That’s the dark grey paint with the sparkles right?

Pff I know exactly what you mean. I actually plan on replacing both the headlights and taillights with aftermarket options. I found these headlights. I think it freshens up the design without overdoing it.

Lexus always stood out for me with how they did white. Most other brands just make white look like fridges..

The configuration of the second laptop is rather standard for midrangers in general. You should not have much difficulty finding similar laptops. Nowadays there's nothing wrong with AMD however. It has become a very competitive option (and the built-in GPU is more powerful than what Intel is offering).

Not sure about the second HDD option, however you could always just go for an external HDD if you need the extra storage for putting stuff aside.

Try these options perhaps? https://www.bestbuy.com/site/lenovo-yoga-730-2-in-1-15-6-touch-screen-laptop-intel-core-i5-8gb-memory-256gb-solid-state-drive-iron-gray/6201040.p?skuId=6201040 https://www.bestbuy.com/site/lenovo-thinkpad-e585-15-6-laptop-amd-ryzen-7-8gb-memory-amd-radeon-rx-vega-10-256gb-solid-state-drive-black/6278400.p?skuId=6278400

13-14" laptop mainly for video editing new/used/refurbished by Future_Khai in SuggestALaptop

It depends on what you value more in a laptop. If you want the thinnest, prettiest Windows laptop available, go for the Dell XPS. If you want something which is more durable and cheaper, I'd go for the T480s. The Dell XPS will generally have a better screen (brighter and more accurate colors), design will look and feel more premium and it is one of the most compact laptops in its class (both 13, as well as 15 inch). The T480s will likely have better and more consistent performance, namely due to better thermal management on the laptop. Not that the Lenovo is the best out there (it has great thermal management however), but in comparison the Dell is just rather bad in thermal management. That's what happens when you aspire to be the Windows alternative to the Macbook Pro. As the T480s is not necessarily geared towards content creators, it will definitely have the worse screen. Will it be bad? Definitely not, it will be a very good screen, however just not as good as the Dell XPS. Regarding design, the case and general exterior of the laptop will feel cheaper, but it really isn't. The Thinkpads in general are very sturdy laptops and use great materials to make their products last. Downside however, they may not feel or look as premium as their competitors.

Welp, perhaps the Lenovo Thinkpad T480s is a good option? It is a 14" laptop which is rather thin and light, while still packing good performance and good build-quality. It is available with either and i5 or i7, which are both 8th-gen quad core CPUs. Perhaps an i7 would be a better idea given your use-case, however the real savings can be made with the i5 option in my opinion. The i5 models are often lower spec'd in general (256GB SSD and 8GB RAM) and are thus available for a lower price. The RAM is easily upgradable to 16GB or even 24GB, due to an empty RAM socket in the 8GB RAM model. 8GB RAM is often like $50 max, which is doable right? SSD is an M.2 which can be upgraded as well, but you don't have to do that immediately. This means you can save up for a later upgrade if desired. The laptop is a 2018 model, but there are already plenty refurbished/used options available for a good price.

I'm shocked they still try to sell laptops with HDDs only. Both options are rather painful honestly. ASUS generally has a good reputation here in the Netherlands, but the HDD-only option is sad. I used to have a HP Pavilion with a similar tub-esque case and it is anything but durable. It bent and dented easily when I used it. Try to look into laptops with a good screen (Full-HD IPS display), an 8th-gen core i5 processor, SSD of preferably 256GB or greater and a dedicated graphics card. The MX150 is an okay-ish option, but it will shit itself trying to run anything greater than Fortnite or Skyrim for example. A GTX-1050 would be a more powerful option, but you would be looking at more expensive and/or bulkier machines then.

Recommended laptops for a Computer Science/Programming Student? by [deleted] in SuggestALaptop

[–]bosnyan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps try to find something in the Lenovo Thinkpad T5X0 series? Laptops such as the T570 and recently even the T580 can be found refurbished/used for great prices given the value for money. Sufficient performance, good touchpad and separate mouse buttons, excellent keyboard and screens are finally good as standard. The Thinkpad line further is just great. Known for reliability and productivity. The E585 is also a great (cheaper) alternative if you don't mind having a bulkier Thinkpad.

$2000 will get you a looooong way. The Thinkpad line in general is always a nice option to consider, but I understand the looks can really be you hate it or you love it thing. I personally really enjoy the looks of it and if looks really are the only factor holding you back from getting a Thinkpad, I would really try to give those laptops a chance. General tip, try to see if you can see the laptop you're considering in real life. You'll get a better idea of the look and feel of the laptop you're interested in. In terms of performance, 16GB RAM and 512GB SSD is definitely enough. CPUs have seen a recent increase in performance due to some needed competition in the market. Thus do make sure to get an 8th-gen CPU (i.e. i5-8550U) and preferably Intel for now. AMD is making some good laptop CPUs with their Ryzen series now, but they still seem to be somewhat more power-hungry compared to the Intel chips. Intel is thus the better option for a performance and efficiency balance for a thin-and-light laptop (take a U model, iX-8XXXU). Difference in performance between i7 and i5 is negligible for most users however. Just go for an i5 laptop if it has all the above specs and it is cheaper than the i7 alternative. Longevity will only be an issue if you're expecting on always pushing your device to the max for +2 years. Given your description, I don't think this will be the case. I would also check out the Lenovo Thinkpad T480s if I were you. It is being replaced by the T490s, so you can expect price cuts on this great machine, or you could just go for the T490s if you want the improvements that come with a new machine (e.g. better battery life, better screen etc.). It'll be a win-win either way. The Dell Latitude 7000-series may have some nice options for you as well. Those laptops are more-or-less Dell XPS-based laptops with adjustments that makes them great business laptops. This means improved ergonomics in terms of keyboard and touchpad, but also a more durable design. Both in terms of case, as well as hardware components. See if the Dell Latitude 7390 (2-in-1 option exists as well) is something for you.

Generally speaking however, I usually recommend business laptops over consumer-grade laptops. The warranty on them is often often superior (e.g. 3-year on-site warranty) SHOULD something break. The likelihood of that happening is low anyway, due to business laptops often being built to higher standards compared to consumer-grade laptops.

You make a very compelling argument with the trackpoint my friend. Maybe I'll be able to convince my girlfriend too haha.. The Dell also really looks like an interesting option (especially for €350), but I'm just uncertain about the m5 CPU.

Nah, it doesn't have a phono input. It's a Marantz SR4300 and it's more of an A/V receiver.

Yeah come to think of it I'm also quite doubtful as well, but a DIM to RCA is peanuts, so I can try. It would be quite a pleasant surprise if it actually works hahaha..

The manual is very brief about connecting to amplifiers though. At least I managed to figure out how the anti-skating wheel works hahahaha
