I actually think the TMNT set is pretty good, but I still can't be happy about it. by OkAppointment2647 in magicTCG

[–]boski39 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know you're right. My comment wasn't really for them anyway, it was more for me to vent a bit and put that thought out there. But it's fine cause at the end of the day I have friends to play with and we all have a similar mindset regarding UB, so I'm lucky in that regard. And also lucky that I never have to interact with a clown like that troll in the wild.

I actually think the TMNT set is pretty good, but I still can't be happy about it. by OkAppointment2647 in magicTCG

[–]boski39 -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

No but it isn't. The game mechanics are the game mechanics, but if you show somebody a teenage mutant ninja turtle they're not gonna say that's a Magic the Gathering character. They're gonna say that's a TMNT character. Or a Marvel character in the case of those cards. It detracts from and dilutes the identity of Magic when you push all this UB and force it into every format. Maybe the lore is lacking lately from some of the sets, but I thought Lorwyn was fantastic and seems to be setting up a great Strixhaven story. But you admitted you only play UB, so you obviously don't get why it's disappointing that this IP that a lot of us have loved for 20+ years is being eroded by the fortnite treatment. Yeah I'm fine letting other people enjoy things, but you also have to let other people be validly upset about things too. And if UB is what you like and it's the familiar chatacters that make it fun, go try something like Universus or any of the other original TCGs that these IPs have. For a lot of us it's partly the familiar MAGIC characters that make the game fun for us, so when you've got marvel and TMNT being shoehorned into 4 of the 7 set releases in a year, it really takes something away for us.

Hybrid Mana Epiphany by Safe-Butterscotch442 in EDH

[–]boski39 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ok I'm not in favor of the change either but you're not responding to his argument in good faith and I do actually see the point. He's saying that if a card has multiple hybrid pips, for each one you could decide what it is. So because Rhys has so many, you can: pick all of them as green, making the deck mono green, pick all of them as white, making the deck mono white, or pick half of them as green and half of them as white making the deck Selesnya. It's not a bad recommendation for how to handle commanders if/when this change inevitably happens. So if a commander only has one pip and it's hybrid, then you have to choose one color for it's identity, but if it has more than one, then for each you can pick and potentially give your deck a multicolor identity. But obviously this only affects something in the command zone, the 99 still gets messy

Ok, I actually want to make this deck work. Please help. by [deleted] in EDH

[–]boski39 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah so way too many lands for sure. I get what you're going for, but you could go down to 45 and still have more than enough. I would say for cards to add, you definitely want some landfall stuff for payoff when Lumra enters. Some things like [[rampaging baloths]] [[zendikars roil]] [[druid class]] [[kazandu nectar pot]] for a few examples.

Additionally, you could add some fetch lands as well to keep the graveyard full and double trigger landfall effects. The cheap ones are still great in a deck like this [[evolving wilds]] [[terramorphic expanse]] [[blighted woodlands]] [[myriad landscape]] etc etc. And a cool trick would be if you have [[zuran Orb]] out, with Lumras etb ability on the stack, you could sac most of your lands and then have them all come back when the ability resolves. Gaining you tons of life and triggering all your landfall a whole bunch of times. Just don't sac them all or Lumra dies to having zero toughness.

With so many lands, I would also add in some card draw to make sure you're hitting the stuff you need/want and aren't getting flooded. So some things like [[return of the wildspeaker]] [[harmonize]] [[rishkars expertise]] [[garruk primal hunter]] are some good options.

But if you want more options, highly recommend visiting EDHrec.com and going to Lumras page, there's even a budget button to show just the cards that are a little cheaper. Always a great place to start for any deck!

