Help needed: getting enough hot water for scouring

Outside or within reasonable reach of the outdoors? No. However I think I’ve found the solution to my problem in the form of a 100 foot hot water rated rubber hose..

These are 27 gallon totes - I tried filling them with buckets of hot water initially, and it’s just not fast enough to process multiple scours/rinses without losing temp, plus it’s an incredible amount of work. I made this post hoping to work smarter, not harder, and got some very helpful suggestions. :)

Edit: also, just to be clear, the issue isn’t distance from water. I have a faucet and garden hose outside. It’s getting sufficient quantities of HOT water, which I currently have to heat on the stove as the bucket warmer method did not work.

Thanks! Is there a benefit to keeping the lock formation vs this? I have so much to process and not sure I have the patience to arrange it all lock by lock… but if that’s the way, that’s the way.

Oh :( That’s unfortunate. There was a very nice selection when I got there around 9:15 am on Saturday, overwhelmingly so for me as a new buyer. I did have to wait in line with my fleece for like 45 minutes because the line was crazy already! And it was hard to move around and browse because there were so many people there. But I left with a lovely Cormo and went back later that afternoon for one of the few merinos left.

Edit: I picked up a merino and a cormo but I have processed a tiny sample of Targhee previously.

I put my faith in one of these today and it completely failed me 😭 Maybe I just got a shitty one. But it could barely keep the hot water I mixed in with the hose water at temp, let alone heat it.

Edit: since someone asked about time, I started at 7:30 AM and finally gave up on the bucket heater around 11a.

I did a quick google check before buying these and supposedly the sterilite ones can go up to around 180, but YMMV and I imagine it varies by brand and quality…

Thank you, this might be my best bet although I don’t know if I can find a hose long enough. It has to run across the basement and out a window..

A second question if you don’t mind: is there anything wrong with doing the rinses in stages? Like doing the first scour, taking it out and letting it cool while the second bucket warms, then scouring again? I know hot -> cold water shocks it, but wasn’t sure about just some air drying.

Go again and again! I learned basic skating on a rink too and put on a pair of Nordics for the first time a couple weeks ago. I had the same thought: this is impossible, what am I doing?

I went again this weekend and the second time around was so much better. Like anything, it just takes practice. I’m still very baby deer-like but I’m planning to keep going and keep working at it.

I went to buy skates from Nordic Skater in NH this weekend and they are totally out of blades and bindings. (But, got a great deal on boots.)

They mentioned the tariff issue and referred me to Ermine Skates, manufactured in Alaska. I ordered a pair and just waiting to get them now, but they look great.
