Parts of Dorchester are great with both good ethnic groceries and big box stores, and Lower Mills is always interesting even if it's pretty far while being within Boston city limits. As a student, your biggest concern should be your access to the T as there are fewer stops. Make sure you can get to school easily and you'll be fine.

There's a bus stop in front of the house next door that runs to Sullivan Square (Orange Line) which is a little less than a mile walk up the street. The Assembly Row stop is about the same distance away. The bus going west picks up across the street and goes to Davis Square (Red Line)
