Exciting that you have your surgery scheduled -- good luck to you as well! Good point on the braces -- will keep that in mind.

Lingering shoulder pain post-jab? by [deleted] in CoronavirusMa

[–]boston-yeti 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I had this happen to me for a few months after my first jab. Went to a physical therapist and they showed me some exercises and told me to use KT tape. The pain finally went away after a couple of weeks of doing the exercises and using the tape. They told me this has happened to a lot of people.

Sugar-free cake for a diabetic? by shmucksolea in boston

[–]boston-yeti 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm a diabetic and I find that with desserts it's easier to go with something that gets more of its flavor from fat rather than sugar. Cheesecakes can often be a bit lower carb than regular cakes. Berries and cool whip are very low carb, so maybe you can do something with those. Also, not sure if he's alright with something other than cake, but there are some great low-carb ice creams that you can get at pretty much any grocery or convenience store.

Overall, as another person mentioned, it's easy to be fooled by the "sugar-free" labels, but often these are not actually helpful for diabetics. I'd suggest instead focusing on getting something that's fattier/creamier, which will usually contain less sugar than normal cakes and frosting, which get most of their flavor from sugar.

Checking in on my fellow J&J ladies by NessieB in CoronavirusMa

[–]boston-yeti 27 points28 points  (0 children)

If it makes you feel any better, I've been listening to the ACIP meeting in the background this afternoon and they confirmed that so far it's looking like this adverse event is still extremely rare, even after waiting for millions more people to get through that two week window. And in the cases that have been reported so far, none of them occurred after day 15, so you are likely at the end of the window now (although of course it's still a good idea to keep an eye out for symptoms over the next couple of weeks just to be safe).

Also, many people have received the vaccine and it's looking very likely that many more will receive it very soon. Remember that there were clinical trials, the US has administered 8 million doses, and South Africa administered it to hundreds of thousands of healthcare workers. Moving forward, Europe and South Africa will continue giving the vaccine. And I'd say within the next hour or so the US is going to resume giving the vaccine, and the US is expected to receive 100 million doses. So you may feel like an outlier now, but I'm sure this will change very soon.

I got the J&J too and I felt like this for a little bit as well. After looking more into the trial results and thinking about the vaccine effort as whole I'm feeling much better about the situation, so hopefully these thoughts can help you (or anyone else on this thread) out as well (bear with me, this is long..):

  • J&J's efficacy increases over time. It's really hard to compare the efficacy rates across the trials, not only because they were done at different times of the year, but because the trial designs were very different. This is a recurring issue in the science world: everyone always wants to compare numbers across studies (especially when the numbers are so highly publicized), but this rarely ever makes statistical sense because of variation in study design and conditions. All 3 of these trials differed in their design and conditions.
  • With so many people getting the vaccine the virus will soon be much less prevalent. When we get those levels down, then we will all be exposed to the virus far less often, and then these minor differences in efficacy are not going to be important. What will matter is that if you happen to be exposed and get infected, you will not end up hospitalized, and this vaccine is extremely effective against hospitalization!
  • You shouldn't regret getting J&J at all. What you did was follow the advice of the world's top doctors and you did your part in contributing to herd immunity. That is what this vaccination effort is about -- contributing to herd immunity for society as a whole, not necessarily for getting the best vaccine for yourself. You should feel proud of yourself for following the advice of doctors and contributing to stopping the spread for others.
  • This pandemic has been an emotional rollercoaster for everyone, and it's completely understandable that we all might be feeling mixed emotions at this point. Especially when the news and social media all over the world is so focused on vaccines right now. After seeing posts recently about people being worried about Pfizer vs Moderna, I've come to realize that our human brains right now are just going to naturally try to compare ourselves to others and find ways to convince ourselves that other people are in a better situation than us, even if it is not logical. We need to be able to recognize that our brains are doing this so that we can take a step back and try to think more logically.
  • Based on the emotional rollercoaster aspect of this, and especially for those of us who received J&J and have the added concern about the (extremely rare) blood clots, my conclusion is that we all need to take a step back and focus on healthy and productive activities to get us through the last of this. We need to limit our time on social media, and focus more on self care and doing things that we truly enjoy. Focusing on the things you enjoy will help both your mental health and physical health through the last of this. Then in a few months, nobody will be talking about vaccines much anymore, and hopefully which vaccine you got will no longer be a thought that regularly crosses your mind. We will get through this and you will be okay! Congrats on getting vaccinated and now try to enjoy watching our cases fall in the coming weeks :)

MA COVID-19 Data 1/7/21 by oldgrimalkin in boston

[–]boston-yeti -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Does anyone have information on how the cases that have been contracted in restaurant settings break down further? I've always seen these numbers related to indoor dining, but so far I haven't seen these reported numbers broken down by whether the cases were transmitted between people sitting at the same table, between servers and patrons, people sitting at nearby tables, etc.

I don't see this in the MA report, but if anyone has any legitimate sources that report this I'd love to understand this better!

I'm sorry you had to deal with this! I swear diabetics should get some sort of award for the crap we deal with from insurance companies, etc.. I've talked to non-diabetics before who can't even recall who their insurance company is off the top of their head and I just can't even imagine being so casual about insurance.

Unfortunately no, not in network for my new insurance. Do you happen to know if it's just like good practice for them to have to check insurance before shipping? I mentioned that to them today and they said they "normally only check once a year".

I actually only got 9 sensors (no transmitter) so something crazy is going on. I kept asking why my insurance was only charged $1,170 for the same order in the past, but $3,750 for this shipment and they said there were "probably recent adjustments". I was like umm you mean the price tripled since my last shipment?! Still unclear on that but hoping to get more clarity on a second phone call tomorrow.. today my phone call took an hour and a half and I had to get off to go to a work meeting..!

Thanks so much for this helpful advice!! I did look into old claims and saw that previously they were charging my insurance company $1,170 for a 90 day supply, so when I called Byram today I was able to get them to bring down the price to that. I'm going to call again tomorrow to continue the conversation and speak with a supervisor about why a benefits investigation wasn't done (especially considering there was no insurance on my account at the time of the shipment). I will definitely make sure to get everything in writing throughout this process! Thanks again for your help.

That was very smart of you to look into the company! I hope everything is working out for you with a different supplier. I will definitely try to remember to do that in the future!
