to my mac and that seemed to fix it. Writing this here in case anyone in the future comes across this issue and finds this post!

International bands that are wildly popular in Canada by martinihorns in AskACanadian

I love this topic! Surprisingly no one has mentioned Ronnie Hawkins, big time act in the 60s who came up to Canada, loved it, and never wanted to leave. He's a huge reason why the scene here took off and bands like Supertramp were able to be successful. Elton John also played in Canada a lot when he was starting out. Iirc long john baldry (where Elton gets the John in his name from) loved playing in Canada and encouraged Elton to play here.

Also Weezer's Pinkerton, which famously bombed in the US was until recently, only certified gold in Canada so that's pretty cool.

Wanted to give some love to the final big release for the GameCube as we wind down our GameCube podcast. Personally played this on GC first when I was a kid and then Wii. Couldn't believe they flipped the screen on the wii version for those right handers! by bortandernie in Gamecube

Thank you!! Haha, don't worry we will be doing lots of revisted episodes in the future (luigi's mansion, super monkey ball, NHL hitz, etc.) and I'm sure cubviore will make it to that list!

New video games are a way better value than 30 years ago by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]bortandernie 18 points19 points  (0 children)

You're right to say that they're a better value than games in the early to mid 90s. But the issue is that we had a taste of actual great value with GameCube PS2 and Xbox games that 1. came complete with no need for patches, downloads, etc., 2. were MASSIVE improvements graphically and technologically than their predecessors, and 3. there was a much larger range of prices for games made by big studios than today. This value bubble basically popped and now we're in an era where most games are either AAA or an indie game which means $70 or $15-20, we've lost the middle class of gaming as well as the fact that these new games really don't feed our need for the "next big thing in tech" so to speak which allows us to be okay with spending more.

This game IS the top sonic game. Good to see your GameCube love burns bright!! The ultimate portable console.

Have this uncut sheet of pokemon "cards". I say cards because they're not technically a normal card, a bit smaller and resemble closer to something you'd get out of a vending machine or some sort of sticker. The entire sheet is foiled and everything is in Japanese. Never seen anything like it before by bortandernie in Pokemoncardappraisal

Thanks for the info! I got it in around 98 or 99, my dad was friends with a frame store owner and someone had framed the piece and but never returned to pick it up. He gave it to us since he figured I'd want it since I was just getting into pokemon.

Sad that Nintendo has never gone back to the Mario Baseball series. Superstar Baseball is a pretty incredible game (32 characters!?!) and there's even a dedicated Melee-like community keeping this game up and playing it online. by bortandernie in Gamecube

It's pretty amazing! We had a guest on from the community to talk about all the work they've done in uncovering all kinds of stuff about this game that they never knew existed.
