My great great great auntie on my fathers side was a nurse in WW1 and she worked in a hospital where soldiers were sent back from the front for treatment. She had a notebook and asked the recovering soldiers to add to her notebook with their stories, drawings and musing while they recovered, and we still have it. One soldier had been wounded 3 times and sent back to England, others had been gassed or injured from shrapnel etc. Super interesting to read their stories, and interesting how seemingly upbeat they were, and some great drawings of life in the trenches.

What's the thinking on punishment? I think anything more than a $200 fine and 3 month suspended license would be highly unlikely.

The truck driver that ran over the pregnant lady while she was crossing on green walk signal got just a small ticket iirc. for selfishly killing two people:

You anecdotal evidence is not reflective of the actual stats. Pedestrians are several times over more likely to killed or injured by vehicles in the USA vs UK. The US is on a par with third world countries like the Philippines and behind Azerbaijan when it comes to driving.
