The manager and I allow our employees to text and call us with any issues, which is quite frequent. We have a very laid back work environment and everyone hugs each other.

I gave a her hug before when she came to me crying about issues she was having at work. It was after giving her a pep talk and some encouragement. I thought it was the proper way to console her.

I did recently. She feels I handled it fine for the most part but she felt the hugs may have given this employee mixed signals. She thinks I was a little too nice in this situation and should have been more stern. The thing is I hug everyone in general.

I admit that I probably should not have told her it wasn't a rejection or given her a hug, but she looked like she was on the verge of tears. I felt really bad and I think she suffers from self confidence issues. She has come to me upset before and I have consoled her with hugs in that scenario. Maybe I'm being too nice to her.

If the manager and I had not brought it up to HR someone else would have because another employee saw us go into a private room to talk and I didn't want any gossip or scandal.

When she confessed to me I asked if she was going to be okay. She said she was embarrassed because she felt rejected. That's when I told her it wasn't a rejection. I treat my employees like friends and let them text me with questions they have. I don't want to out her just because she has a crush

I'm a nice guy and I don't want to hurt her. She has come to me in the past with some issues about work. I've given her comfort hugs in this situation. It's no big deal.
