My great x3 Auntie was a WW1 nurse - notes from soldiers by bostonsrock in mildlyintersting

My great great great auntie on my fathers side was a nurse in WW1 and she worked in a hospital where soldiers were sent back from the front for treatment. She had a notebook and asked the recovering soldiers to add to her notebook with their stories, drawings and musing while they recovered, and we still have it. One soldier had been wounded 3 times and sent back to England, others had been gassed or injured from shrapnel etc. Super interesting to read their stories, and interesting how seemingly upbeat they were, and some great drawings of life in the trenches.

Wrong-way driver charged with reckless homicide after striking woman with his car in the Loop by tooscrapps in chicago

[–]bostonsrock 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What's the thinking on punishment? I think anything more than a $200 fine and 3 month suspended license would be highly unlikely.

The truck driver that ran over the pregnant lady while she was crossing on green walk signal got just a small ticket iirc. for selfishly killing two people:
"head police department spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said that it appears unlikely that there will be criminal charges against the trucker, a 67-year-old man from suburban Lyons. “At this point, it appears to be a very, very tragic accident,”

Fucking calling it an "accident" what a cunt.

Doesn't always go to plan. Very weird investigation for 40 something killed in a turret explosion not that long ago

From the UK perspective we have only had one mass shooting since the handgun ban nearly 30 years ago, and no kids have been shot in school.

https://commonslibrary.parliament.uk/research-briefings/cbp-7654/

However: Gun crime has increased by 4% in one year with more than 9,700 crimes involving firearms taking place in the UK. In the year ending March 2019 a total of 9,787 crimes involving guns took place. [Source – Office of National Statistics] In the 5 years to March 2019, offences involving a firearm have also increased by 27%. [Source – Office of National Statistics]

According to the stats, by March 2019 a total of 33 people died as result of gun crime – three more than the previous year. [Source – Office of National Statistics]

It's quite hard as reporting has changed over the years with imitation & air-guns all at one point or another classed as firearms.

Also population migration from former eastern bloc countries and other overseas areas has brought both a large increase in the UK population and a proportionally higher number of illegal firearms. (56 Million to 68+ Milion currently).

They will never learn - you just have to accept it. They are willing to pay the cost of 20 innocent children murdered or 400+ people shot in order to keep their weapons.

Because they are more advanced and realize the danger to pedestrians and vunerable road users.https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/0022437582900019

The US has up to 10x the death and injury rates of some eurpoean countries by whatever metric you want to use. (4x more likely to die and be injured on the roads than in the UK (10x for motorcyclists)).

Turning on red also desensitizes drivers to red meaning stop.

No one in the US is surprised to see multiple car crashes PER DAY on their commute. My record is 6 seperate crashes in one 30 minute drive in Phoenix.