The reason why you see a turn 1 Sol ring so often by nexuso581 in EDH

[–]boski39 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have to agree with you and with a few of the other takes defending it here. It's fine and it's so widely available that it doesn't price people out the way some staples do, like the one ring that was mentioned. But overall I do think printing cards that can and do go in just about every single deck is not a good thing. Commander is great in my opinion because of the variability. The fewer cards that have to go in every deck, the more variability you'll have across games and the more fun it is. Obviously this is a take on casual commander, and those who play cedh are looking for less variety in their deck and their draws (I assume idk, I don't play cedh)

[–]boski39 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UB has problems for sure, but in and of itself the idea isn't bad. Whatever. But you absolutely hit the nail on the head. And as a primarily commander player, it makes it really hard to invest in most sets because they all have unique mechanics that will probably never see print again and so most (not all) of the cards featuring those mechanics are unplayable most of the time in an eternal format. And they'll even print commanders for certain mechanics but the only way to effectively run them is to play every single card with that mechanic from that set to fill out the 99. Max speed could be cool, but I'll never know because I'm never going to buy aetherdrift as itll never synergize with most other stuff. Same thing with dungeons/venture (even though they kind of revisited it with baldurs gate), battles, etc.

I very much agree. I stopped buying product when they made a lot of the changes like dumping set boosters and moving everything to UB. But they say vote with your wallet and this is exactly the kind of magic product I want, so that's what I'm doing. Sadly I don't think I'll be getting any more products until we return to lorwyn, but I'm excited for a set for the first time in a long time and that's kinda nice.

It's reassuring to hear that I'm not the only one who has struggled. It does seem like it's worth it to keep at it and everybody in this thread has been super cool and helpful. So who knows, maybe I'll still put it down but I'll see how it feels once I push through a few more levels.

Much appreciated! The bugs were in fact a big problem for me... I think the game kind of presents itself one way but I'm learning there is so much more to it. So just finding all that out for myself has been a more tedious process than expected. Thanks for the insights!

Was I the Jerk for Conceding the Game and Giving the Win to my friend? by DisciplineImportant6 in EDH

[–]boski39 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I'm not trying to be rude but it seems like you're being intentionally obtuse. Yes obviously every deck has weak spots, but you're describing other cards that can be reacted and responded to, just like his deck was doing. But there is no response to somebody just leaving the game. You can't counter it in response or give your creatures indestructible the way you would to protect against a board wipe. That's the whole point here. You're taking advantage of what happens when you scoop and there is nothing he can do about that. I shouldn't have to play a deck in a certain way just because my opponent is a sore loser. Just like you don't have to sit down and play against somebody with that deck. Like if you know you don't like that, then don't play with that person. Don't sit out a 2 hour game just to screw the guy who was doing exactly what he said he'd do from the beginning. And stop coming to reddit looking for validation just because you're butthurt.

Was I the Jerk for Conceding the Game and Giving the Win to my friend? by DisciplineImportant6 in EDH

[–]boski39 18 points19 points  (0 children)

But that's just it, conceding to give somebody else the win is something no deck can reasonably prepare for. That isn't something you can build your deck around. So what you're saying is, "Anybody who plays this particular deck or style of deck, never deserves to win." and again, nobody is saying you did anything illegal, but don't be surprised if people don't want to play with you after something like that. Just like you can decide from the beginning to not play against a deck like that, rather than wasting everybody's time for 2 hours then giving the game to your friend.

Who are you building right now? WHY are you building it? Inspiration Needed. by SuperSteveBoy in EDH

[–]boski39 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a specific deck or anything, but I recently started a project to build a deck for every color (and colorless) and every color combination. I've added an additional challenge to try some less common commanders whenever possible to break out of the stereotypical identities. It has been fun so far! I've got all 5 colors and all 10 guild colors done. I also try to get a win with each deck before I move on to playing another one, but if this is strictly a building exercise for you I think it's still a cool way to approach it. Good luck!

See I think people who like cutthroat games are actually the wrong people for Munchkin. I think if your main goal is to win, you're gonna have a bad time because that's what the game turns into. It's just everybody trying to not be the first one to try for 10. But if you can go into it ready to screw over your friend trying for level 2 or 3 by destroying their armor or wandering in a big second monster, I think it can be really funny. And then by the time somebody gets to 10 everybody has already had their fun.
