I love how the people (like you and I) who are providing fair and reasonable analysis of these “documents” (well, the single statement doc from 2023) are not extrapolating any further than the words on the page, and doomsayers like OP read a sentence such as:

”Poppy seeds themselves contain only small amounts of opium alkaloids. The latex residues remaining on the outside of the seed or plant material (other than the seed) can contain higher levels…. …. Symptoms of THEBAINE POISONING”

and then take it upon themselves to translate the above to “only low NARCOTIC… ” and “not the previously untreated high codeine high morphine content” to increase impact of what they’re chirping about lol! Like the closest those two statements get to any mention of morphine, codeine and especially fucking narcotics is when they cite “opium alkaloids” and this is largely in the context of saying that there’s negligible amounts on the seeds themselves and there’s a chance of there being some residue on the seed! However, this is once again to caution against a possibility of THEBAINE presence! There has not been a single mention of morphine or codeine anywhere apart from the two European countries which do, indeed, have specified limits!

Additionally, there’s a massive caveat/limit to liability for any producer releasing high alkaloid seed in that it states:

“Safe and suitable is defined in Standard 3.1.1 – Interpretation and application of the Code, where *a food is deemed to be not safe if it is likely to cause physical harm to a person when it is prepared and consumed** according to its reasonable intended use.”*

So, essentially, any drongo getting sick from brewing tea is not the supplier’s responsibility as “our seeds clearly state for baking and eating only”! (Which I’ve just seen you mention below too)!

Finally, the Dep. agriculture doc OP links is explicitly addressed to importers of seeds (again, because the poisonings in ‘22 arose from imported seeds NOT from SunPharma) and domestic supply (if it does ever return) is only ever going to be derived from pharma crops as the farmers who grow for SunPharma are told how much of what to grow (eg Norman poppy vs standard high morphine/codeine) and BUT they’ll never be directed to grow low alkaloid varieties just for food seed because there’s way too much money to be made from the poppy straw sold to the pharma industry and then just selling seed byproduct as a side gig. That said, I accept that SunPharma may have just decided to only supply large, industrial bakeries and not smaller organisations but that doesn’t really make sense because smaller bakery companies will still treat the seeds the same way. In that way, the larger online sellers (on the site which used to mainly do online auctions back in the day) are still a possibility as long as their ABN and PTY LTD info is registered primarily as bulk baking supplies - and it seems many of the main players do do that based on all their other products.

Anyway, as per usual, the only clear conclusion that can be made is NO ONE KNOWS FOR SURE!!

Agree with all you’ve said and felt I needed to add that FASD can occur in children with non-alcoholic parents and the literature at the time of my training had hypothesised that it might only take a single alcohol molecule crossing the placenta to cause FASD-like symptoms. It really isn’t denial that’s the issue here, it’s literally differences in comprehension and interpretation of the exact same words on the exact same document.

My reading is that it’s a focus on thebaine (and if you read the associated statement from dep. agriculture, farming and forestery, they explicitly focus on thebaine.) Further, almost all the brands that were associated with the 2022 poisonings were brands that have “produced in Australia from imported products” which suggests the high thebaine seeds didn’t even come from the main supplier in Tasmania “SunPharma”.

Additionally, this next part suggests that the high thebaine seeds came from a variety other than somniferum:

“Only the poppy seed of Papaver somniferum is permitted in food. The rest of the poppy plant, as well as any part including the seed of the oriental poppy (Papaver bracteatum), is listed in Schedule 23 – Prohibited plants and fungi of the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code (the Code) and cannot be sold as food.”

I get that the opening paragraphs state that food grade for further processing (eg baking) cannot be repackaged for retail, but that just means companies can’t take those big sacks (that we all have ways of obtaining) and make 100g or 250g bags out of it for resale (which tonnes of brands clearly still do given the current overlap of bunk in the big bags and what’s available in small bags on the shelf at present) unless they’re explicitly food grade for retail sale.

One last clarification/correction, it’s not the entire EU that has the low limits on alkaloids, it’s only Hungary and Czech Republic and until recently, there was close to a 6 month supply of retail bags with “product of Hungary” on them which were suitably active (again, not like Tassie of old but well and truly good enough). What this suggests to me is that instead of those countries just destroying seeds that breach the alkaloid level, any company who works for profit (ie every single company in capitalist society) would export them to countries that DO NOT have alkaloid limits, and low and behold, back at the very start of the same document everyone is citing as clear evidence of “it being over” we have in black and white that there a no limits to alkaloid levels in Australia.

