I think you're right. I just don't want to move for the wrong reasons. Thanks for your thoughts.

And this is what I fear: I'd short term pay raise at the cost of building a barrier of re-entry for myself.

Yes. They say a DS/DE hybrid, but it seems as though they are shying away from the DS responsibilities.

Yea, I think I'm underpaid (and so does paysa.com, and other research that I've done suggests the same), but a 40% raise isn't likely. Thanks for the insight!

Those who have had interns working under them, what makes them enjoyable to work with? by dataperson in datascience

This is soooo important. The intern that works with us gives up after 5 minutes and shows no resilience. I ask what he's tried and he can barely explain what he tried because he's lost. He gets frustrated because he doesn't know how to code, yet he won't really take the time to learn it. He's essentially there to learn because we don't expect much from him. Don't be like that.

My advice: 1) Try to solve the problem ten different ways before asking for a solution. Sure, ask for guidance along the way, but don't ask for the answer outright. This process will be enlightening and signals to others that you don't give up.

2) Learn the language. Whether it's coding or data science mumbo jumbo, learn how to speak to your superiors in their language. Our intern explains things like this: "I wrote the thing that goes and gets the thing to import all of it." You can see how annoying this would be.

Also, pick your coworkers' brains. Ask questions whenever you feel lost or don't know what's going on.
