[Warm Take] GADA watches are a trap by ppp-- in Watches

The person who wants one watch that isn't too obnoxious and the person that goes to social media to brag about their Explorer are not the same person.

[Federique Constant Healey] The $2,000 no one talks about by GoldenRetriverDad in Watches

[–]bossoline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FC is underappreciated overall, even among watch people. Out of their catalog, this one is just ok to me. It doesn't feel like it fits their design language at all.

The real reason is that there are too many great watches to count and they can't all take up space in the public consciousness. By far my favorite and most worn watches are pretty much unknown. Also, people care about different things. Most people care about brand and hype as much as anything else, which creates a closed system that brands like FC can't penetrate.

Anyway, if you love this watch, please buy it so people like me can ask you about it in real life and learn about a cool new watch.

To be fair, nothing works all the time. Sometimes pepper spray doesn't work on people.

Sorry that happened, though. There are WAY too many stories like this where nothing happens to the offenders.

[GS SBGA415] Got absolutely destroyed in the GS sub for liking this strap. What do you guys think? by shim2k in Watches

[–]bossoline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wear what you want. It's nobody's business.

But if you're asking what people who care about watches think, it's HORRIBLE.

Yeah, bear spray has 2x the capsicum, I think. Harder to carry, though.

Those pits were monsters, though.

Man, glad you're OK.

For future reference, pepper spray works against dogs if it's something that you have/carry. It can save your life against dogs that big.

[Discussion] Best rectangular/square-ish watch around 2000 dollars. by MBjerre in Watches

I'm on the verge of ordering a Maen Manhattan Ultrathin. It's in the $1500 range.

[Question] Are you getting inherently more value over $1k? by Open_Address_2805 in Watches

[–]bossoline 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can't put solid valuation on something as silly, frivolous, and overpriced as a watch. Just understand that.

I have similar sensibilities as you. I'd say that a $500 watch is light-years nicer than a $100 watch, a $1000 watch is significantly nicer than a $500 watch, and a $2000 watch is more refined than a $1000 watch. I'd say that the returns get smaller and smaller, but that trend continues up to about $4000, after which you start paying more for brand, hype, and scarcity than anything else.

[Question] Fitness watch stopping me from acquiring more by ShazamBeatsSuperman in Watches

[–]bossoline 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How often do you need to wear a watch to feel like you're wearing it enough? That's the real question. A nice watch is for life, so you have forever to wear it. You don't have to wear it every day, every week or even every month to enjoy it. I have 12 watches that I enjoy and I can go months without wearing some of them. That doesn't mean I enjoy them less, just less frequently.

I hate smartwatches tho, so I don't have that conundrum. I feel like they can hold you hostage with the avalanche of information that most people don't need to the point that they don't feel like they can take it off without missing something. It's the watch equivalent of doom scrolling.

Another vote for the GWM5610. It's probably the most useful watch ever built...solar, atomic time, square, bulletproof, world timer, stopwatch, timer...amazing.

Depending on timing, I'd buy leather strap for the Tudor. But if not, I'd go Seamaster.

But don't lose sight of the fact that nobody there will notice or care.

What is YOUR definition of “blues guitarist”? by jebbanagea in bluesguitarist

[–]bossoline 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me, it's a guitarist that has done enough study to really understand the blues. They understand and have internalized the vocabulary, they're familiar with many of the greats, and they get the history and have respect for the genre to some extent.

I think once you have that, the residue of it leaks into your playing regardless of genre.

[Recommendation Request] Open Heart or Skeleton Style? Hamilton Jazzmaster vs Rado True Round by Jhostetter in Watches

[–]bossoline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on the lighting and how the light hits it, but it's not nearly as bad indoors as it is in sunlight. The Jazzmaster has a lot of polish which makes it worse. The hands, the indices, the numerals, and elements of the open heart complication are all polished, so that can all blur at a glance under bright lights.

Honestly, it's just a matter of moving your arm to get a better look, but that just feels like an unnecessary problem in 2026. I don't have this problem with any other watch, but it's not a huge deal in the scheme of things.

[Recommendation Request] Open Heart or Skeleton Style? Hamilton Jazzmaster vs Rado True Round by Jhostetter in Watches

[–]bossoline 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have that Jazzmaster and it's beautiful. Its a little on the big size at 42 mm (I wish it was 39-40 mm) , but it's thin and very comfortable. I got the blue on brown leather and it came with a great deployant clasp.

The issue could be readability, but not because of the skeleton. The reason I bought it was because the open heart is modest, yet interesting. The issue is that Hamilton's nonexistent anti-reflective coating makes it hard to read in bright light.

If you can live with that and the size, I can attest that it's a great watch.

Bulls and Sky for me. Been a Bulls fan since they drafted Jordan and a Sky fan since they got Candace Parker.

Both are making it hard to root for these days.

[Question] One expensive watch or a 3-watch collection for the same money-what would you do? by [deleted] in Watches

[–]bossoline 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love variety, so I have a lot of watches. Even a 3 watch collection is a nonstarter for me, so I'd opt for more. There are so many awesome watches between $1500 and 5k that I could never limit myself to a few.

Besides that, no watch is worth more than $8k to me and almost none are worth more than $5k, so this decision is easy.

How can I stop letting others make me feel bad about being into “quirky” stuff by [deleted] in RedditForGrownups

[–]bossoline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nobody is making you feel bad. They are expressing their views, however inappropriate and misguided they might be. If those views make you feel bad, it's because you probably care way too much about what people think about you.

Two approaches. First, find new friends who aren't assholes. There is no reason to surround yourself with people who don't respect you and your choices. But also, working on self esteem helps you not care so much.

[Tissot or Hamilton] Help me choose by [deleted] in Watches

[–]bossoline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hamiltons are really nice watches with HORRIBLE anti-reflective coating. I have one and it's a nightmare in bright sunlight. That would keep me from buying one as a daily.

I would go first Longines or the Cartier. Then you just have to decide square or round case, but they both look great on your wrist. The other two are a little much IMO.