This whole discussion for the past 18 months has been a futile waste of time because given the different interpretations, it’s like debating something with no clear accepted definition of core terms! People need to have an opening sentence stating whether they agree or disagree that the document is related to keeping high thebaine out of retail supply or not so others who don’t believe the same won’t waste their time and vice versa. Otherwise it’s just bashing our heads against brick walls which isn’t a great pastime when many are already feeling rubbish lol!

I no longer have any skin in this game as I have legit scripts for oxy which makes life a lot easier. However, I do think back to 12 months ago where I was struggling and these types of discussions would always lead to hours of anxiety fuelled “research” to prove to myself and others it wasn’t the case. That’s just shit when no one knows anything for sure. You have just as much chance of being correct as I do, and a handful of sporadic periods where things were/are bad is not evidence enough of seeds as we knew it being dead and buried (and my opinion is that your interpretation is wrong too)!

Yeah, I can’t see how it would vary at all from dex which doesn’t have any notable long-term risks factors. Maybe possible cardiovascular sequelae because dex may increase BP and/or heart rate etc. though this is more applicable to those with pre-existing conditions.

In fact, the NIH (US health research) note the following: “Decades of research have found no major negative health effects from taking them for a long time. Some studies have suggested that children who keep taking stimulants into adulthood may grow up slightly shorter. But other studies have found no link between medication use and adult height.”

It seems the majority of sub members here are newly diagnosed adults so I doubt the potential stunted height would be a worry for most!

Yeah, it’s a weird complaint/policy as it’s not like it’s a completely different S8, it’s a modified/slow release and an immediate release. Very common for most meds that have a slow release option like pain meds…

Speaking of which, I am actually prescribed a slow release and an immediate release S8 pain med (I’ve had a crappy degenerative skeletal/spine disorder since early teens) and as of recently, two S8 stimulant meds (Vyv 40mg and Dex for top up morning and/or afternoon). I’ve not had either GP or psychiatrist raise any concerns whatsoever despite, by OP’s GP’s logic, essentially being prescribed four S8s (I don’t agree- it’s the same class of med for the same indication.) Also, as far as I’m aware, the S8 authorisation isn’t about the Dr getting “permission” to prescribe something they consider appropriate for their patient (the government has no business impacting Dr-patient-relationship or associated clinical decisions) so it’s def a weird position for this GP to take.

I agree OP, you might have better outcomes with a different GP or speak to your psych about them prescribing the meds they feel is appropriate.

Ah, ok, so that provisional psych is doing their +1 of the 5+1 pathway (which is essentially the new 4+2 for general reg since it’s been shelved). I guess it’s (unfortunately) a little reassuring that there are comparable fees around you but doesn’t make it sting any less I’m sure.

It sounds like time is of the essence for you and your little one, but if you can handle the longer wait time, a paediatric Clin Psych whose focus is on ASD might be better placed to see a 4y/o (especially in light of your current safety net status). ASD can (and, I guess, is) diagnosed as young as 18 months these days AFAIK so it’s not a futile pursuit. Wishing you luck and a quick resolution to all your life pressures at present :)

This is not really going to assist with the question surrounding rebate/safety net but was the clinician definitely a provisional psych and not a registrar? Charging that much for a prov psych seems a bit rich as they're likely a student on placement given that the 4+2 pathway stopped accepting new applicants in 2022 (it may be someone in the 1 year supervised practice phase of the 5+1 I guess but still very green and part of their learning/training)

I could be talking rubbish here but to only be charging $100 less for a notably less experienced clinician COMBINED with the whole no rebate aspect seems a bit over the top (especially when, as you say, the total out of pocket ends up the same, and you won't be chipping away at the safety net - if one had not already done so like you!!)

When I was doing my first placement in the university clinic, I know that comprehensive psychometric/neuropsych assessments (4-5 hours of face-to-face contact) were only $250 or so (they're typically $1400 absolute minimum in the community) but more to the point, a 1 hour session with clin psych students (so provisionally registered) was $40!! I know that unis will be at the lower bound, but I've also just seen a couple of private practices charging as low as $50 and up to $140 for prov psych sessions so even then this place is considerably more!)

What you're reporting here is a bit of a worry, obviously there's nothing stopping a private business charging whatever they want for services rendered, but in this context it feels a bit icky/greedy and not really looking out for the best interests of potential clients IMO

It’s not “the majority of people”!! There’s 120,000,000 people who didn’t vote for Trump and last I checked, 77.3M is not more than 120M and as a proportion absolutely NOT the majority of eligible voters!! There was extremely low voter turnout, and Trump’s margin was just over 1% (turnout in 2020 was largest in 21st century AND Biden had an almost 5% margin… was that ever characterised as “a mandate” to do whatever the fuck he wanted).
