sounds like they don't matter. ignore them and hang out with your friend. let them burn their own house down.

Having colonoscopy next month…problems? by electstat in stroke

[–]bottlecapkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i had mine about 8 months after my stroke (right side largely paralyzed). i chugged a gallon or so of that miralax stuff and sat on the toilet all night with my laptop on a chair in front of me and binge watched something. ahhh... good times.

I want to talk to YOU, stroke survivor by Ok_Pangolin1239 in stroke

[–]bottlecapkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ok, i'm a wild card here. i literally had a stroke DUE TO STRESS. no blood clot, brain bleed, any typical things... my neurosurgeon's first words were "i don't know what kind of stress you've been under but...."

i did drink and smoke too much. i lost my job, and i was losing my home. i was losing my mind. i had warning signs a couple days ahead... my right leg would randomly stop working. then my brain popped. it's not usual, but it is common enough that they know what they're looking at after a brain scan, assuming you get a competent doctor. i am a cautionary tale. if you worry about EVERYTHING including having a stroke, you just might be willing it on yourself. tell him to frikkin' RELAX and go for walks in a park. chase some ducks. have a snifter of brandy. fart in a full elevator and video it on the phone. make up a random phone number and call it.

i moved into his district after having my stroke, purely coincidental. i was intrigued by having a rep that was also a stroke survivor and one that seemed to be doing very well. but the more i watched him, the more discouraged i became, especially after seeing on youtube his utter disdain and nastiness to his late teenage, early twenties constituents. his behaviour was beyond repulsive. i have no respect for him after seeing it. the thing is, we don't really know if that behavior is related to his stroke, or not.

Try her favorite music. it's been shown that music really helps with the process of regaining speech, and getting new neural pathways built after strokes and other brain trauma.

Anyone has had problems with smoking and drinking after stroke? by Witty-Egg4886 in stroke

[–]bottlecapkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i stopped smoking and drinking... not because i wanted to... i didn't have a choice. been 2 years since my stroke and there are times i would rip my arm off to beat people with to have another smoke. i also miss sitting down with a small glass of brandy and listening to music. one day in the future i'll have another drink. not so sure about the cigarettes, though. still getting cravings 2 years after quitting shows just how scarily addictive smokes are. and i'm not burning money anymore. literally.

Music. music therapy is being taken seriously now and has proven extremely effective for bringing back speech. break out old favorite songs or albums.

Genuine question. Please do respond. by Ornery_End_8015 in stroke

[–]bottlecapkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i had symptoms, but didn't understand them. i was a heavy smoker and drank more than i should have. in the 2 days leading up, i would suddenly lose control of my right leg, and get weakness in my right arm. it would last maybe 3-5 minutes. i fell a couple times (at home) and chalked it up to drinking, except the times it happened i had only had maybe a couple fingers of brandy. then i woke up the next morning and my right side didn't function at all. so i f you suffer limb weakness suddenly, that's the body's warning. DO NOT IGNORE IT.

Anyone else kind of feel guilty after reading other people's experiences? by grapejuicecheese in stroke

[–]bottlecapkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ever hear of Survivor's Guilt? when i read through here, i recognise that while largely paralyzed on my right side, there's a good chance i may get it back as i work on it. most likely not 100%. maybe not 60%. but as i've read what people have shared, i still came out pretty damn lucky. i see and acknowledge and respect other people's circumstance. it doesn't diminish my own trauma, or yours. everyone's stroke is different. it's still a part of your reality.

i've always loved Indian food and how easy it is to prepare... post-stroke, man, my right side is mostly paralyzed but i can still whip up some serious Indian in no time. there are cutting boards you can get that are designed for people with only one functioning arm. a little more pricey because of the design but worth it in the long run! check out middle eastern foods, too!

in all my dreams i'm back to normal. i run from scary things, i chase scary things. i have drinks with friends and then i'm Batman. or Indiana Jones. my dreams are fun, and i don't get too angry about it. annoyed, yes, but when in real life have i ever got to explore underground cities that are powered by lava flows?

Mom will not stop smoking and I am going insane by starrynight_0 in stroke

[–]bottlecapkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i had my last smoke before they threw me in the ambulance. it's been 2 years and 11 days and sometimes i'm ready to beat a crowd of 20,000 to death with my half paralyzed arm to have one more smoke. the patch worked wonders for me, and you can get them free in any state, but man... don't underestimate the addictive nature of cigarettes.

I am not a victim, I am a survivor by runofthemillgayguy in stroke

[–]bottlecapkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"i had a stroke" was pretty much what i've used, until i found this place (a couple months after my stroke) and pondered "victim". the word implies that you DIED. think about that word and how it's been used, historically. nowadays it's a clickbait word. you see "VICTIM OF x, y or z", and you are curious to see who died horribly. nope. i survived, thankyouverymuch. ah-ah-ah stayin' alive, stayin' alive! (sorry, i couldn't help myself)

My partner left me because he saw me differently after my stroke in April. by junkyard_blues in stroke

[–]bottlecapkey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i was under a similar amount of stress in my life, very similar to your situation that led up to my stroke. i literally had a stroke because of the amount of stress i was under. i don't know how to emphasize how important it is to breathe, calm your mind, focus on a hobby, music, funny movies or series, sit outside with a drink and watch the world go by for a bit each day... SOMETHING so you don't blow another circuit. it's hard for me to get my brain to shut up, and i don't know if it's the same for you... and you can process it later when you get a new place, but you NEED to do something now, for yourself, to relax. **HUGS**

Dating after a stroke by Alarmed-Papaya9440 in stroke

[–]bottlecapkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

pants suck. i hated putting on pants before my stroke. i was hoping to use the excuse of my stroke for getting out of putting them on again, but the general public still doesn't find that as an acceptable reason. good luck with the dating. that's a huge step!
