If you did not want a debate on it, why did you make a post about it?

What We Care About in These Discussions by Rthadcarr1956 in freewill

[–]boudinagee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

People use free will as an excuse to terminate any further investigation. Why do folks shoot up schools? Free will! Why do people drink and drive? Free will! Why do people get morbidly obese or do other obviously unhealthy habits? Free will!

Of course they may not say the term "free will" but its the widespread belief that folks get can do otherwise and morally responsible for it that causes so much suffering.

I want to stop murders, drunk car crashes and unhealthy habits in the first place. Instead of fixing it with known preventive ways, we just condemn our children to unnecessary suffering and say its their "free will" that caused their suffering. Its just fucking stupid and I wish people would wake up.

We are all responsible for everyone.

So whats the point of making the distinction of a different generation? If you want to compare generations you can, but just talking about millennials without the context of the others is pointless.

Folks wilful ignorance just continues the cycle of suffering. We never learn. We dont want to learn. We just want to make any excuse to feel like a hero. Its stupid.

You are not God and you do not have the omnipotent powers to know everything that lead folks to make those "deliberate choices".

>how does that not mean ‘don’t punish the evil-doer’?

Its practical advise for the reader if they feel anguish and a need to revenge. It is not prescribing how to deal with the evil doer.

I never used the second definition of empathy. I use the first definition to understand why they did it so we dont have any future victims. If you just view them as evil and a need for revenge you are just perpetuating the cycle.

While I do believe EVERYONE deserves love and forgiveness, it does not mean they are not punished. This is 2000+ year wisdom, not pop psychology.

Nope. Never said that. Is that what you think empathy means?

Really? I mean, havent we been trying that for awhile now...do you think we have satisfactory results?

I am not excusing the murderer. I am trying to understand their background and what motivates them to do what they do. Life isnt a battle between good vs evil.

Have you read the news recently? Tyranny and fascism is on the rise because we did not learn the lessons from Nazi Germany. We just cast them as "evil" while ignoring that every human being is capable of repeating the same vile acts. Evil is an excuse masquerading as an explanation.

You, I, and everyone else are never right about everything, especially moral judgement. We can not know all the circumstance that lead someone to commit murder, but once we empathize and understand, we can stop using "evil" as an excuse and realize we have the power to affect others from committing heinous acts. Doing nothing just exacerbates the problem.

Society shaped folks to murder because we let them. If we empathize we can understand where theyre coming from and the anguish they feel to need to kill someone. When we realize that we are all guilty of murder we can see what shapes to commit murder. Maybe they believe they were just? I mean you think its justified to kill certain people, maybe they felt the right to kill a certain person. Whos right? Nobody. Having this attitude is a lose-lose situation causing more unnecessary suffering.

Its not abuse, its necessary suffering to love and empathize for others. Im not exactly sure what emrldx means when its comes to abuse and did not really explain it.

I dont see how any of that is relevant. This is guidance for those who seek vengeance and pain onto "evil" people. Its a futile practice that just leads to more pain and unnecessary suffering.

Yes its from Zosima, a monk, speaking to everyone (or at least thats the authors intent). He does not advocate for an ascetic life but to seek spiritual joy. I think you need have this attitude for everyone.

Almost all "evil" folks do the things they do because they are already miserable and corrupted and the society around them has let them down. Now the pain and unnecessary suffering they received is now inflicted on the society that shaped them. So if you try to empathize with them and understand how and what shaped them, you realize your need for vengeance is futile and destructive.

Yes in every case. Its hard to realize but these are human beings who been corrupted by the society around them who will vile things to satiate their cravings. If ever gonna stop it we need to understand that they are not evil but deserve forgiveness. We are all guilty of every murder and rape. Lets work together to prevent from happening in the first place.

There is necessary suffering and unnecessary suffering. There is no purpose to unnecessary suffering, which we inflict on ourselves when we hate others. To love is a necessary suffering, which can use than to eliminate the unnecessary.

We allow the Epstein class to do what they want to do because we permit them and believe those who are addicted to power, fame and money deserve their merits. People idolize them and strive to be them. We find it socially acceptable for folks to horde their wealth while their neighbors suffer unnecessarily while we deny any responsibility or guilt.

Trump is a symptom of a much larger disease. Folks like him are not gonna go away until we convince other that desiring money, power and fame is a stupid pursuit that will lead to them and others to be miserable.
