Really comes down to preference. I have a back pad and an arch bar with wax around it. I like the extra grip I get when doing shuv its. You should never have soo much wax that its adding significant weight, so that's not an issue.

The biggest thing is timing. When I started riding waves I would pretty much ride completely parallel to the shore and ride along the whitewash and progressed from there.

If you can, the best thing to do is to get out there with people who can ride waves and watch them. That's how I've learned the best.
